Visiting Author
The Visiting Author program brings a children’s book writer into
elementary classrooms to talk about their work, instilling a love of
reading. The program rotates yearly so every child in the district’s
elementary schools has at least one visit from an author.
“Teacher-librarians and classroom teachers prepare for the
author visit in amazing ways,” Devin Redmond, teacher-librarian
at Coralville Central Elementary, said. “Because of this, student
comments afterward show depth, thoughtfulness and authentic
awareness of the craft.”
Ms. Redmond said teachers look forward to the authors’ visits as
much as their students.
“We all see, firsthand, awestruck student
faces as they come face-to-face with a
‘real-life author!’”
“We all see, firsthand, awestruck, student faces as they come
face-to-face with a ‘real-life author!’” she said. “The funny thing
is, though, that once the kids hear the author’s presentation and
see how they had to start, practice, fail, and then keep going, it
makes the idea of writing or illustrating less scary. It makes the
kids more willing to try.” > PAGE 17
Congrats On Your 35th Anniversary
“Hills Bank and Trust Company has had the privilege of being
a part of the Visiting Author Program from the beginning, 35
years ago this year! Every year, we have enjoyed helping bring
a popular children’s author to the area. It’s been amazing to
see the excitement the children share in meeting an author
they’ve read and to see the seeds of imagination take root
from the visit. Our hope is that these visits encourage our
community’s youth to dream big and that people can do
extraordinary things if they set their minds to it.
Hills Bank is appreciative to be able to invest in our
communities, especially our next generation. We also
encourage parents to help invest in education with our
Classroom Cash program. There is no cost to the customer;
it’s just a great way to make a difference in our schools.
Classroom Cash empowers parents and community members
to earn money for the school or school district of their choice
by making a purchase with a Hills Bank debit card or business
debit card. With every purchase, Hills Bank makes a donation
back to the school at various times throughout the year. To
date, the Hills Bank Classroom Cash program has given over
$373,000 to the Iowa City School District.”
