won First Prize in the Secondary Schools 

Section of Hunters Hill’s Young in Art awards 

exhibition in Hunters Hill Town Hall last week. 

She was presented with her award prize by 

Hunters Hill Mayor Clr Mark Bennett for her

Park saved from 

‘death by carpark’ 

Dear Sir, 

Along with hundreds of 

other Eastwood residents, 

I celebrate the saving of 

Eastwood Park from “death 

by carpark.” 

Although Ryde MP Victor 

Dominello has heard the 

community on this issue, 

he may now feel his commitment 

last year to provide 

a commuter carpark was 

hasty and ill-considered. 

Eighteen months and 

nearly a million dollars later, 

he and Transport NSW have 

able 

and appropriate site in 

Eastwood. 

Certainly not for $25 million. 

Having now been handed 

the problem, it will be a challenge 

for Ryde Council to do 

what the State Government 

could not. 

Craig Chung meanwhile 

(The Weekly Times October 

18) scales the heights of hypocrisy 

with his claims Jerome 

Laxale has done little 

on this issue. 

Mr Chung fails to disclose 

he was the councillor who 

blocked Mr Laxale’s motion 

to investigate Eastwood’s 

 

last year. 

Mr Chung then abandoned 

the people of Ryde when 

he left his role as councillor 

mid-term to take up a position 

with the City of Sydney. 

He long ago lost his right to 

comment, let alone criticise. 

Mr Chung’s personal attack 

is factually inaccurate 

and adds nothing to the debate. 

He seems in denial that Mr 

Laxale’s position on Eastwood 

Park was supported 

by thousands of voters at 

last month’s election. 

In the view of many Ryde 

residents, Mr Laxale should

of speech? 

Dear Sir, 

The Editor of this paper 

has stated that “We believe 

in Freedom of Speech”. 

I assume he is referring to

reference to my letter asking 

what responsibility the paper 

had in reproducing letters 

from contributors that clearly 

held a racist position. 

The editor appears to be of 

the opinion that freedom of 

speech means being able to 

say whatever you want in a 

public forum. 

My point was, and is, that 

the paper, and therefore the 

editor has a legal, as well as 

a moral obligation, to understand 

the law and to appreciate 

the hurt and damage that 

is caused by publishing the 

dozens of letters that spout 

racist opinions. 

While Australia allows freedom 

of speech it is limited by 

various laws and acts. 

For instance, it is illegal to 

urge violence against groups 

or members of groups. 

Likewise it is unlawful to 

 

against others because of 

their race, colour or national 

or ethnic origin. 

Our race discrimination act 

states that it is unlawful to 

‘do an act’ if it is reasonably 

ate 

or intimidate another person 

or group of people if that 

act is done because of race, 

colour or national or ethnic 

origin. 

A universal freedom of 

speech right does not exist

(who else?) from buying up 

property thus pricing the locals 

out of the market. 

Smart woman Jacinda who 

at the young age of thirty 

seven has realized that unlike 

Australia, New Zealand 

will no longer be up for sale. 

What forced her hand was 

the fact that there has been 

a huge backlash recently in 

her country from locals who 

are fed up with huge numbers 

of migrants coming in

Thank you for printing Mr

which I broadly agreed. 

I also thought about writing 

a response at the time to 

those two letters (Tony Ikonomou 

and Lesley F.) regarding 

their disparaging comments 

about ‘Asian’ people. 

The point that I wanted to 

make was that it would be 

better if letters were not so 

relentlessly negative, where 

does that get us? 

The world is changing, sure, 

there will be occasional mis-

was the Editor’s comment

I have been part of 


Hunters Hill for over 

16 years and consider it 

a source of nourishment, 

renewal and joy. The parish 

has been witness to 

many important events in 

my life. Not only did I get 

married and had our children 

baptised in the parish 

but it has also been 

a home where I’ve been 

able to heal wounds, 

seek direction when I’ve 

been lost, be myself, offer 

a listening ear, share 

new ideas, spend time 

with people at the same 

stage of life, share frustrations 

and joys, recover 

from falls, listen to the life 

of wonderful people who 

have gone before me and 

nourish my soul through 

the Eucharist. 

Its been a place where 

I feel that no matter what 

ones social status is in the 

wider secular world when 

we are together at mass 

we are together as equals 

all with a story.

TO SOME, it may come 

as a surprise that no one 

in the parish is perfect but 

there is perhaps a silent 

yet common understand- 

 

source of food for our 

hearts deepest longings, 

helping us to live our lives 

the best we can for where 

we are at given all our imperfections. 

Not only do we have 

time to recognise and call 

to mind our own needs 

but also those we may not 

know how to approach. 

Here our hearts are 

given the opportunity and 

space to be softened in 

order to be more receptive 

to those needs and 

perhaps awaken in us 

our ability that we can do 

something. 

Sometimes we are able 

to respond, sometimes it 

just goes over our head, 

but the opportunity arises 

over and over again, 

which is especially helpful 

for slow learners like 

myself.

to cater for the large number of 

children moving into Epping as

concerned about our large immigration

it is doing to our standard of living 

in terms of overcrowding, 

congestion, high house prices,

per year.

There are 177,390 primary 

and secondary 457 visa holders 

in Australia - interesting the 

largest requests is for Cooks. 

There are visas galore and 

most allow you to do what we 

all do including buying a dwelling. 

The government wants the 

visa programme to continue 

and grow. 

Why? 

Because they need personal 

income tax money - which is 

now the biggest contributor in 

the revenue stream. 

I hope this will be a state and 

federal election issue.

resolved to support the proposal to declare Boronia 

Park and Buffalo Creek Reserve as Wildlife Protection 

Areas under NSW Companion Animals Act 1998. If 

declared, residents living near these reserves will 

need to keep their pet cats out of these reserves. The 

proposal is now being placed on public exhibition for 

a period of 30 days from Wednesday 1 November 

to Thursday 30 November 2017. Council is inviting

Bus services come and go in major 

shake up in Lane Cove electorate 

More than 140 new weekly bus services will 

 

but some existing services will be scrapped, 

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts announced this 

week. 

“This big increase will 

be seen on route 292 be- 

 

Sydney CBD via Lane 

Cove, with more than 140 

additional weekly services 

added to the timetable,” 

Mr Roberts said. 

“The route has also 

been altered slightly to operate 

via Mowbray Road in 

Lane Cove North, providing 

customers with an allday 

service to Lane Cove 

Interchange, the Sydney 

CBD and Macquarie Park 

seven days a week.” 

Mr Roberts said that to 

accommodate changes, 

route 285 will now operate 

in both directions during 

the morning and afternoon 

peak periods between 

Mars Road in Lane Cove 

and the Sydney CBD via 

Epping Road. 

He said services on 

route 289 between Mowbray 

Road and the Sydney 

CBD will no longer operate 

but some morning peak 

services on route 294 will 

be adjusted to start from 

the intersection of Epping 

and Mowbray Roads instead 

of Macquarie Park. 

“An additional 50 weekly 

services will be added to 

route 251 between Lane 

Cove West and the City via 

Lane Cove, with an extra 

six services during each 

weekday morning peak 

and another four extra 

services during each 

weekday evening peak. 

“Lane Cove North customers 

on Mowbray Road 

will also see more services 

to and from Chatswood 

with over 80 additional 

weekly services on routes 

533 and 534, resulting in 

increased frequencies and 

later night services.” 

Ferry services into Lane 

Cove are also receiving a 

boost with 58 new weekly 

ferry services along the 

Parramatta River. 

“For train customers 

there will be more late 

night services on the T1 

Northern Line between 

North Ryde and the CBD, 

with an extra two trains 

every hour and we are 

doubling the number of 

weekend 

services operating from 

North Ryde to the CBD,” 

Mr Roberts said. 

“ An extra two trains an 

hour will also be added 

on weekends for customers 

travelling between 

Chatswood and the CBD 

via the North Shore Line 

on Saturdays and Sundays, 

during the day.” 

Changes to bus, ferry 

and rail timetables may result 

in some minor changes 

to existing timetables 

to provide better connections 

to other services.

Youth charged over weekend 

Gladesville Halloween party brawl 

 

 

Police arrested the 17 

year old boy at a home 

 

Monday and charged 

him with Recklessly 

Causing Grievous Bodily 

Harm . 

He was refused bail to 

appear at a Children’s 

Court. 

The family of the injured 

boy - whose name 

has not been released 

- issued a statement 

yesterday that he had 

woken from a coma and 

was talking. 

“We request the media 

respect our privacy so 

that we are able to fo-

Police and paramedics 

were called to a 

home on Ganora Street 

just before 11.30 pm 

where they found the 

16-year-old boy unconscious 

with head injuries. 

He is reported to have 

been treated at the 

scene by paramedics

in a critical condition, 

where he underwent 

surgery. 

Around 60 gate crashers 

are reported to have 

clashed outside the 

party where punches 

were thrown and the 

boy hit, causing him to 

fall to the ground and hit 

his head on the pavement. 

Inspector Mark Christie

did not know if the boy 

was one of them. 

“We have a situation

“I’ve been here over 

30 years and never had 

anything like it,” he said. 

“ Of course you read 

about it in the newspaper, 

but you hope it 

doesn’t happen in your 

area.” 

Detectives from Ryde 

Local Area Command 

established a crime 

scene and searched the 

area for evidence. 

Inspector Christie said 

the incident highlighted 

the need for supervision 

at parties. 

“If you’re going to 

have a party, make sure 

it is controlled and there 

is adequate supervision.” 

Detectives are urging 

anyone with information 

in relation to this incident 

to call Crime Stoppers

Our newspaper inspires a 

new generation of writers 

The Weekly Times’ Assistant Editor and Sports Editor Chris Karas visited Meadowbank 

Public School to talk about writing for a local newspaper. 

Inspired by Chris’ talk, Year 

Four student Bronte Haynes 

penned these lines about 

the visit... 

“On Thursday, July 27 

at Meadowbank Public 

School, guest speaker Mr 

Chris Karas visited from The 

Weekly Times newspaper. 

“Our student groups had 

been asked to prepare three 

questions for him. 

“They were all very good 

questions and Mr Karas answered 

them all really well. 

“We asked him how long 

does it take to write an article, 

how long has he been 

writing articles for and how 

did he get inspired to write 

for the newspaper?” 

Bronte Haynes was impressed 

by the quantity of 

the questions, as well as the 

quality. 

“When Mr Karas arrived 

everybody burst out with 

questions because all of the 

groups had three questions 

to ask and there were about 

23 groups altogether. 

“What is three times 23? 

“It is 69! So there were 69 

questions asked. Wow! 

“It was very inspiring for 

all of the students who were 

there and everyone had lots 

of fun! 

“Near the end of our question 

time he asked the students 

if anyone would like to 

have a photo taken for the 

paper. 

“Everyone was so eager 

but only nine or 10 students 

were chosen.” 

Chris said that a love for 

writing as well as knowledge 

of the subject being written 

about are essential. 

“A good article should 

also mention who it is about, 

what happened, when it 

happened, where it happened, 

how it happened 

and most importantly, why it 

happened,” he said. 

“Quotes are always good 

because they put the story 

in the person’s own words.”

Ryde Eastwood Music Concert

A 50 year reunion of students 

who attended Gladesville Public 

School from 1961 to 1967 

was held recently. 

Some 30 former pupils and 

 

school with the assistance of relieving 

principal David Roberts, 

revisiting old records and classrooms 

and other spaces they 

had used 50 years ago. 

After this they continued to relive 

memories and swap stories 

at Gladesville RSL Community 

Club.

You may know her as 

a performer and charity 

queen. 

I know her as my Mum 

and best friend.

– pride, hope, anger, 

frustration, exhaustion 

and most importantly 

love. 

While Mum has made 

amazing progress in her 

recovery, it has been a 

slow process and there 

is still such a long road 

ahead for her. 

For us. What happened 

on November 5, 

2016 changed both our 

lives forever. 

I was told that the 

stroke that mum suffered 

was one of the 

worst hemorrhagic 

bleeds the intensive 

care nurses had ever 

seen. 

It savaged the left side 

of her brain. 

 

if she would survive, 

 

 

 

When I asked about 

recovery potential 

based on the best they 

had seen for a bleed 

like this, the doctor re-

ambulance, I was told. 

So I knew from the 

very beginning, that in 

true Maria Venuti style, 

she was forging her 

own path to show everyone 

what was possible. 

It has been heartbreaking 

to see at times

In an instant, Mum

and vivacious entertainer 

(we had been 

 

in Melbourne for the 

Cup just days before) to 

not being able to comprehend, 

talk, walk or 

even swallow. 

But Mum never lost 

her spark, no matter 

how tough things got, 

her spirit has shone 

through.

her eyes and expressions, 

and this drives 

us both forward. 

Mum spent six weeks 

in intensive care, then 

over four months in 

rehabilitation before 

she was able to come 

home. 

Of course she could 

no longer live alone at 

her house. 

She now requires ongoing 

24/7 care at her 

now wheelchair accessible 

home with me. 

Everything requires 

detailed thought, special 

equipment, support, 

and time. Alongside 

the support of 

beautiful friends and 

a team of carers, we 

do our best to try and 

make her life as meaningful 

and happy as it 

can be while she continues 

to recover. 

It is so good to have 

her out of hospital and 

in the type of environments 

she enjoys. 

I am relishing the opportunity 

to give Mum 

back the love and a little 

of the care she has 

provided to me all my 

life. 

Today, it is not about 

her performances to 

her audiences, it is 

about her performance 

in rehab. 

We celebrate the key 

milestones with little 

yellow stars. 

When she spoke her 

 

stands up, when she 

tries to sing! 

We have good days, 

bad days and days 

where we feel like we 

are just treading water, 

sometimes even 

drowning a little. 

I constantly ask myself 

“how do I make this 

work?”, “how can I provide 

her with everything 

she needs to thrive?” 

and “how do I ensure 

balance, so that we 

can both continue 

to lead beautiful lives 

too?” 

The reality is we are in 

 

 

huge challenge. 

Stroke is brutal, but

and so much bigger 

than her stroke.

Resident’s living in and around Tennyson Road have urged Ryde Council to squash 

a proposal to build a “four to eleven storey monstrosity” on the local industrial site.

Road is an overdevelopment

lies and deceipt”. 

“The whole reason 

we love the City of

not think our community

Alissa Jordaan, who 

recently returned from 

the inaugural World 

Para Athletics Junior 

Championships in 

Nottwil, Switzerland 

where she collected 

gold, silver and bronze

amputee in the Under 

18 age category, the 

talented all rounder 

showed a maturity that 

far belied her years to

She achieved personal

to claim a silver medal
