Malaysian talents make nation proud with regional win

The 13 th edition of Asia Young Designer Awards (AYDA)

International Finale organised by Nippon Paint came to a

successful conclusion following the announcement of Dayana

Aripin and Evva Lim Fee Yah, both from Malaysia, as Asia

Young Designers of the Year 2020. The budding designers were

crowned winners in the Architectural Category and Interior

Design Category respectively, beating other finalists from 13

participating locations across Asia.

Along with gaining recognition for their design and Malaysia

on a prestigious international platform, the crowned winners will

also receive a chance to embark on a fully-sponsored, six-week

Design Discovery programme at Harvard University’s Graduate

School of Design (GSD) in Massachusetts, USA, worth US$10,000.

Dayana Aripin from Universiti Sains Malaysia bagged the

winning prize for the Architectural Category with her project

titled ‘Microhousing Within the Heritage Context’. Inspired by

the heritage homes of Georgetown, Penang, the concept uses a

microhousing solution for urban development in pocket spaces

of heritage zones that will revitalise spaces, bringing more locals

to live with the existing neighbourhood. Evva Lim Yee Fah with

her winning project ‘WO.MEN Women Empowering Centre’ for

the Interior Design Category is from Taylor’s University. The

project aims to create a safe living space offering resources and

opportunities to achieve empowerment.

“The past year has shown the importance of innovation,

sustainability and empathy as we continue to brave the

global pandemic. This edition of AYDA therefore holds a great

significance in our journey forward. In the next edition, we are

hoping to see more entries emerge from Malaysia as we look

forward to the impact that these spaces and designs will create

for generations to come,” said Datin Wong Meng Lee, Assistant

General Manager of Marketing, of Nippon Paint Malaysia.

Held virtually, the international design competition revolved

around the theme of ‘Forward: Human-Centred Design’ setting

the stage for aspiring designers to create spaces that are

socially conscious while being innovative and sustainable. Both

the winning designs were successfully able to combine human

elements of heritage and empowerment respectively, and

portray a sustainable design outlook.

This year’s edition also took special care to include several

digital interactions and virtual coaching sessions where

all the participants were able to interact with recognised

industry mentors and coaches, as well as online workshops for

participants to sharpen their creative storytelling skills before

the virtual awards ceremony that was held live and garnered

over 700 views during the event.

AYDA by Nippon Paint has begun the journey toward its 14 th

edition, bringing together young designers, mentors and industry

professionals under one roof. Themed ‘Amplifying Empathy

through Design’, AYDA 2021 is open for entry submissions and

will push the boundaries of ingenuity even further.

Malaysia’s construction industry to grow by 14.6% in

2021, driven by investments in transportation and

energy projects, says GlobalData

Malaysia’s construction industry is set to recover in 2021 and

expand by 14.6% after construction activity was brought to a

standstill due to the impact of COVID-19 containment measures.

However, the recovery is more a reflection of the depths to which

activity fell in 2020 amid the COVID-19 lockdown, rather than a

sign of resurgence, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics

company.

According to GlobalData’s report, ‘Construction in Malaysia

– Key trends and opportunities to 2025 (Q2 2021)’, Malaysia’s

construction activity had slowed considerably in 2019 due to

delays in several mega construction projects and an increase in

unsold housing stock. This weakness was further exacerbated

with the pandemic in 2020 and as a result, construction valueadd

declined by 19.4% in real terms. The recovery in 2021 will be

driven by investments in transportation and energy projects as

well as affordable housing.

The construction industry is expected to post an annual

average growth rate of 6.5% in real terms between 2022 – 2025,

driven by a recovery in economic conditions, coupled with

investments in transport infrastructure, renewable energy,

residential, telecommunications and water infrastructure

projects. In mid-December 2020, the government approved a

2021 budget worth RM322.5 billion where 73.3% is allocated

towards operational expenditure, 21.4% towards development

expenditure and the remaining 5.3% towards dealing with the

COVID-19 pandemic.

Willis Rooney, Economist at GlobalData, commented:

“Recovery over the forecast period will be supported by the

government’s aim to increase the share of renewable energy in

the total energy mix from 2% in 2019 to 20% by 2025; to achieve

this, an investment of RM33 billion will be required over the next

six years. Forecast period growth will also be supported by the

development of telecommunication infrastructure to improve

(Source: mbbusinessjoint.com)

the quality and coverage of 4G broadband services and set the

foundation for 5G in the country. To support this, the government

launched the Jendela Plan with an investment of RM21 billion, to

be implemented between 2020 and 2025.”

Both residential and commercial construction struggled over

the course of 2020, with the recovery in both sectors expected

to be gradual. The residential sector’s output over the short term

is expected to remain weak due to the disruption to residential

construction activity, coupled with weak demand for housing.

Rooney added: “As part of the 2021 budget, the government

announced further measures to support the housing sector,

which includes collaboration with financial institutions to roll

out a rent-to-own program, which will benefit first-time home

buyers until 2022. The government also allocated funds for the

construction of houses for low-income home buyers, which

will be used to build housing units under the People’s Housing

Programme, as well as the Rumah Mesra Rakyat and Perumahan

Penjawat Awam housing programmes.”

Intel unveils its largest

solar farm outside USA

Intel’s Malaysia operations are now harnessing solar energy to

help power its six buildings across its Kulim and Penang campus,

thanks to a new 3.2 megawatt (MW) solar installation completed

in January this year. The installation is achieving 4.1MW in total

installed capacity which is provided by NEFIN, a renewable energy

developer. The project is Intel’s largest solar farm outside of the

United States of America.

The construction work began in 2020 during the global

pandemic, which presented many challenges but nonetheless

the solar system was put into operation in January 2021. The

completion of this project contributes about 15% of Intel’s global,

on-site solar PV electric power capacity. It will also reduce carbon

dioxide emissions by about 3,800 tonnes.

“Our continued investments in alternative energy are

the key pillar of Intel’s continued commitment to operating

our manufacturing facilities with the lowest impact to the

environment. The use of renewable power generated on-site at

Intel Malaysia is a critical part of Intel’s efforts as a responsible

corporate citizen to doing better by our planet, and as part of

our RISE 2030 goals of achieving 100% renewable power,” said

Robin Martin, Corporate Vice President and General Manager

of Assembly Test Manufacturing and Managing Director of Intel

Malaysia.

The new solar farm panels at Intel Malaysia cover an area

roughly equivalent to approximately 900 carpark spaces and

an additional 50,208 sq ft on buildings’ rooftops, generating

approximately 6,000MWh of electricity annually. The campus

buildings’ electricity demand during peak hours is replaced

partially by solar sources. The energy supply from solar sources

also helps diversify and introduce renewable energy mix into the

campus energy supply mix, which was predominantly powered by

natural gas and coal sources.

In line with the World Earth Day theme of “Restore Our

Earth”, Intel reaffirms its commitment to conserving energy and

expanding on its renewable energy projects and energy-efficient

technologies in technology design and operations, in combating

climate change. Intel has already deployed several solar thermal

systems for the supply of domestic hot water to all its campuses in

Malaysia to eliminate its dependence on conventional fuel sources

and will continue the expansion of clean and green energy sources

to reduce emissions.

JJ-LAPP partners with Clenergy to make solar

energy accessible in ASEAN

JJ-LAPP, the cable technology joint venture of diversified industrial

conglomerate, Jebsen and Jessen Group, and LAPP Holding Asia, has

expanded their partnership with Clenergy, a globally renowned solar

mounting gear provider, for the distribution of Clenergy’s products in

countries across South East Asia.

The partnership will enable engineering, construction and

procurement companies in ASEAN including Singapore, Malaysia,

Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines to access

Clenergy’s entire portfolio of products through JJ-LAPP’s extensive

regional network.

Electricity demand in Southeast Asia (SEA) is increasing at a

tremendous rate, projected to grow at a 3.7% annual rate during

2016 – 2040 twice the global average. To meet the growing electricity

consumption and at the same time achieving ASEAN’s target to

secure 23% of their primary energy from modern, sustainable, and

renewable sources by 2025, SEA countries are substantially scaling up

their deployment of renewables in the energy sector.

This has resulted in the SEA region being one of the fastest

growing solar energy markets, with the share of renewables in the

region’s primary energy mix predicted to rise to 37% by 2040. JJ-LAPP

and Clenergy’s partnership comes at a time when the industry’s

confidence in investing in renewables is growing due to the region’s

rising population, economic growth, and nascent renewable energy

capacity development.

JPP-LAPP’s Regional Head of Business Development Mr John Hng,

in a statement said working with Clenergy will augment JJ-LAPP’s

existing offering of products and solutions for the renewable energy

and solar industries, enabling them to offer customers a one-stop

solution for all of their product needs.

Clenergy’s range of solar mounting gear from their SolarRoof,

Ground, Water, and Elevate series, will complement JJ-LAPP’s current

suite of offerings such as the LAPP solar cables and connectors, Trina

solar panels, and Huawei solar inverters to meet the growing demand

for renewable energy in the region.

“The use of renewable energy has not just been proven to be

beneficial to the environment but has also been seen as a driving

factor in aiding the economy’s development. We already see a global

shift in investment towards renewables, particularly with solar

power in Asia, and we hope this promotes industry participation in

green technology,” Mr Hng said.

With the cost of generating renewable energy rapidly declining,

ASEAN countries have an opportunity to shift towards more

sustainable business practices. Malaysia is already the world’s

third-largest producer of photovoltaic (PV) cells, while investment

in Thailand’s solar manufacturing industry contributes to the PV

output for global markets. Singapore is also focusing on solar PV

deployment as a sustainable energy source, and is forecasted to add

1.2GW of new power capacity generated between now and 2030.

Yellow Meranti featured at Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa.

BEAUTIFUL MERANTI

A feature by Malaysian Timber Council

Meranti is a lovely and versatile timber

from the genus Shorea. It has high

commercial value and can be easily

found in Malaysia. Meranti can grow well

over 50 metres in height with diameters

ranging from one to 1.5 metres on

average.

There are over 190 species of Shorea that come in

different colours in the heartwood but share somewhat similar

characteristics in terms of texture, grain, and workability. Meranti

is often found in grey or yellow blending to reddish depending

on where it is harvested. It ages to golden brown with continued

exposure to light while its heartwood can vary from dark red/

purple to a straw yellow or pale white. The wood is straight

grained but often interlocked producing a distinctive ribbon

striped appearance.

Malaysia’s expanse of lush tropical forest provides for

excellent high-grade Meranti timbers, which are sought-after

by discerning buyers from Europe, United States of America,

Australia, and Japan. It is the recommended hardwood for

outdoor and indoor applications due to its durability, strength,

and attractive grains.

Meranti is mainly used for manufacturing windows, doors,

and frames, among others, due to its good

technical properties and wide availability.

It is one of the tropical hardwoods that

are sustainably produced in the country.

A legally harvested timber, Meranti’s

demand has grown over the years and is

set to remain as a key export to Europe.

There are two large groups of

commercial Meranti – Dark Red Meranti,

and Meranti “DUC” or ‘Dark Uniform

Colour’ comprising a mixture of several

Meranti species of similar colour and

grain.

DARK RED MERANTI (DRM)

Dark Red Meranti or

DRM is generally found

in well-drained forests,

on low hills as well as

the top and upper slope

of ridges throughout

Malaysia. The sapwood is

not clearly defined from

the heartwood, which is

medium red to deep red-brown in colour.

The texture is moderately coarse and

even.

DRM is a light hardwood with a density

of 450-700kg/m 3 air dry. It is one of the

easier hardwoods to work with. It easily

machines, cuts, mills, and sands. It has a

course, fibrous texture with open pores.

The straight-grain composition of Meranti

means it is friendly to planers.

Major species of Dark Red Meranti

that are widely available are Meranti

Bukit, Meranti Nemesu and Meranti

Seraya.

MERANTI NEMESU

Meranti Nemesu is a deep

red timber that has a

density of 500-650kg/m 3

when it is kiln-dried at 15%

moisture content. Its colour

ranges from dark brown

to reddish brown and as it

ages, acquires a beautiful

silvery patina (unless a UV

protectorate is applied). It machines easily,

glues and stains well too. The timber

is extensively used for manufacturing

staircase, as well as for boatbuilding,

millwork, including window and door

applications.

Meranti Nemesu is comparable to Sipo

and Sapele in terms of colour, stability and

durability.

MERANTI SERAYA

Meranti Seraya, on the

other hand, is medium red

in colour with a density

of 450-550kg/m 3 when

kiln-dried at 15% moisture

content.

Occasionally referred to

as “Philippines Mahogany”,

Meranti Seraya is dark

red to purple-brown in colour with

white streaks. It also has straight and

interlocked grains. It’s durable, easy

to work with, paints and stains equally

well. The aesthetically pleasing timber is

most commonly used for manufacturing

window frames, in addition to millwork,

window and door applications, and

boatbuilding.

It is comparable to Khaya and Spanish

cedar in colour, stability and durability.

MERANTI “DUC”

Meranti “DUC” refers to a group of

Meranti timbers that are in dark uniform

colours and grains. The Meranti species

Hotel Viceroy Maldives.

under “DUC” are widely distributed

in well-drained lowland forests and

hill dipterocarp forests. The sapwood

is clearer in colour – usually greyish –

and distinct from the heartwood. The

hardwood timbers have colours ranging

from smooth pink to soft red with

densities from 400-500kg/m 3 when kilndried

at 15% moisture content. They are

also easy to work with, either by hand and

can be easily glued, stained/painted, and

nailed.

It is commonly used for marine and

millwork applications and is similar to

Okoume and Red Grandis in colour,

stability and durability.

A 50MW brownfield solar project in Kedah.

(Source: theedgemarkets.com)

Green energy with CSC Steel’s realzinc TM solar photovoltaic (PV) system

In response to achieve national carbon neutrality, countries

worldwide have shifted towards the use of reliable and

environmentally friendly solar energy. The International

Renewable Agency (IRENA) noted that the cumulative solar

photovoltaic (PV) deployment has reached 578 GW at the

end of 2019, while the Global Trends in Renewable Energy

Investment 2019 report stated that the global investment in

solar energy production reached US$1.3 trillion [1][2] . In a pathway

towards carbon emission reduction, the Malaysian government

has set a goal of 20% of the country’s energy to be generated

from renewable sources by 2025, and one of the most focused

renewable energy sources is solar energy [3][4] .

Generally, the common solar PV systems found in the local

market are rooftop type and ground-mounted type. A groundmounted

solar tracking system is preferable in Large Scale Solar

(LSS) photovoltaic plant, which has capacity packages ranging from

1MWac up to a maximum of 100MWac since the solar tracking

system is able to track the perfect sunray orientation to maximize

solar energy production [5] . To ensure the return of investment

(ROI), the LSS system supplier must assure that the solar PV system

can be operated for minimum 21~25 years under the lowest

maintenance cost. Therefore, relatively cost-friendly CSC Steel’s

realzinc TM products, a well balance galvanized steel (GI) with higher

strength and excellent weathering corrosion resistant is more

suitable in LSS photovoltaic plant as compared to other materials

such as aluminium and stainless steel.

As a local steel supplier, the team of CSC Steel can provide

professional technical support on customer inquiries on time

during the pre-sales and after-sales service. In the year 2021, CSC

Steel had cooperated with Baojia New Energy Manufacturing Sdn

Bhd (Baojia), a prestigious solar product manufacturer in developed

GI steel that customized for solar tracking system. Baojia mainly

supply solar products for Nextracker Inc, the first ranked solar

tracker company in the world.

Recently, CSC Steel has successfully developed a new

generation of SGC440(Mod2) and G380(Mod) with high strength

and high formability properties (min elongation of 26% and 19%

respectively). SGC440(Mod2) is produced by adding Nano-alloy

with low carbon steel under a proper heat-treating process to

improve the material ductility. CSC Steel’s realzinc TM had been

accredited with MS 2660:2020 product certification by SIRIM QAS

International Sdn Bhd, which confidently tells our customer that

the product has undergone assessment and subjected to a program

of supervision and control before they are ready to be used.

Since ground-mounted solar tracking systems are subjected to

high load bearing and wind loading, a precise bracket engineering

design using high-strength materials can reduce material

consumption while providing a solid foundation and the necessary

strength to hold the solar PV system safely in place. Some solar

tracking system designers have adopted high-strength GI steel with

a thickness of 1.8~2.5mm in the bracket design.

CSC Steel is able to provide multiple configurations to

accommodate these solar tracking systems according to customer

special requirements, as the company is the only local steel

manufacturer capable of producing GI steel with a thickness of

more than 1.8mm. The ability to protect solar PV system from

environmental deterioration is critical since the equipment will be

expected to be exposed under harsh environmental conditions.

Depending on the installation environment, the appropriate

coating quality is an important factor in achieving the desired

LSS PV system service life, which is usually 21-25 years. CSC

Steel’s realzinc TM can be coated up to Z400 zinc code, the highest

specification in Malaysia that enables solar PV structure to fulfil LSS

service life requirement. The product provides galvanic protection

for solar PV structure by offering self-sacrificing capability where

zinc ions react with corrosive agent and eventually protecting

expose solar PV structure from getting rust.

The newly developed G380(Mod) and SGC440(Mod2) have

been verified by Salt Spray test (SST) and Charpy Impact test that

they could meet the corrosion resistant, design strength and

formability requirements of the bracket and subsequently been

approved by international solar energy system manufacturer and

distributor of solar energy equipment, which will be exported to

major markets in the United States and Canada.

CSC Steel is honoured to be able to participate in the progress

of global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, and hopes to

introduce more special steel for solar PV system for the domestic

LSS system use, and jointly move towards on achieving a carbon

neutral country.

THE ULTIMATE ANTI-CORROSION

PROTECTION FOR YOUR STEEL

STRUCTURES

Corrosion is a costly problem. A study by the

worldwide corrosion authority NACE International

indicated that the global cost of corrosion is

estimated to be US$2.5 trillion, equivalent to 3.4%

of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (2013) 1 ;

Malaysia’s annual cost of corrosion is about RM6.7

billion from RM207.4 billion of GDP 2 .

By definition, corrosion is natural process that converts a

refined metal into a more chemically stable form such as its oxide,

hydroxide or sulphide state, which resulted in deterioration of the

material. It can occur all the time and appears in different forms at

different environments.

When exposed to open air, immersed in water or surrounded

by soil, all unprotected steel is subject to corrosion and

consequently will undermine a building’s structural integrity.

Therefore, corrosion protection is essential as it will optimise the

performance and maximise the lifetime of the steel structure to

which it is applied.

ISO 12944 CORROSION PROTECTION

It is important to note that selecting a coating system that

complies with ISO 12944 can provide you with the confidence

and peace of mind that the corrosion protection you specify

will fulfil your project and purpose. ISO 12944 standard aims to

assist engineers and corrosion experts in adopting best practices

in corrosion protection of structural steel in new constructions.

It is widely adopted and globally accepted industry standard,

recognised by specifiers worldwide.

When selecting the best coating system for your project,

you must first consider the environment and then the desired

durability.

1. Determine Environment

It is crucial to determine the environment surrounding

your project. This can be classified as atmosphere category

(where the corrosion can occur in interior and exterior of the

building), and immersed category (for buildings immersed in

water or buried in soil).

@ Hainan, China

(Source: clouarchitects.com)

The recently completed Sanya Jinmao Farm Lab by

CLOU Architects is a multi-functional exhibition

and retail space located in the Nanfan High Tech

District of Sanya on tropical Hainan Island, China.

The client is Jinmao Sanya Nanfan Rongmao Real

Estate Co., Ltd.

Situated on a 6,900 sqm site, the project

takes shape as a four-storey structure focused on the modern

organic agriculture display and development of lifestyles. The

intricate system of voids fades away the traditional boundaries

between nature and the city, allowing seamless coexistence among

technology and life, maximizing visitors’ communication and

interactions.

CLOU Architects sought to combine the climate features of

the region, integrating its scientific and technological farming

elements. As part of an exhibition centre, the farm lab incorporates

high-tech displays such as agricultural robotics and indoor vertical

farming, introducing a brand new farm-to-table experience. The

project’s intention is to present the high-level technologies to the

public in real-time, emphasizing the evolution of agricultural techs

developed in society and education sectors.

The architects completed the architectural structure and

internal layout into three phases, taking into consideration:

platforms, staircases, and sun protection.

In the beginning, the architects constructed the outdoor public

space outlined with clear scales and rich levels responding to the

four storeys’ functional massing. The cantilever on the second

floor created a semi-outdoor rain shelter for the lower level that

accommodates bar and restaurant areas and a playing outdoor

public platform.

The second point of action was directed to the knitted outdoor

public spaces combined with outdoor circulation. A sculptural

spiral stair dominates the interior while huge stairs of the multifunctional

theatre connect the indoor and outdoor areas, providing

an easier transition through the spaces.

The architects also added a timber grid structure – inspired

by the traditional house of Hainan Li nationality - ensuring

transparency and visual interaction between the levels.

Furthermore, the grid helps natural light and ventilation to flow

through the interior, reducing at the same time sunlight absorption

by 70% and offers an open view towards the surrounding scenery.

(Source: Panjwani Vinay)

This is a site office of a real estate development

where visitors can familiarise themselves with

the salient features of the premium Apartment

scheme. The 1,890 sq ft office is more than just

a workspace – it also carried the responsibility

of demonstrating some of the core concepts of

the upcoming scheme – which were attention

to context, an out-of-the-box articulation, and the harnessing of

natural resources integrating the core philosophy of biophilia.

Designed by The Grid Architects, the site stands at a corner

junction and will eventually enjoy the widest road of the city

surrounded by prime educational institutes and hi-tech office

buildings. Its dynamism and incredible ability to transform any

space throughout the day by the drama it creates in conjunction

with architectural features are unmatched. In this particular case,

the epiphany was the rays of light flowing in through the holes in a

tin roof of a structure at the site.

The dotted effect of the sunlight had a powerful effect on that

space, and we set out to harness a little bit of that power. The

result was a perforated fabric that was permeable to sunlight.

The dots turned our minds to Shibori, the Japanese resist dyeing

technique characterized by circles and circular forms. Spatially,

the circles (cut-outs) are actually a perforated entrance (envelope)

that welcomes sunlight and creates patterns, enacting a powerful

drama through the day. The gradation of punctures is strategic:

the larger cut-outs are at the bottom and the smaller ones are

at the upper part to allow the sunlight to come in a controlled,

comfortable manner. In tandem with sunlight, materials, textures,

and colour play their part, too, in the narrative.

The concrete architectural envelope is painted bright terracotta

red, which under the sun’s effulgence, becomes even more riveting

and eye-catching. The simple, mature and functional interiors are

Concepts & Designs

The architect decided to move away from the usual stereotype of a ‘site office’ to something that was timeless and created a landmark.

(Source: Panjwani Vinay)

articulated in MS, wood and ceramic patterned tiles. These are also

uplifted by the spectacular sciagraphy that unfolds through the day

in the most effective way.

Space is in the form of a simple “L” shape, with a multipurpose

room at the junction of the two arms. One part is dedicated to

the reception/waiting area and a series of cabins, orchestrated

linearly, while the other comprises the meeting room. Pockets of

courtyards play the dual role to unify spaces as well as acting as

an intervening buffer. These also positively impact the indoor air

quality and consequently, the health of users. The plinth of the

L-shaped office is elevated by 1.5 feet to create a floating effect.

The façade that faces the road has full gazing screened by brisesoleils

with circular cut-outs to protect from the harsh southwest

sunlight. This tempered natural light makes the spaces look less

confined and brings about vitality, energy, and productivity.

The inside façade of the “L” shape is fully glazed so that all

the office remains connected in view and spirit to the ongoing

construction and derives some of its energy from the movement

of the workers. A continuous fully glazed window lets light in

and offers an unobstructed view and a protected connection to

the outdoors. The dramatic effect of the cut-outs as shadows

is captured throughout the day, with each moment bringing a

different feel – from the soft morning light to the evening sunset

– transforming the space from one hour to the next. The story

that unfolds is a saga of love between sunlight and the perforated

screen, and the vibration it creates in the space.

Light as empowerment of space. Light as an animating force.

Light as a medium of well-being. Light as a design tool. The

architect explored all aspects of light to create a space that stood

at the intersection of these ideas. The architectural envelope was

not designed for itself, but as a meaningful screen that would

allow us to articulate this core concept. More so, it also became an

element that played a pragmatic role in the interior development

and impacted the interiors such that the inside and the outside

became one.

This project highlights several aspects of the architect’s

philosophy – the respect for natural resources, a harnessing of

earth energies including meaningful and biophilic design that

converses with the environment. This is not a superficial façade

treatment but a Meaningful Screen as an Architecture element

serving as a functional element for the interior too. The purity of

the structure in conversation with sunlight highlights the ethos of

the design philosophy.

The multi-functional and multi-disciplinary character of the structure

has a deep emotional relationship between the building and humans

celebrating light and shadow.

Huangpu District is the birthplace of Shanghai’s

local culture, industry and the Communist Party

of China. Its rich cultures include old houses in

alleyways such as the Yuyuan Garden; modern

industry such as Jiangnan Shipyard; diversified

architecture such as the historic buildings on

the Bund; and the classic Shikumen buildings as

well as historical sites related with the history of the country’s

communist party.

Shanghai’s transformation into a metropolis takes roots

here. Today’s Huangpu District is sometimes referred to as “New

Huangpu”, the result of the merger of three long-standing districts

of Shanghai: Nanshi, Huangpu and Luwan. Each of these districts

has its own distinct history and character.

While Shanghai is popular for many places and reasons, the

French Concession is somewhere on top of that list.

The Former French Concession has long put its stamp on

this part of Shanghai, and it was obviously an honour for French

architect Ateliers Jean Nouvel to design an urban space here

in tune with its urbanism, its plane trees, narrow streets, and

inhabited landscapes. Between Ma Dang and Dan Shui streets,

it was tempting to create a shortcut that would be an urban

and commercial passageway, a sequence evoking vanished

surroundings that have been completely reimagined and are new

and modern; a high, narrow street that’s covered and protected.

The buildings need to know where they reside so as to create

a desire for unique and unpredictable walks. Being open, the

project fits into the quarter’s geometry. The exterior, in a greyish-

beige colour, offers glimpses through the two entrances on Ma

Dang and Dan Shui streets, of a surprising array of lights, colours,

and vegetation. A shopping street on two levels, sequenced by

overhead walkways and small bridges, is submerged between two

flowery walls made up of rows of earthenware jars planted with

different species, both green and coloured.

First commissioned in July 2014 and completed in May 2021,

the project is situated on an 8,400m 2 site. It has a total floor

area of 40,000m 2 , with 25,000m 2 for offices and 15,000m 2 for

basement retail, food and beverage area.

The complementarity between the shops facing each other,

the activities of the offices, and the restaurants up under the

roofs, creates a familiar and naturally animated street, setting

pleasing walks as a target and offering an inviting new itinerary

between Ma Dang and Dan Shui streets.

Shadowplays produced by the adjustable slats of the blinds,

in front of windows bordered by huge flowerpots, play on the

mystery of presences and activities thereby protected, while

inventing a landscape of vegetal friezes in the colours of the

season and of the different flowers. The walls of the passageway

will be painted in variations of brown, amber, orange and multiple

reds.

Ateliers Jean Nouvel noted that: “I’ve imagined all these loving

details to enrich Shanghai, on the Huai Hai side, with this unique

new open-and-covered street: ‘the street of 1000 red jars’.”
