4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 1 November, 2017
Park saved from
‘death by carpark’
Dear Sir,
Along with hundreds of
other Eastwood residents,
I celebrate the saving of
Eastwood Park from “death
by carpark.”
Although Ryde MP Victor
Dominello has heard the
community on this issue,
he may now feel his commitment
last year to provide
a commuter carpark was
hasty and ill-considered.
Eighteen months and
nearly a million dollars later,
he and Transport NSW have
able
and appropriate site in
Eastwood.
Certainly not for $25 million.
Having now been handed
the problem, it will be a challenge
for Ryde Council to do
what the State Government
could not.
Craig Chung meanwhile
(The Weekly Times October
18) scales the heights of hypocrisy
with his claims Jerome
Laxale has done little
on this issue.
Mr Chung fails to disclose
he was the councillor who
blocked Mr Laxale’s motion
to investigate Eastwood’s
Limits to freedom
of speech?
Dear Sir,
The Editor of this paper
has stated that “We believe
in Freedom of Speech”.
I assume he is referring to

His side comment was in
reference to my letter asking
what responsibility the paper
had in reproducing letters
from contributors that clearly
held a racist position.
The editor appears to be of
the opinion that freedom of
speech means being able to
say whatever you want in a
public forum.
My point was, and is, that
the paper, and therefore the
editor has a legal, as well as
a moral obligation, to understand
the law and to appreciate
the hurt and damage that
is caused by publishing the
dozens of letters that spout
racist opinions.
While Australia allows freedom
of speech it is limited by
various laws and acts.
For instance, it is illegal to
urge violence against groups
or members of groups.
Likewise it is unlawful to

against others because of
their race, colour or national
or ethnic origin.
Our race discrimination act
states that it is unlawful to
‘do an act’ if it is reasonably
ate
or intimidate another person
or group of people if that
act is done because of race,
colour or national or ethnic
origin.
A universal freedom of
speech right does not exist
MARK NEWMAN
Hunter’s Hill
New Zealand no
longer for sale
Dear Sir,
It did not take long for
newly elected New Zealand
Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern to announce plans
to slash immigration and to
severely curb foreign investors
particularly the Asians
(who else?) from buying up
property thus pricing the locals
out of the market.
Smart woman Jacinda who
at the young age of thirty
seven has realized that unlike
Australia, New Zealand
will no longer be up for sale.
What forced her hand was
the fact that there has been
a huge backlash recently in
her country from locals who
are fed up with huge numbers
of migrants coming in
Steve Kourepis
ACTING GENERAL MANAGER
and house prices that have
become extraodinarily expensive
for the average New
Zealander.
Contrast this with our gutless
politicians many of
whom own multiple properties.
They are quite happy it
seems to let the Chinese and
others “park” their money
in Australia buying up enormous
amounts of our precious
assets including real
estate and to hell with the
hundreds of thousands of
young and not so young
Australians that will never
achieve the dream of owning
a house with a backyard for
their kids to run around in.
Shame on you mongrels in
Canberra and your supporters
for selling of our country
whilst at the same time

migrants from areas that if I
were immigration minister I
would not let even one in.
World certainly
is changing
Dear Sir,
Thank you for printing Mr
Mark Newman’s letter, to
which I broadly agreed.
I also thought about writing
a response at the time to
those two letters (Tony Ikonomou
and Lesley F.) regarding
their disparaging comments
about ‘Asian’ people.
The point that I wanted to
make was that it would be
better if letters were not so
relentlessly negative, where
does that get us?
The world is changing, sure,
there will be occasional mis-

back and complain is really
self-defeating.
However, my main concern
was the Editor’s comment
following Mr Newman’s letter
which in my opinion displayed
a distinct lack of common
decency.
This was not ‘freedom of
speech’ it was simply biased
and rude.
JOHN SENIOR
Mark Newman’s

Dear Sir,
Mark Newman should be
the poster boy for Chardonnay
Socialists.
From the topographical and
moral heights of his manor in
Hunters Hill he looks down
with great distain on anyone
who fails to embrace any of
the sacred tenets of Cultural
Marxism, all of which, I have
no doubt, he holds dear.
As is typical of his like, his
discourses consist mostly
how he feels about those who
have the temerity to disagree
with him with a hefty measure
of disparaging labels for such
folk, but hardly a soupcon in
the way of relevant facts or
logical argument.
Like all of his kind because
his feelings are so important
to him he arrogantly assumes
they are of equal interest and
importance to the rest of us.

tradition of Leftism that opinions
contrary to his should no
longer be heard.
My hearty congratulations
to the editor of The Weekly
Times for explaining so succinctly
in the note following Mr
Newman’s letter that however
distasteful it may be to some,
“free speech” includes the right

to political correctness, to have
their say.
Walk, someone above
I would have some
wisdom to share on
why someone would
want to participate in
the life of a parish.
I have been part of
Holy Name of Mary Parish
Hunters Hill for over
16 years and consider it
a source of nourishment,
renewal and joy. The parish
has been witness to
many important events in
my life. Not only did I get
married and had our children
baptised in the parish
but it has also been
a home where I’ve been
able to heal wounds,
seek direction when I’ve
been lost, be myself, offer
a listening ear, share
new ideas, spend time
with people at the same
stage of life, share frustrations
and joys, recover
from falls, listen to the life
of wonderful people who
have gone before me and
nourish my soul through
the Eucharist.
Its been a place where
I feel that no matter what
ones social status is in the
wider secular world when
we are together at mass
we are together as equals
all with a story.
as a surprise that no one
in the parish is perfect but
there is perhaps a silent
source of food for our
hearts deepest longings,
helping us to live our lives
the best we can for where
we are at given all our imperfections.
Not only do we have
time to recognise and call
to mind our own needs
but also those we may not
know how to approach.
Here our hearts are
given the opportunity and
space to be softened in
order to be more receptive
to those needs and
perhaps awaken in us
our ability that we can do
something.
Sometimes we are able
to respond, sometimes it
just goes over our head,
but the opportunity arises
over and over again,
which is especially helpful
for slow learners like
myself.
A motion to live broadcast Hunters Hill Council meetings was defeated

The motion by Liberal
Clr Zac Miles sought to
introduce live broadcasts
by Christmas and would
be paid for from the current
budget for upgrades
to the Hunters Hill Town
Inadequate Planning for
epping Public school DA
Dear Sir
The NSW Government’s

is not limited to the planning
panels (Mosman’s Mayor
warns compulsory planning
are undemocratic).
Last week Epping residents
were told by representatives
from Schools Infrastructure
NSW that the proposed building
for the Epping Public
School cannot have basement
parking as other schools would
then also want to have parking
provided and there is “no
money” for this.
We were also told that primary
school buildings cannot
be more than three storeys,
when we asked them to consider
making the new building
taller to ensure there will be
adequate space in the school
to cater for the large number of
children moving into Epping as
the population increases.
The Schools Infrastructure
viding
a bigger building than
that proposed was a no go as
they can only base the expansion
of the school on the 2014
NSW Government approval for
an additional 3,750 dwellings
for the Epping Town Centre,
even though we explained this
number has already been surpassed.
This means teachers for Epping
Public School will be expected
to catch public transport
to work or valuable open
space in the school will be
taken up for parking.
The school’s capacity will

until someone in the Department
of Planning and Environment
updates Epping’s popula-

them to the Department of
Education.
Surely Epping with its lack of
parking and development applications
approved for 19, 22,
24, 27 and 29 storey apartment
towers can have some unique
planning for the public school
to ensure our children can get
a decent education.
This seems most undemocratic.
MARGARET McCARTNEY
Epping
Many concerned
about immigration
Dear Sir,
The letter from Mark Newman
(racism pure and simple
TWT October 25) reeks of
political correctness and self
righteousness.
policy of openness and
transparency and live
broadcasts helped meet
this community expectation.
In opposition to Clr
Miles motion, Deputy
Mayor Ross Williams
sought a cost estimate
of live broadcasts while
Clr Jim Sanderson noted
that live streaming does
not fulfil council’s obligation
to keep an accurate
record of meetings.
Acting General Manager
Steve Kourepis noted
that live broadcasting via
Facebook had a limitation
of four hours and said
councillors need to decide
how many cameras
will be needed and where
they will be installed.
He will report back to a
future meeting.
The reality is many people are
concerned about our large immigration
programme and what
it is doing to our standard of living
in terms of overcrowding,
congestion, high house prices,

to our suburbs.
Look around Sydney is full.
Our yearly immigration intake,
expressed as permanent
residency is around 200,000
per year.
Of this about half are visa
holders who have been living in
Australia.
Visas holders are now the

immigration intake.
For example 343,000 student
visas were granted this year
alone.
There are 177,390 primary
and secondary 457 visa holders
in Australia - interesting the
largest requests is for Cooks.
There are visas galore and
most allow you to do what we
all do including buying a dwelling.
The government wants the
visa programme to continue
and grow.
Why?
Because they need personal
income tax money - which is
now the biggest contributor in
the revenue stream.
I hope this will be a state and
federal election issue.
Celebrate spirit of
Bennelong on waterfront
6 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 1 November, 2017
The spirit of Aboriginal leader Bennelong and our harbourside heritage
will be celebrated on Sydney Harbour on Saturday November 11.
The celebration will
be held at Vaucluse
Sydney Living Museum’s
“The Whale Festival
is located on Aboriginal
ACTING GENERAL MANAGER
Bus services come and go in major
shake up in Lane Cove electorate
More than 140 new weekly bus services will

but some existing services will be scrapped,
Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts announced this
week.
“This big increase will
be seen on route 292 be-

Sydney CBD via Lane
Cove, with more than 140
additional weekly services
added to the timetable,”
Mr Roberts said.
“The route has also
been altered slightly to operate
via Mowbray Road in
Lane Cove North, providing
customers with an allday
service to Lane Cove
Interchange, the Sydney
CBD and Macquarie Park
seven days a week.”
Mr Roberts said that to
accommodate changes,
route 285 will now operate
in both directions during
the morning and afternoon
peak periods between
Mars Road in Lane Cove
and the Sydney CBD via
Epping Road.
He said services on
route 289 between Mowbray
Road and the Sydney
CBD will no longer operate
but some morning peak
services on route 294 will
be adjusted to start from
the intersection of Epping
and Mowbray Roads instead
of Macquarie Park.
“An additional 50 weekly
services will be added to
route 251 between Lane
Cove West and the City via
Lane Cove, with an extra
six services during each
weekday morning peak
and another four extra
services during each
weekday evening peak.
“Lane Cove North customers
on Mowbray Road
will also see more services
to and from Chatswood
with over 80 additional
weekly services on routes
533 and 534, resulting in
increased frequencies and
later night services.”
Ferry services into Lane
Cove are also receiving a
boost with 58 new weekly
ferry services along the
Parramatta River.
“For train customers
there will be more late
night services on the T1
Northern Line between
North Ryde and the CBD,
with an extra two trains
every hour and we are
doubling the number of
weekend
services operating from
North Ryde to the CBD,”
Mr Roberts said.
“ An extra two trains an
hour will also be added
on weekends for customers
travelling between
Chatswood and the CBD
via the North Shore Line
on Saturdays and Sundays,
during the day.”
Changes to bus, ferry
and rail timetables may result
in some minor changes
to existing timetables
to provide better connections
to other services.
Mr Roberts said customers
should plan their journey
ahead by visiting
www.transportnsw.
info, using the trip planning
apps on their mobile
devices or phoning the
Transport Info Line on 131
“The NSW Government
is committed to delivering
better public transport
services and from November
26 we’ll be seeing one
of the largest uplifts in services
that Sydney has ever
seen.”
Youth charged over weekend
Gladesville Halloween party brawl

Police arrested the 17
year old boy at a home

Monday and charged
him with Recklessly
Causing Grievous Bodily
Harm .
He was refused bail to
appear at a Children’s
Court.
The family of the injured
boy - whose name
has not been released
- issued a statement
yesterday that he had
woken from a coma and
was talking.
“We request the media
respect our privacy so
that we are able to fo-

there for our son,” the
statement said.
Police and paramedics
were called to a
home on Ganora Street
just before 11.30 pm
where they found the
16-year-old boy unconscious
with head injuries.
He is reported to have
been treated at the
scene by paramedics
and rushed to hospital
in a critical condition,
where he underwent
surgery.
Around 60 gate crashers
are reported to have
clashed outside the
party where punches
were thrown and the
boy hit, causing him to
fall to the ground and hit
his head on the pavement.
Inspector Mark Christie
said the gate crash-
fore
police arrived and

did not know if the boy
was one of them.
“We have a situation
ing
for his life in hospital,”
he said.
“We don’t believe he
was a resident of the
home and we’re unsure
if he was an invited

guest of the party
“We understand there
were a number of
youths who were uninvited
at the scene and
that is one of the lines
of inquiry.
“We are appealing for
any witnesses to come
forward who have not
spoken to police.”
Police have not
blamed the party hosts
for the brawl which a
witness said was part of
a feud.
“There were a lot of
hoodlums and shouting
going on, there seemed
to be a feud going on
somewhere,” the witness
said.
“I called out to keep it
down or I’d call the police.”
Ganora street resident
George Terpens said
neighbours are shocked
by the event.
“I’ve been here over
30 years and never had
anything like it,” he said.
“ Of course you read
about it in the newspaper,
but you hope it
doesn’t happen in your
area.”
Detectives from Ryde
Local Area Command
established a crime
scene and searched the
area for evidence.
Inspector Christie said
the incident highlighted
the need for supervision
at parties.
“If you’re going to
have a party, make sure
it is controlled and there
is adequate supervision.”
Detectives are urging
anyone with information
in relation to this incident
to call Crime Stoppers
on 1800 333 000.
10 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 1 November, 2017
Our newspaper inspires a
new generation of writers
The Weekly Times’ Assistant Editor and Sports Editor Chris Karas visited Meadowbank
Public School to talk about writing for a local newspaper.
Inspired by Chris’ talk, Year
Four student Bronte Haynes
penned these lines about
the visit...
“On Thursday, July 27
at Meadowbank Public
School, guest speaker Mr
Chris Karas visited from The
Weekly Times newspaper.
“Our student groups had
been asked to prepare three
questions for him.
“They were all very good
questions and Mr Karas answered
them all really well.
“We asked him how long
does it take to write an article,
how long has he been
writing articles for and how
did he get inspired to write
for the newspaper?”
Bronte Haynes was impressed
by the quantity of
the questions, as well as the
quality.
“When Mr Karas arrived
everybody burst out with
questions because all of the
groups had three questions
to ask and there were about
23 groups altogether.
“What is three times 23?
“It is 69! So there were 69
questions asked. Wow!
“It was very inspiring for
all of the students who were
there and everyone had lots
of fun!
“Near the end of our question
time he asked the students
if anyone would like to
have a photo taken for the
paper.
“Everyone was so eager
but only nine or 10 students
were chosen.”
Chris said that a love for
writing as well as knowledge
of the subject being written
about are essential.
“A good article should
also mention who it is about,
what happened, when it
happened, where it happened,
how it happened
and most importantly, why it
happened,” he said.
“Quotes are always good
because they put the story
in the person’s own words.”
Meadowbank Public
School recently won The
City of Ryde’s Event Of The
Year in partnership with The
followed by several
calculations.
Jarod, Harrison and
Lachlan achieved incredibly
accurate results
to clinch the top position.
In an exceptional performance
by the Holy
the College also claimed

eighth place.
Victor Chan, Daniel
Keeling, Suphanpat
Makhala, Jeremy Parker,
Joshua Poole and
results.
Special mention must
be made of Brother
Mark Ryan who mentored
and guided the
Holy Cross Titration
training sessions.
He was able to pass
on his passion, knowledge
Clermont pays tribute
to the visiting
families and friends
The compassionate and enthusiastic role of families are carers was
celebrated at Clermont Aged Care in North Ryde last Wednesday.
The celebration saw
families and carers share
an afternoon tea with
friends and family members
who are Clermont
residents and with Director
of Nursing Dawn Mc-

“Our carers and family
members are very important
people to us,” Dawn

“It is important for our
residents to know their
family and friends are
supporting them and
that’s why we encourage
them to attend every

Robert Walsh regularly
visits his father Ken and

“What I enjoy most is
seeing how much dad has
improved since he’s been

here care so much about
him and if people could
see how happy he is and
how it has given him a
new enjoyment of life they
would wish they had their

Resident Dawn Goldsmith
recalls visiting her
husband when he was a
“I’d bring my husband
bananas and I’d catch the
bus and I remember that if
it was raining heavily and
I couldn’t make it, I would

Although Clermont offers
a huge range of social,
recreational, educational
and theraputic
activities the regular visits
of family members and
carers bring their own

“People with elderly parents
living at their home,
alone, may not think
about how lonely they
can be,” Dawn McDonald

“The stimulation of visiting
a relative and listening
to what interesting activities
they did here during
the day is wonderful
therapy for the resident
and reassures the family
member that their mum
or dad is being very well
looked after by our caring
was introduced in 2010
as a way of bringing
students together from
“Since then it has
grown to the point that
we have hundreds of
students from all corners
of the electorate
(but with backgrounds
from all corners of the
world) playing, competing
and
making friends
through this competition,”
he said.
“I congratulate the
stroke, one year on
-

You may know her as
a performer and charity
queen.
I know her as my Mum
and best friend.

year that has been, so
many emotions surface
– pride, hope, anger,
frustration, exhaustion
and most importantly
love.
While Mum has made
amazing progress in her
recovery, it has been a
slow process and there
is still such a long road
ahead for her.
For us. What happened
on November 5,
2016 changed both our
lives forever.
I was told that the
stroke that mum suffered
was one of the
worst hemorrhagic
bleeds the intensive
care nurses had ever
seen.
It savaged the left side
of her brain.

if she would survive,

When I asked about
recovery potential
based on the best they
had seen for a bleed
like this, the doctor re-

People who have a

even make it out of the
ambulance, I was told.
So I knew from the
very beginning, that in
true Maria Venuti style,
she was forging her
own path to show everyone
what was possible.
It has been heartbreaking
to see at times
though.
In an instant, Mum
went from being a vibrant
and vivacious entertainer
(we had been

in Melbourne for the
Cup just days before) to
not being able to comprehend,
talk, walk or
even swallow.
But Mum never lost
her spark, no matter
how tough things got,
her spirit has shone
through.

her point across with
words, she talks with
her eyes and expressions,
and this drives
us both forward.
Mum spent six weeks
in intensive care, then
over four months in
rehabilitation before
she was able to come
home.
Of course she could
no longer live alone at
her house.
She now requires ongoing
24/7 care at her
now wheelchair accessible
home with me.
Everything requires
detailed thought, special
equipment, support,
and time. Alongside
the support of
beautiful friends and
a team of carers, we
do our best to try and
make her life as meaningful
and happy as it
can be while she continues
to recover.
It is so good to have
her out of hospital and
in the type of environments
she enjoys.
I am relishing the opportunity
to give Mum
back the love and a little
of the care she has
provided to me all my
life.
Today, it is not about
her performances to
her audiences, it is
about her performance
in rehab.
We celebrate the key
milestones with little
yellow stars.
When she spoke her

stands up, when she
tries to sing!
We have good days,
bad days and days
where we feel like we
are just treading water,
sometimes even
drowning a little.
I constantly ask myself
“how do I make this
work?”, “how can I provide
her with everything
she needs to thrive?”
and “how do I ensure
balance, so that we
can both continue
to lead beautiful lives
too?”
The reality is we are in

huge challenge.
Stroke is brutal, but
Mum is larger than life
and so much bigger
than her stroke.
Sunday October 29 is
World Stroke Day and

your reason for preventing
stroke?”

her family, and now ‘a

what this journey would
entail.
My reason for preventing
stroke is to
stop other people from
having to unnecessarily

One person has a
stroke in Australia every
nine minutes.
It can strike at any
age, changing lives in
an instant.
The real impact of
stroke is far reaching.

the survivor, it changes
families.
So, this World Stroke
Day, I urge you and
your loved ones to learn
more about stroke and
take action to reduce
your own stroke risk.
Stroke is largely preventable,
it can be
treated and it can be
beaten.
Two key risk factors
for stroke that we can
change are high blood
pressure and physical
inactivity.
Respite care to support
families needing a break

For primary caregiv-

recognise that they
too need a break from
time to time to take
care of themselves
and avoid burnout.
That is why respite
(or short term) care is
so important.
It can allow the
carer the chance to
re-energise, spend
time with friends and
other family members
and take some
time for personal errands
that have been
pushed aside for the
demands of caregiving.
At the Opal Fernleigh
home at 8 Sherbrooke
Road West
pite
care to support
families needing a
break.
The professional
and friendly team is
led by Clinical Managers
and with registered
nurses on site
24 hours a day, they
can provide the very
best in care for your
loved one including
specialist care for
those with complex
diseases such as dementia.
-
ties
and outings and
residents enjoy freshly
cooked nutritious
meals by their chef
in the comforts of the
Opal Fernleigh home.
If an aged care assessment
is in place,
you are entitled to up
to 63 days of residential
respite aged care
a year.
They can also offer
private respite if

an aged care assessment.
Talk to the Opal
Aged Care team today
on 9809 3217 to

help you.
Please, go to your local
pharmacy, or have
your blood pressure
checked when you are
next at the GP.
Know your blood
pressure and if it is
high, do something
about it and continually
monitor it.
Learn techniques to
better manage stress.
And if you are not getting
enough exercise,
which most of us are
not, get moving.
port
a stop early, use
the stairs and not the
lift and go for a walk.
By introducing lifestyle
changes like
eating healthily and
moving more, you can
Big opportunities for
investors and vendors
IF YOU know anyone buying an investment property this weekend, they’ll
need to request an 8-week settlement period to avoid Land tax, which is
payable on investment property owned at midnight Sunday December 31.
If they’re past the
$549,000 threshold, it’s a
whopping 1.6 per cent of
the agreed value (and then
2 per cent of investment
values over $3,357,000).
Requesting a January
settlement should be easy
to do if the vendor is selling
their own home.
Otherwise, investor-vendors
may want to settle
prior to New Year’s Day
for the very same reason!
Buying opportunities will
naturally arise in the next
couple of months, especially
those who can settle
in cash.
Negotiating a lower
tlement
(so vendors can
get their cash prior to trot-

powerful. We have clients
that only buy in December.
Negotiating points when
buying property include:
(a) 5 per cent or 10 per
cent deposit
(b) releasing that deposit
to the vendor rather than
it sitting in trust and
(c) speed of settlement,
oh… and the purchase
price.
High-income earners
have their equity all unlocked
and sitting in their
count,
ready to pounce.
AMP currently allow you
to unlock all your equity
under 4 per cent (including
the cash-out bit) under
their unique ‘unlimited
cash-out policy’.
However, I’ve been
tapped on the shoulder
and apparently APRA
have tapped on theirs.
Expect changes next
month.
Deputy Mayor Christopher Gordon and Clr Roy Maggio join Tennyson Road residents
opposed to a proposed 395 apartment development they say will ruin their lives and
put children at risk. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO
Residents tell council to reject Tennyson Road proposal
Resident’s living in and around Tennyson Road have urged Ryde Council to squash
a proposal to build a “four to eleven storey monstrosity” on the local industrial site.
They told last Tuesday
night’s Ryde
Council meeting the
proposed Darcsol
development of 395
units at 2-14 Tennyson
Road is an overdevelopment
that will
impact on their lives
and endanger the
lives of children on local
roads.

Tennyson Road Community
Group said the
developers don’t care
about the community
and their promotional
material is full of “blatant
lies and deceipt”.
“The whole reason
we love the City of
Ryde is being over
ridden by over development,”
he said.
“The blatant lies and
deceipt used in the
development proposal
documents shows
the developer must
not think our community
is very bright.”
One of the contentious
issues is overshadowing,
which
the community says
the developer has not
fully revealed.
Nicole Smith lives
at 16 Tennyson Road
and fears she will lose
sunlight on her home
if the development
proceeds.
“There will be 33
units over looking our
home,” she told the
council meeting.
“This is an unacceptable
intrusion on our
Local resident Francis
Fullbrook said the
development proposal
is full of “unre-
research shows three
to four hundred additional
cars using Tennyson
Road each day
if the proposal goes
ahead.
Fletcher Simpkins
of nearby Brereton
“No allowance has
been made for this

we fear for our children,”
he said.
Local Stuart Mc-
Millan warned that
the proposed development
would see
