DAY 1 | Sandhill Cranes Daytime Driving Tour/ Multimedia Crane Program/Sunset Crane Viewing (D) You don’t have to be a “bird brain” to enjoy this trip. Today is the day to get to know the Sandhill Cranes by starting out with a multimedia crane program at the Stuhr Museum. After lunch, a crane naturalist will take you on a driving tour to see the cranes feast in the fields and see their unmistakable “dance”. Cranes mate for life. Check-in to your hotel for a little “R&R” before heading off to an early dinner before a magical evening to view the cranes. You’ll get a “birds eye” (excuse the pun) view of the cranes as they descend from the sky in masses and land in the Platte River to roost for the night. The sheer numbers are astounding and the bugling is almost deafening. It will be a sight to behold! Overnight Grand Island, NE. DAY 2 | Raising Nebraska Exhibit/Stuhr Museum/ Happy Jack Chalk Mine/Ft. Hartsuff (B, D) This morning see the Raising Nebraska Exhibit at the State Fairgrounds that tells the story of our food production from farm to table. With over 25,000 sq ft of exhibits with a hands-on experience, you can have fun with a combine simulator, pivot, milking machine, and much more. This exhibit was developed by the Institute of Agriculture and National Resources at UNL, Nebraska Dept. of Agriculture, and the Nebraska State Fair. It is really something to see. Next, see the newly remodeled Stuhr Museum which has gone through a complete make-over from top to bottom. We’re off to see the Prairie Chickens. the people of the plains area. DAY 3 | Prairie Chicken Booming Viewing from a Nature Blind/American White Pelican Viewing (B) This morning get up early to see a most unusual sight of Mother Nature, the Booming of the Prairie Chickens. From your private blind see native male Prairie Chickens competing for the ladies. The dance includes jumping, prancing, and posing as well as inflating their sacs and snapping their tales. They must impress the females in order to mate. The dominant male will do 90% of the mating and hang out for up to two months! After all this excitement you’ll be ready for breakfast. Enjoy a hearty country-style breakfast before your next and final bird watch- the American White Pelican. These migrating birds stop and rest and feed on their way to the Canada nesting grounds. They are one of Americas largest majestic birds with 9 foot wingspans. See them swoop and fly as they look for schools of fish in shallow water. With more than 6,000 feet of honeycombed caverns, Happy Jack Peak and Chalk Mine features the only publicly accessible chalk room and pillar mine in North America. The Happy Jack Chalk Mine is one of the only two underground diatomite mines known to have existed in the United States. Next visit Ft. Hartsuff, an active fort from 1874 to 1881 offering protection for the settlers during the Plains Indian Wars. PELLA TULIP FESTIVAL 3 DAYS May 2-4, 2018 Since 1935 the Dutch town of Pella, Iowa, has celebrated spring with tulips! DAY 2 | It’s Tulip Time! (B, L) Spend all day at the Pella Tulip Festival starting with the beautiful sunken gardens. Enjoy free time in the square before savoring a Dutch lunch. Then take your reserved seat for the Midwest’s most colorful event-the Pella Tulip Parade. Complete with street scrubbers, the baby carriage parade, floats and local bands, this event is the best in the Midwest. Then take a storybook covered bridges tour in Winterset, IA. See many of the sites used in the movie “Bridges of Madison County”. Visit John Wayne’s birthplace and museum for an inside look at America’s favorite cowboy. Then it’s time to head home after a colorful trip to Pella, IA.
