Trading Standards Product recalls – what’s behind them? The press highlights product recalls when there are safety issues or product defects. Returns are called when problems are found that might endanger the consumer or put the maker/seller at risk of legal action. They can be issued for cars and electrical goods, as well as foods and toys. The UK consumer protection laws and guidance give specific requirements for product recalls. The manufacturer is responsible for repairs, replacements or refunds for the owner. This includes contacting the purchaser and publishing notices to draw attention to the risks and their plans to remedy the issue. The government has also launched https://productrecall.campaign. gov.uk/#check. This links all the government and non-governmental agencies that provide information about product recalls into one place. Use it to check for recalls, find out what actions to take and register your products. Always update your information if you move house.
