EARLY FALL TERRIFIC TODDLERS See Thursday, September 14th FEEDING TIME AT THE TOUCH TANK Come to Joppa Flats after school, and join Lisa Hutchings and her animal husbandry team for a fascinating look at feeding time for the marine life in our 110-gallon touch tank. With the help of Joppa’s digital hand-held microscope, you’ll see sand dollars channeling food into their mouths and green sea urchins wiggling tube feet and spines. You’ll help us identify, sort, and feed a wide variety of crabs and mollusks. Watch our horseshoe crab devour sea worms and hermit crabs “beg” for supper. FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM The Market Street Baptist Church is inviting the public to participate in our Fellowship Program beginning Wednesday, September 13th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. The evening begins with a meal and devotions (5:30-6:30 pm) followed by group activities from 6:30- 7:30 pm. Many birds are most active early in the morning and therefore easier to see. Explore various locations in the Greater Newburyport/ Plum Island area including such birding hot spots as the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island, Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport, Pikes Bridge Road in West Newbury, and Salisbury Beach State Reservation. The focus for these excursions will be the beautiful wood-warblers migrating through our area. Of course, we will also be on the lookout for other neotropical migrants. Advance registration is required; go to massaudubon.org/ipswichriver or call 978-887-9264. PARKER RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR! Join a refuge ranger for a behind the scenes tour of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Tour will be conducted via refuge van, with several brief “drive by” stops along the way. The tour will present an “up close and personal” look at the refuge through the multiple lenses of the cultural history of Plum Island and the Great Marsh, native wildlife and their habitats, and the role of refuge management in the conservation of these precious natural resources. Participants may be driven along areas on the refuge otherwise closed to the public. This guided two hour program is most appropriate for older teens and adults. Binoculars and/ or a camera are recommended, but not required. Meet the ranger in the lobby of the refuge visitor center 15 minutes prior to the program start time. Each session is limited to 14 participants; no more than 4 individuals per signup. Again, this is a vehicle – based tour, with limited stops on the refuge. Advance registration is required for this program, as enrollment is limited. Be advised that individual tours may be subject to cancellation. *Please note: Those who call and leave messages after hours, your registration is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation call from a refuge staff member. A collection of four one-act plays written and directed by women. The challenges, accomplishments, disappointments and successes presented in these short plays engage, entertain, inspire, amuse and take the audience on a journey through life’s moments, big and small, from the feminine perspective. The playwrights are Kathleen Miller, Judith Nies, Adair Rowland, and Edith Wharton. The directors are Kathleen Isbell, Hailey Klein, Anna Smulowitz and Sally Nutt. In the production, which runs Sept. 15 to 24 at the Actors Studio of Newburyport, three contemporary plays are set alongside Edith Wharton’s “Roman Fever,” based on her 1934 short story of the same name, in which we chart the haltering expansion of the historically proscribed arenas in which women have found a foothold and sought to thrive. More information: newburyportacting.org, or 978-465-1229 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th BANDING STATION VISIT FOR BIRDERS A significant part of what we know about bird migration comes from the operations of bird banding stations. Banders collect date, time, age, weight, size, molt, gender, and health status data on birds captured in the wild. These data are forwarded to the Bird Banding Laboratory at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and used by researchers throughout the world. This program is an opportunity for birders to visit the Joppa Flats Bird Banding Station on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, see the banders at work, and learn about banding.
