WELCOME
to Pulse
THE MONTHLY MAGAZINE
OF VIVE HEALTH & FITNESS
November is a particularly beautiful month, filled with fall flavors, aromas and
scenery. It’s also the time to recognize our veterans who have done so much to
protect our country, and time to celebrate a beloved holiday: Thanksgiving! This
month’s issue pays homage to these areas, spotlighting some delicious fall flavors,
VIVE’s appreciation for our military and offering insights about showing appreciation for
the “little things” in the exciting return of VIVE’s Eyes (page 6).
The feature article in this month’s issue, “Making Good Decisions,” (page 4) shows the
gratitude that one of our standout members, Maria Augello, feels toward VIVE, crediting
the Club with the amazing transformation she has made over the past year; however, it is
truly members like her that make us feel grateful all year long. We can never thank you
enough for making these past five years so special. Speaking of five years, we are sharing
some amazing photos from our five-year anniversary party; check them out on page 8.
Aforementioned, this month’s issue also pays homage to our veterans. Without them, we
would not experience the safety and security that we do each day. We thank all of our
veterans and want to extend a special “thank you” to our members who have served.
We are also showing our appreciation to all members this month by highlighting more
details about our VIVE Points rewards program (page 3), a new way for us to give back to
you for being so loyal to us.
Of course, this issue also includes a delicious
fall-themed recipe and Shake of the Month, as well
as three more GEX instructor profiles that will better
acquaint you with Leah, Sean and Priya. As always, we
appreciate your dedication to VIVE and thank you for
your constant communication with us. Every time you
make a suggestion, know your voice is being heard.
If there is a particular offering that you would like to
see at VIVE or in a future issue of Pulse, do not
hesitate to share them with us. Please email
info@vivehealthandfitness.com.
Enjoy the month, reflect on what you’re
most grateful for, and stay safe and well!
Practicing mindfulness during the holidays
It’s November, which means Thanksgiving is almost here! It has
been said the average American consumes over 5,000 calories on
Thanksgiving Day, and that’s easy to do with all the rich, delicious
foods that are served. Below are some tips from Laura Maxson (RDN,
LDN) that will help to keep your calorie count down:
• Instead of using whole milk in side dishes,
use evaporated skim milk
• Add low sodium, fat-free chicken broth to your
mashed potatoes to reduce milk and butter usage
• Use whole wheat bread when making stuffing, or
try our Recipe of the Month
• Use low-fat plain Greek yogurt in side dishes
instead of full-fat sour cream
• Steam or roast your sweet potatoes instead of
making a sweet potato casserole
Additionally, remain active after your dinner; take a walk as a family
or play some football outside. Laura will be happy to share even more
tips to get you through the holidays without the added weight, so be
sure to make an appointment at the front desk if you’re interested in
meeting with her!
MAKING GOOD
DECISIONS:
SPOTLIGHTING STANDOUT MEMBER
MARIA AUGELLO
Maxson, owner of Premier, and she received two
complimentary nutrition counseling sessions. “Laura
and I just clicked. Her advice was simple and easy to
follow,” says Maria. She credits her diet changes as
being one of the biggest reasons for her success, and
she has since become a permanent client of Laura’s.
MARIA AUGELLO, VIVE’s spotlight
member this month, makes good decisions. After
a short time as a member in 2013, an injury forced
Maria to stop working out. This layoff led her to a
physically and emotionally unhappy place, prompting
her to take action. Maria looked into rejoining VIVE
and discovered our Revolution program. This medical
referral-based program was deemed appropriate for
her by her doctor, so she promptly enrolled. It was
this decision in November 2016 that helped change
Maria’s life for the better.
During the last 11 months, Maria has undergone a
tremendous physical transformation. Working with
various members of VIVE’s training staff and group
exercise instructors, coupled with guidance from
our in-house nutritional service, Premier Nutrition
Counseling, Maria has lost nearly 80 pounds. The
weight loss began during her eight weeks in the
Revolution program, during which she met with
Lindsay Marshall, former VIVE trainer, two times per
week. This program also introduced Maria to Laura
Upon completion of the Revolution program, Maria
had more decisions to make. Would she continue to
work with a trainer? What program would she follow?
She made the choice to take part in our women’s
strength training program, Muscles & Mascara,
and also decided to continue to train with Lindsay.
Continuing to work with a trainer was an important
part of Maria’s quest to get in the shape she wanted.
“Waking up at 4:30 a.m. is not easy,” she said, “but
being held accountable made me get out of bed.” It
was this training protocol that led to some of Maria’s
most noticeable changes. During a workout with her
current trainer, Corey Owen, Maria’s new look got
some attention from a very knowledgeable pair of
eyes. “Honestly, I told her, ‘I can’t take my eyes off of
you; you’ve changed
so much, and you
look fantastic,’”
said VIVE trainer
Dana Barley, who
has helped guide
many fitness
transformations
and also works
with Maria in our
small group training
program.
LANDMINE OVERHEAD SQUAT/
SHOULDER PRESS COMBO
Are you ready for a real full-body challenge using just one piece of
equipment? Would you like to build leg muscle, core strength and
develop some nice shoulders while you’re at it? Try this exercise our
trainer Dana developed to challenge VIVE’s toughest clients! You can
change the load to shift the emphasis between strength and muscle
building to toning and calorie burning.
Maria continues to train with Corey
two days per week. In addition to these
workouts, she participates in VIVE’s Cycle
classes two to three times per week, and
says that Cycle is the only form of cardio
she will do. “I originally joined VIVE
because it was different than any other
gym in the area. I didn’t want to go to a
factory-like gym setting and just walk
on a treadmill and stare at a TV,” Maria
stated. She loves the energy of the class
and the camaraderie of the group setting,
especially in her Cycle classes. “It is
another one of the things that gets me out
of bed,” she says. Maria said that she has
made connections and friends at the gym
that she never thought would be a part
of her life. The decisions she has made
regarding exercise and nutrition have
completely transformed her lifestyle, and
she wants to continue to build a more
toned appearance by following the advice
of her coaches here at VIVE.
1. Set up a barbell against a sturdy corner at ground level (a corner of
the squat rack works well). You’ll have to experiment with your foot
placement to find the right spot for you, but you should be able to
press the free end of the bar to arm’s length over head without falling
forward or being pushed backward. (Image A)
2. Keeping your elbow locked and core braced, push your hips back and
continue down into a full squat position. (Image B)
3. While maintaining this position and a braced core, lower the barbell to
your shoulder and then press it back up to arm’s length. (Image C & D)
4. Drive through your heels and return to the starting position. (Image A)
Repeat for 4 to 10 reps per side, doing two to four sets of the exercise.
Don’t let this exercise fool you! It demands proper form. Don’t hesitate
to ask a VIVE trainer for assistance in adding this to your routine!
A
C
Maria credits Corey with making the biggest
impact in her changes with his daily
reminder to her. She says that she can
often hear his voice in her head at various
times throughout the day when nutrition
decisions could go wrong, or when she
might not be motivated to wake up on a
cold, dark morning. “Corey never lets me
leave the gym without him saying, in his
goofy voice,
‘MAKE GOOD DECISIONS!’”
VIVE’S EYES
GRATITUDE OF THE SOUL
Oftentimes in everyday life, we tend to forget how grateful we
are for the simple things. How many of us actually take a quiet
moment every day to reflect on what we are most thankful for?
Perhaps it’s the kind act of a friend, a warm embrace from our
significant other or just a wagging tail when we come through
the door at night. We are all so busy in our careers and lives,
caught in the hustle and bustle of life’s whirlwind that we
often don’t stop long enough to listen to our hearts and souls.
Appreciation from the heart takes a certain set of eyes to be
felt and seen; it takes quieting of the mind and feeling from the
soul to experience it in its truest form. At the end of your day,
sit quietly and write down five things that you are grateful for.
Try it for the month of November and see how appreciation and
gratitude can change your life. It’s when we feel and appreciate
the small things that the larger ones don’t seem nearly as
monumental and challenging anymore – or, perhaps, it is then
that we realize the small things really are the big things after all.
Face to Face:
Profiles of VIVE’s GEX Instructors
Following are three profiles that highlight
our talented group exercise instructors, their
unique interests and dedication to the Club.
Consider shaking up your exercise routine by
taking a class with one of these motivating
individuals this month!
SEAN TOMPKINS
How long have you been
an instructor?
I’m proud to say I’ve been
a cycling instructor here at
VIVE since the Club opened
its doors. I started cycling
and teaching around 2004,
and then decided to go
back to school. I received
my fitness and nutrition
certificates in June 2012
from Penn Foster Career
School. In 2016, I completed all 42 continuing
education credits required to become a Three Star
Lifetime Instructor for Mad Dogg Athletics. I am also
a certified trainer for Schwinn bikes.
What do you love most about instructing?
I have a passion for the sport of cycling and want to
help people find the one thing that they can’t buy
or have someone give them — their health. Without
our health, we have nothing!
What is a little-known fact about you?
I love to travel and camp with my wife and kids in
our RV.
CLASS SCHEDULE:
Cycle: Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m.
LEAH YURCHO
How long have you been an
instructor?
I have been an instructor
for 10 years, but spent
many hours in the gym
since I was a teenager.
What do you love most
about instructing?
What I love most is seeing
people push themselves beyond what they think
they can do. I love when someone will approach
me after class and say, “that was the hardest class
I have ever done,” yet, they will continue to come
and push themselves week after week.
What is a little-known fact about you?
Something people might not know about me is that
I love to travel. I also love to spend time with family,
especially with my 10-year-old son.
CLASS SCHEDULE:
Interval Sculpting: Mondays at 6 p.m.
PRIYA IDGUNJI
How long have you been an
instructor?
I have been an instructor
since 2010.
What do you love most about
instructing?
I enjoy accessing the variety
of tools that yoga provides
to make it accessible and
beneficial to practitioners of all different abilities.
What is a little-known fact about you?
Traveling the world is one of my favorite things to
do. I’ve been to India, London, Paris, Australia, Canada,
Puerto Rico, China, and throughout southeast Asia
from Indonesia to Vietnam. I’ve also visited 25 states
in the U.S.
