44 WAIKATO BUSINESS NEWS October/November 2017 Staff big threat to information security – PwC report PwC’s Global State of Information Security Survey has found that staff, service providers, suppliers or business partners, are rated among the biggest cyber risks for Kiwi companies. Nearly 30 percent of respondents said that current staff were responsible for cyber attacks in New Zealand. “The ‘unknown hacker’ was picked as the largest category responsible for cyber attacks and that’s because attribution is difficult and most companies end up not knowing where or who the attackers are. However, it became clear that people known to the company were also among the biggest threats,” says Adrian van Hest, PwC Partner and Cyber Practice Leader. “We’ve seen that the amount being invested in cyber security is increasing, but the number and cost of incidents are also increasing. So while there’s continued spending, it doesn't mean that the investments are effective or that they’re being spent on the right things.” New business models present different cyber risks. The ongoing uptake of cloud computing and reliance on mobile devices brings new risks – not because the technologies are not safe, but because they require companies to take a different approach to the way they manage cyber security. “We’ve also found that investment in identity management is growing faster overseas because they’re experiencing more cyber incidents through increased cloud usage. Kiwi companies are slightly behind the trend as most of our cyber incidents still seem to occur because of outdated software. However, as more businesses move to the cloud, it’s only a matter of time before we face the same risks,” says Adrian. The report concludes that cyber security is no longer just an issue for IT departments - it’s an issue that cuts across our entire digital society. Companies that stay competitive in our digital landscape can’t blindly trust that their businesses and customer data will stay secure. Building and maintaining trust is going to be the greatest differentiator for New Zealand businesses in our digital society and now’s the time to start taking that seriously. Innovator inducted into Transport Hall of Fame New Transport Hall of Fame inductee Dave Carden. Tidd Ross Todd (TRT)’s founder and director, Dave Carden has been honoured by the transport industry and inducted into the New Zealand Road Transport Hall of Fame at a black tie event held in Invercargill. Mr Carden, 87, was supported by his family, TRT directors and long serving staff as he was honoured for the significant contribution he has made as a supplier and supporter of the New Zealand road transport industry. “I feel great honour and pride to be accepted as a member of this impressive gathering of industry talent. I thank the Richardson Group for their dedication to the history of the NZ Road Transport Industry” said Mr Carden. This industry recognition comes at the same time TRT is celebrating 50 years in business (1967 – 2017), and Mr Carden was instrumental in its long term success. Kevin Chubb, TRT’s managing director said “TRT has always understood the significant contribution Dave has made to the heavy transport and crane industries in New Zealand. This has now been recognised by his peers and the industry. We are very proud.” Up to eight individuals are inducted into the NZ Road Transport Hall of Fame each year. They are chosen from owner operators, large operators with 50 or more trucks, individuals that have made significant contribution to the Road Transport Association and suppliers and supporters of the industry - the category under which Mr Carden was inducted. At 28 years of age, Carden founded Southside Engineering in Putaruru in 1958, followed by Jack Tidd Ross Todd in 1967 and went on to become managing director of Tidd Ross Todd Limited from 1987- 1997. Now retired, Mr Carden remains active in the business as a director. He has lead innovative contributions to many large scale engineering projects and transport engineering innovations in New Zealand and more recently Australia. From modifying a Bedford truck to operate as a mobile crane to developing heavy transport trailer technology that carries some of Australasia’s largest equipment and cranes. Other feats include: • Putaruru Rail Bridge -1965 • Development of Tag Axles – 1969 • Kaimai Tunnel Beams – 1970 • Logging Jinkers – 1970 • Tidd Crane Carrier – 1976 • Tidd Hydrasteer - 1982 • Hydraulic House Mover – 1988 • TractionAir CTI - 1998 • Platform Trailers -2013 Considered a great character, engineering genius and inspirational leader, Mr Carden is often quoted as saying “Do it once, do it right.” Early childhood centre wins design award A Hamilton early childhood centre has won a gold medal in a prestigious national design awards at the weekend. Creators Early Learning Centre Chartwell won a gold pin at the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards in Auckland in October in front of a studded crowd of the New Zealand design industries best talent. The Best Design Awards is an annual showcase of excellence in graphic, spatial, product, interactive and motion design, organised by the Designers Institute of New Zealand. The centre won the award in the ‘spatial’ section, under the ‘healthcare’ category, of the Best Design Awards. The modern, nature-inspired centre on Rutherford Street in Chartwell, Hamilton, was designed by award-winning architect Phil Smith, of Collingridge and Smith Architects (UK), who is well-known for his environmentally-focused childcare centre design. The centre has an art and sensory studio, internal garden, veggie patch and water play studio. It is also is fully solar-powered, and has energy-saving features including underfloor heating, natural ventilation, good insulation levels and low-energy lighting. The judges said the entry was “beautifully scaled, the spaces support natural and authentic play showing the power of a simple idea, consistently applied” and “had the judges saying ‘I wish I was a kid!’.” Creators Educational Trust lead design and project manager Kym Gibson said that the Chartwell centre, which opened in January, was designed to encourage children to collaborate, communicate and explore. “It is important to us at Creators that we create a beautiful, loving environment for our children,” said Ms Gibson. “We felt it should be an inspiring space for them to learn, play and grow. We know the early years are a vital time for brain development, and we’ve created something really special for children at Chartwell.” Ms Gisbson said that the building’s architecture, interior decoration and educational approach are all characteristic of the organisation’s Reggio Emilia philosophy. “Everything we teach is grounded in empathy and compassion and harmony with nature, and that is very much reflected in the design aspects,” said Ms Gibson. “It’s reaffirming to win this award, as it confirms that we are on track with all that we do.” Ms Gibson, who has a design background herself, was very involved in the design of Creators Chartwell and worked closely with architect Phil Smith. “I had a vision for the centre and how I wanted Creators Early Learning Centre in Chartwell. it to look and feel, and I think we achieved that,” said Ms Gibson. “I love what Phil has done, designing something that is both beautiful, sustainable and captures our values completely. He really got us, and shared our vision.” Ms Gibson said she was also proud of the team at Creators, and the staff, who ensure children at the centre have a wonderful experience. “We are lucky to have a wonderful, creative, collaborative team at Creators,” she said. Creators Educational Trust is a not-for-profit organisation, has approximately 900 children and 110 staff on its books, at its four early childhood centres and through its nationwide home-based ECE programme, Creators@Home. Creators Chartwell is licensed for 80 children from birth to five years old, and has about 16 teaching staff. There are other Creators ECE centres at Forest Lake, Grandview and Waipa. The Creators philosophy is founded on four pillars: love and connection, nature play, values-based learning and the Reggio Emilia approach. This approach was started in the city of Reggio Emilia in Italy after World War Two, where a group of parents offered to care for children to enable other parents to help with the rebuild.
