Hippocrates
Recommended
Curative Foods
Hippocrates recommended making healing
drinks from raisins, grapes, saffron, and
pomegranates. He noted that those suffering
from lung infections would find relief if they
had roasted cumin, white sesame seeds,
and almonds, mixed with honey. Pressing
fig juice on a vein could stop bleeding and
oxymel, a honey-vinegar mixture, as well as
hydromel, a concoction of honey and water,
could help patients breathe better, cough
up phlegm and clear the windpipe. A great
believer in barley water, he described it as
‘justly preferred before all’ other medicinal
drinks made from other types of grains, as it
nourishes the body and has a pleasant taste
and consistency.
Why Ancient
Egyptians Used
Coriander
Coriander seeds have been found in ancient tombs
of Egypt, and have been known as one of the
first herbs mentioned in its ancient scripts. The
Egyptian name is for the herb is ‘Kuzbarah’. The
Egyptians knew it for its pain-relieving properties
and used it to relieve headaches, muscle pain and
stiffness of joints.
Coriander essential oil was known to remove
toxins and stimulate circulation. Rubbing it on
the body eased muscular pains, arthritis and
inflammatory conditions. The seeds were used as a
paste for mouth ulceration and a poultice for other
ulcers.
Native American
Tobacco Cure
For thousands of years Native Americans used
herbs to not only heal the body, but also to
purify the spirit and bring balance into their
lives and their surroundings. They learned about
the healing powers of herbs and other plants
by watching sick animals and passed on their
knowledge in an oral tradition, from generation
to generation. Tobacco was very important in
Native American culture for social, religious,
ceremonial purposes as well as in medicinal
remedies. The leaves were used to treat pain,
colic, kidney problems, dropsy, fever, colic,
worms, convulsions, toothache, as an antidote
for poison, skin conditions, boils, tuberculosis,
vertigo, and to treat insect and snakebites.
