Bounce Magazine speaks to Jake about his journey so far and recent award win...
R: Hey Jake, thanks for speaking to us at
Bounce today.
Aw, thank you also, I’m excited to be talking
with you guys!
R: So, we knew each other as kids. We
went to the same school and you and your
brother came to my dad’s martial art Classes.
Back then, did you ever think you’d end up
becoming a musician?
That’s right, it feels like a life time ago now
right? No, to be honest, at that time, I wasn’t
even writing lyrics. It does take me back to a
very happy time in my life though!
R: You’ve had some very tough challenges
growing up, things which can
sometimes steer people down
the wrong path, how did you
get through it?
That’s true. My father passed
away unexpectedly, when I was
11 years old. That’s impacted on
my life in unimaginable ways.
Despite that, I know there are
many people who have been
through so much worse. There
are also many people who
will still have their father’s alive today,
yet may never get to experience the kind of
love I had in those 11 years that my father was
alive. My mum was incredible too, bringing us
up on her own in the years after and giving us
enough love and support for two parents!
R: You’ve recently won the ‘NMG Audience
Choice Award’, what was that like?
Oh it was incredible. It was like being at the
Brit Awards or something. The event was
amazing and winning was full proof of just
how incredible my supporters are. I was up
against 109 other phenomenal artist’s and
bands from all over East Anglia. I was shocked
to even be nominated, let alone to actually
win it! I’m usually a second place kind of guy!
R: What are you currently working on?
I’ve just released a brand new single which
is titled ‘Numb’. It features vocals from Kelly
Jenns, along with production from ACJ
Beats. My supporters seem to be loving it,
and that’s such a great feeling ! The song is
set for release via all digital channels on 5 th
November.
R: What’s been the highlight of your music
career to date?
I would be tempted to say the
NMG Award win, but do you
know what... I think the real
highlight was probably playing
my mum a song that I wrote
specifically for her as a thank
you for everything she has done
for us when we were growing
up. I feel like at that time, I
wasn’t strong enough to sit her
down and really thank her in a
traditional way. However, the fact that I could
do it via a song, made it easier for me and all
the more meaningful for her. It was a beautiful
moment.
