SCHOOL OF THE WILD CONTINUED
Ms. Gerling first participated in School of the Wild
in 1993 as a staff member at the University of
Iowa’s MacBride Nature Recreation Center. Two
years ago, she surveyed students on the program.
Eighty-six percent said they “learned a lot,” and 91
percent said “the learning experience was fun.”
“There’s a lot of research that
says kids aren’t outdoors as much
as they used to be, and it’s really
good for your brain.”
Anita Gerling, Principal
Kirkwood Elementary
“Outdoor learning sometimes gets pushed to the
side, because we’re all looking at test scores,” Ms.
Gerling said. “We can’t discount how important
that outdoor education piece is. There’s a lot of
research that says kids aren’t outdoors as much
as they used to be, and it’s really good for your
brain.” > PAGE 15
