The 40th Annual General Meeting of the
Building Materials Distributors Association of
Malaysia (BMDAM) convened on 27th July at its
premises with incumbent President, Yang Kian
Lock (of Sudut Swasta Sdn Bhd) in the chair.
In reviewing the association’s activities over the past year, the
President remarked that BMDAM continues to be an entity that
government agencies (MIDA, CIDB, MITI, SIRIM, JKR) recognise and
dialogue with by virtue of the close interaction and rapport between the
two. The association is represented at international conferences such as
MIDA’s Specialised Building Materials Supply Chain Conference 2017 and
in the Malaysian Service Providers Confederation (MSPC).
These and other events offer exposure and raise awareness of
BMDAM members as to the future of the building and construction
industry. Yang Kian Lock shares his insights on shaping BMDAM’s journey
on page 22.
Also highlighted in this issue is the story on the 9th International
Conference on World Class Sustainable Cities 2017 (WCSC 2017) that
was held on August 10th in Kuala Lumpur. Jointly organised by the Real
Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Wilayah Persekutuan KL
(Rehda KL), the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and the Malaysian
Institute of Architects (PAM) and endorsed and supported by Kuala
Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the conference addressed and reflected on the
current and future urban challenges faced in meeting the demands of an
ever-increasing populous nation.
In the Malaysian context and in Kuala Lumpur, an estimated
population of 1.73 million already live, work and play in the nation’s
capital. Greater Kuala Lumpur, which has grown by 6.1% in the last year,
records a population of 7.3 million. (Source: UN World Urbanization Prospects).
WCSC 2017, themed “Transforming Cities: Design, Nature & Human
Lives”, called upon speakers from across the world to offer their ideas
and solutions in order to plan for a better and sustainable quality of city
life.
A Photography Competition was also held in conjunction to capture
the people, the lives, the places and the opportunities that Malaysians
living in cities have or DO NOT HAVE. The story on WCSC 2017 kickstarts
this issue.
