they were going to change everything
– that the comics medium
was going to be accepted
in the mainstream... Of course,
that fell flat on its face because
no-one was actually producing
diverse material.”
It took another ten to fifteen
years for producers to catch up,
says Tim, but the transition is
almost complete. We now enjoy
a far broader range of genres in
comics, including non-fiction
memoirs, journalism, science
and economics. “Anything you
can do in prose,” says Tim, “you
can probably do in comics.”
Tim credits the internet with
our new-found interest. “People
are a lot more visually literate
than they were,” he says. “That
combination of what comics
can do - conveying a lot of
information very quickly and on
a subconscious level - works for
the new generation of internet
users.”
With this in mind, Tim says
everybody should have a go
at creating one. “You could
do a strip about a triangle and
a square and a circle. That’s
enough,” he says. “You don’t
have to be a great artist to tell a
story... That’s what that book’s
about; it’s saying: give it a go.”
