In the pink
Rural thieves are brazen, said a recent report
by the insurer NFU Mutual. Between March
and May Cambridgeshire Police had some
108 battery thefts reported to them. Thieves
typically cut the cables from farmers’ irrigation
pumps and machinery, or find scrap batteries
from yards and try to sell them at scrap yards
or recycling centres for their lead content.
Police are asking farmers to paint their
batteries pink and etch each one with their
postcode. Police haven’t left it there; they
have been visiting scrap yards and recycling
centres asking staff not to accept pink or
marked batteries without a driving licence or
such photo identification with an address
linking the holder to the (etched) battery.

A visit to crime and punishment
Do you ever feel like spending time in old
police cells, or an exercise yard? Cognitive
behavioural therapy may help you. Or you
could go to a new museum in Lincolnshire.
The former divisional police station in
Gainsborough has since become the Old Nick
Theatre (makes sense) and now a Crime and
Punishment museum. It’s funded by the
Gainsborough Theatre Company and the
National Emergency Services Museum (yes,
there is such a thing, at another former police
station, in Sheffield). Organisers say that ‘the
interactive element of the displays’ are still
being set up, so entry is half price meanwhile.
They don’t say if interactive includes such
items as wooden batons and stocks. You
never know, they may come back into fashion.

And throwing rotten fruit and veg at criminals
would be impeccably environmentally-frindly.
Droning on
The public need to be aware that if we identify
them as flying drones in restricted areas then
they could be prosecuted, Northumbria Police
said last month. Has any drone user been
caught so far for piloting his machine beyond
his line of sight, or too near helicopters,
aircraft, airports and airfields?! Even if the
public nod at such warnings, drone users will
understand that the police are making an
empty threat. What practically can police or
any guard force do - buy a patrol car with a
sun roof, to better scan the sky while on
patrol?! Carry a Taser or a net with a long
handle?
