CAREER FOCUS
Building your strengths is foundation while
building on them is the edifice of a wellconstructed
career that will stand out. Many
people build their strengths but for some reason
or the other do not build on them. Some
are just bored. You need to then fight boredom
and construct your career around your
areas of dominant strengths. At best build
projects using your strengths.
Don’t tell me that there are too many barriers
and one of them is finance. Overcoming
such barriers is part of the fun. Would you not
rather fail at doing something than succeed
at doing nothing? Everyone that became
famous became so, understandably, because
of the barriers they overcame to
achieve their dreams. The bigger the barrier,
the greater the results, and the fame that
comes with it.
The Wright Brothers used their engineering
strengths to build the first plane. Alexander
Fleming used his strengths in science to discover
antibiotic which helped cure British soldiers
many of whom were dying on small gun
wounds during World War II. There must be
something worthwhile you can do with your
strengths. If you are not that bold join someone
who is doing well in your fields of
strengths and utilise your strengths.
Third, create projects around your strengths.
Many an African do not realise that creativity
is an art and a process. Even a preacher
who is worth listening to must know how to
create sermons that are informative, inspiring
and impacting. Creating projects around
your strengths means conceptualising and
coming up with projects that would inspire
your strengths to fruition and profit.
I realised my passion to unleash human and
corporate potential a couple of years ago. I
therefore develop writing and speaking engagements
that foster that passion. I create
many of my writings out of speaking to people
who face problems in areas where my
strengths are. It is no small sweat.
What are your strengths? Which projects can
you carry out that can utilise your strengths.
Fourth, Execute projects around your
strengths. Once you have conceived projects
even small ones, you must proceed to
execute them. Once Mark Zuckerberg had
implemented his Facebook Project, he had
to rely on other great talents like Sharon, one
of the best marketers in America to see it into
a global billionaire project. Reliance on other
talents is what is required. There are people
who have complementary strengths you
need, figure out and learn from them. Albert
Einstein was once asked how come he was
able to see and go further than others and
he said, ‘because I learnt to sit on the shoulders
of giants.’ You could only see further
than those on whose shoulders you sit.
Fifth, get results from your strengths. You will
only get the results you plan for in life. Many
people celebrate small results and get them.
Others celebrate quantum results and get
them. There are people happy with a salary
and paying bills. Others want profit and interest
as results, so they engage in projects that
give them such. You have to engage in projects
that give you the results you are looking
for. That is building on your strengths – in career
choice construction. It is constructing a
career that gives you the results that you
want.
