TALKING SHOP ........................................... Alchemy Fine Foods Owner Lawrence Livingstone We opened the shop to bring fine food to the good people of North Laine. We recently moved the area and we’ve been bowled over by the amazing food being made by small producers in Sussex. Things that I’d never seen before. The quality of the ingredients was quite phenomenal. We’ve visited farm shops and farmers’ markets to source our suppliers. Around 30% of our food comes from local producers and those that we’ve visited have been so lovely. Our meats come from Beal’s Farm, in Chailey. They are raising Mangalitza pigs - they are woolly pigs from Hungary - and are making air-dried ham as good as any you will find anywhere in Italy or Spain. The Sweetarian peanut butter that we stock is made in East Hoathly, with all peanuts and no palm oil. And the Rowdy and Fancy’s chocolate is made in Chailey. I’ve been in chocolate shops all over the world and it’s as good as any that I’ve tasted. We’re always looking for new lines and suppliers. The quest goes on for more and more interesting things. We’ve got Italian ricotta, mozzarella and mascarpone, as we couldn’t find good ones locally but we’ve got Alsop and Walker cheeses made in Mayfield too. They make delicious cheeses. Their brie with truffles is absolutely divine and they make a good Cheddar and Camembert too. We stock a lot of South African food, because we South Africans are terribly excited about finding our own foods when we’re abroad. Biltong and Simba crisps, for example. They are how crisps used to be, not saturated in oil. We have several varieties of rusks: the ones made with condensed milk are a real favourite. The Brits don’t eat rusks past the age of three but they are amazing to dunk. We have guava roll (rolls of dried guava fruit leather) and guava juice because it’s so nostalgic for me. And we have ‘All Gold’ tomato sauce. It’s quite similar to Heinz but South Africans will go anywhere to get it. LL 29 Trafalgar Street ....75....
