A Revolutionary
honor for
Arthur Bourque
By Adam Swift
Editor
It’s a revolutionary honor for
Arthur Bourque, who will be
the initial recipient of the town’s
Daniel Townsend Award for
Excellence.
Earlier this year, selectmen established
the new award to honor
residents who have shown the
spirit of volunteerism in town.
It is named after Townsend,
a Lynnfield resident and
Revolutionary War hero who was
killed on April 19, 1775.
“Arthur Bourque is someone
who has earned great recognition
for the volunteer work he has
done,” said Barrett.
His fellow selectmen agreed
that Bourque was the most deserving
choice for the award.
“While we have a lot of great
people in this community, no one
has come close to what Arthur
has done year in and year out,”
said Selectman Richard Dalton.
Bourque’s extensive resume
includes 25 years as a Lynnfield
youth soccer coach, four terms as
a selectmen, and chairman of the
town’s fields committee.
Town clerk proposes
election day change
By Adam Swift
Editor
Town Clerk Trudy Reid is
looking to change the day of the
April town election from Monday
to Tuesday.
Fall Town Meeting voters will
have to approve the proposed
town charter change before it
moves onto the state legislature.
Moving the election day would
eliminate the need to set up for
the election on Palm or Easter
Sundays, and also put Lynnfield
in line with state election protocol.
“Since I have been clerk in
Lynnfield since 2014, we’ve had
two elections that have fallen
the day after Palm Sunday,” said
Reid. “Our DPW and myself
are in the (high) school on Palm
Sunday setting up for the election.
Between now and 2023, this
will happen at least another three
times where it will be either Palm
Sunday or Easter the day before
the election.”
“He continues to do wonderful
work on the fields in the
town,” said Barrett. “He oversaw
the Lynnfield High School
fields project and the projects at
Newhall Park, Glen Meadow,
and Lynnfield Middle School.
For someone who is retired with
a family, every time I call him,
it seems like he is at a field in
Lynnfield doing something for
our community.”
Bourque, a retired state trooper,
is also the president of Townscape
Lynnfield and has been Town
Moderator since 2012.
“Arthur has been a close friend
of mine for years, and no one has
even come close to what he has
done in this town over the past
30 years,” said Selectman Phil
Crawford.
The Townsend Award isn’t the
first hardware Bourque has received
for his service to the town.
He was the Lynnfield Rotary
Club’s Citizen of the Year in 2014
and has also been honored by the
Lynn Chamber of Commerce.
Selectmen will officially
present Bourque with the
Townsend Award at its next
meeting.
The DPW workers earn double
time as opposed to time-and-ahalf
when they work overtime
on Sundays, Reid said. Holding
elections on Tuesdays would also
make it consistent with the day
state and national elections are
held on.
“This would also give us another
day for absentee voting, extending
the deadline to Monday
instead of Friday afternoon,”
Reid said.
Selectmen unanimously approved
placing the article on the
Town Meeting warrant, pending
review by town counsel.
“I think this should have been
done long ago, this has always
been a problem,” said Selectman
Philip Crawford of the proposal to
move the elections to Tuesdays.
When an officer showed
up at the parking lot, Breen
said “the red Solo cups were
kind of a dead giveaway”
that there was drinking going
on. The adults were told
that drinking is not allowed
on school property and the
booze was disposed of.
While there were no
charges or fines issued,
Breen said the drinking by
parents on school property
sends a bad message to students.
we made that quite clear to
Superintendent Jane
