Shenfield Environmental Partnership
Village sign links 2000 years
of history of old Shenfield.
Shenfield Environmental Partnership,
has installed a village sign on
Chelmsford Road to celebrate some of
the history of the village over 2000
years. Chelmsford Road is a section of
the road that Roman soldiers built. It
represents the first proper road built
into Essex and East Anglia.
Funding was received from Brentwood
Community Fund and Essex County
Council Community Initiative Fund to
create the sign which also featured the
logo for the new Elizabeth Line.
Students from Shenfield High School
and St. Mary’s C of E Primary School
worked together to create ideas for
the sign which also shows Shenfield’s
entry in the Domesday Book of 1086
when the village was called Chenefield
which means “good lands”. There were
6 households and 40 pigs. Also
depicted are St. Mary’s Church
established in 13th century, The Olde
Green Dragon Pub, Shenfield Cricket
Club and logos of both schools.
The sign was launched by Charles
Courage whose family has long been
benefactors to Shenfield.
Attending the sign’s launch was Cllr.
John Aldridge, Chair of Essex County
Council, the Mayor of Brentwood, Cllr.
Willy Russell, Cllr. Barry Aspinell and
Charlotte Simpson and Sophia Morgan
from Shenfield High School.
Valerie Webb commented that this
was a community effort which
celebrates the history of the village at
a time of significant change.
Shenfield Environmental Partnership’s
aim is to improve the environment for
local residents by planting spring bulbs
in association with Shenfield Garden
Society, 1st Shenfield Scouts and
students from Shenfield High School.
John Newberry,
as chair of SEP,
started the
local
Community
Speedwatch
Scheme which
operates
regularly in
Shenfield and is
now run in
association
with the Community Safety
Partnership of Brentwood Council.
National Cholesterol Month
Raising awareness of the dangers of high cholesterol
High cholesterol increases your risk of heart
disease and heart attacks. You can improve
cholesterol with medications, but if you'd rather
first make lifestyle changes to improve your
cholesterol, try these healthy changes. If you
already take medications, these changes can
improve their cholesterol-lowering effect.
Eat heart-healthy foods
Even if you have years of unhealthy eating
under your belt, making a few changes in your
diet can reduce cholesterol and improve your
heart health.
Choose healthier fats
Saturated fats, found primarily in red meat and
dairy products, raise your total cholesterol and
low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the
"bad" cholesterol. As a rule, you should get less
than 7 percent of your daily calories from
saturated fat. Choose leaner cuts of meat, lowfat
dairy and monounsaturated fats, found in
olive and canola oils, for healthier options.
Eliminate trans fats
Trans fats affect cholesterol levels by increasing
the "bad" cholesterol and lowering the "good"
cholesterol. This bad combination increases the
risk of heart attacks. Trans fats can be found in
fried foods and many commercial products,
such as cookies, crackers and snack cakes.
Even small amounts of trans fat can add up if
you eat foods that contain small amounts of
trans fat. Read the ingredient list and avoid
foods with partially hydrogenated oils.
Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids don't affect LDL
cholesterol. They have other heart benefits,
such as helping to increase high-density
52
lipoprotein (HDL, or "good") cholesterol,
reducing your triglycerides, a type of fat in your
blood and reducing blood pressure. Some types
of fish such as salmon,
mackerel and herring are
rich in omega-3 fatty
acids. Other good sources
of omega-3 fatty acids
include walnuts, almonds
and ground flaxseeds.
Increase soluble fibre
There are two types of
fibre - soluble and insoluble. Both have hearthealth
benefits, but soluble fibre also helps
lower your LDL levels. You can add soluble fibre
to your diet by eating oats and oat bran, fruits,
beans, lentils and vegetables.
Studies have shown
that whey protein
given as a supplement
lowers both LDL and
total cholesterol.
physical activity can help raise high-density
lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good"
cholesterol. With your doctor's OK, work up to
at least 30 minutes of
exercise a day. Adding
physical activity, even in 10-
minute intervals several
times a day, can help you
begin to lose weight. Just
be sure that you can keep
up the changes you decide
to make. Consider taking a
brisk daily walk during your
lunch hour, riding your bike to work, swimming
or playing a favorite sport. To stay motivated,
find an exercise buddy or join an exercise group.
And remember, any activity is helpful. Even
taking the stairs instead of the elevator or doing
Add whey protein
Whey protein is one of two proteins in dairy
products - the other is casein. Whey protein
may account for many of the health benefits
attributed to dairy. Studies have shown that
whey protein given as a supplement lowers
both LDL and total cholesterol. You can find
whey protein powders in health food stores.
Exercise on most days of the week and
increase your physical activity
Exercise can improve cholesterol. Moderate
a few situps while watching television can make
a difference.
Quit smoking
If you smoke, stop. Quitting might improve
your HDL cholesterol level. And the benefits
don't end there. Within 20 minutes of quitting,
your blood pressure and heart rate decrease.
Within one year, your risk of heart disease is
half that of a smoker. Within 15 years your risk
of heart disease is similar to someone who
never smoked.
Cloudy2Clear Announce
Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions
Which? have now
joined the thousands of
customers who recognise
that Cloudy2Clear
Windows really are a
business that you can
TRUST. The company
which specialises in
repairing windows which
are steamed up, broken
or damaged by replacing
the panes – not the frames
has received the coveted
‘Which Trusted Trader’
status after going through
a rigorous accreditation
process entirely focussed
on customer service.
Group Managing
Director Marcus McGee
believes that Which? have
endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s
long standing company
policy of delivering the
highest standards possible
at all times. ‘Our service
is simple. If your double
glazing has misted up we
can replace the glass at a
fraction of the cost of a
new window, in any type
of frame, and with a new
25 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving
people money, although
that obviously helps. Whilst
a number of tradespeople
perhaps don’t focus on
customer care as much as
they should do, we make
sure we turn up when we
say we will, do the job the
customer requires and leave
their house as clean as a
whistle.
Locally Cloudy2Clear

Hutton Mount, Ingatestone,
Ingrave & Herongate and
manager Chris Miller
agrees that this approach
is a major factor in his
success. ‘The truth is that
it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from
doing a good job but also it
makes good business sense.
I get a huge amount of
business from friends and
family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes
to show how much a little
bit of effort is appreciated
as both my customers
and, obviously a body as
nationally important as
Which? now recognise.’
So, if your windows are
steamed up, broken or
damaged give Chris a call
Clubs & Associations Profile
BRENTWOOD ART SOCIETY
Brentwood Art Society came into
being when a new arrival thought
the town lacked culture and set
about forming an art group. Just
three people responded to Mr
Balch’s newspaper advert. That
was in 1958 and today, despite
that unpromising start, the Society
is a thriving organisation bringing
like minded people together to
share and develop their interest in
the visual arts.
The Society meets twice a week,
from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the art
studios of Brentwood School.
Monday evenings are practical
sessions led by professional tutors
who provide starting points in
different media, often using
approaches that are challenging
but always interesting. On Thursday
evenings members work from a life model,
without a tutor.
There are talks, gallery visits, a printmaking
week with access to a 19th century Albion
press, weekend workshops, art weekends
away, an annual exhibition held in
Brentwood Library, local painting days and
an annual dinner. Last June members of
the Society were guests of another group
of artists based in Montbazon, the French
town that is twinned with Brentwood, and
we are looking forward to a return visit by
our French hosts next June.
The Society is not for complete beginners
but associate membership is available for
those with less experience. Membership is
£25 per year and £5 for each studio
session. Membership is open to those living
within and outside the Brentwood area.
Those interested in joining can email
Julie Gowers, Publicity Officer,
