‘I’m Aussie as 

a meat pie’! 

Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM this week became embroiled 

in controversy over whether he has dual citizenship and therefore 

not eligible to be a federal Member of Parliament. 

His father was born in England and migrated to Australia with his 

family when aged three in 1911. 

Mr Alexander said yesterday: 

“My father was born in the United Kingdom in 1907, before moving 

to Australia as a very young child. 

“He became an Australian Citizen as soon as he could. I understand 

he renounced his British citizenship before I was born, because 

he was a proud Australian. 

“I was born in 1951 as an Australian citizen”. 

Meanwhile Mr Alexander is currently completing his 100Km Walk 

 

in Eastwood Park this Friday at 3pm with a free BBQ to which all 

are invited.

The new K-6 school is due to open in 2020 and 

plans were released this week by Ryde MP Victor 

Dominello who said a Development Application is 

currently being considered by the Department of 

Planning and Environment. 

The community will have an opportunity to view 

the plans on public exhibition later this month. 

The plans for the new school feature a threestorey 

building that will include 43 classrooms to 

accommodate up to 1,000 students as well as a 

hall, a library, out of school hours care facilities 

and multi-purpose sports courts. 

A kiss and ride area and 40 car spaces will also 

be included in the new development to help man-

In memory of those who 

 

EACH YEAR we observe 

Remembrance 

Day at the eleventh 

hour of the eleventh 

day of the eleventh 

month as the anniversary 

of the Armistice 

 

 

 

The end of the war came 

a year later with the Treaty 

of Versailles. The First World 

War, to give it one of its titles 

was “the war to end all 

wars”, which of course it 

didn’t. 

However, the number 

of casualties in combat in 

that war have seldom been 

equalled since. 

We look back with horror 

at the conditions under 

which the combatants 

fought, especially on the 

Western Front in France 

and Belgium. 

 

2, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, 

Iraq and others - have 

seen a great rise in civilian 

casualties due mainly to the 

use of air power and artillery. 

It is good that we remind 

ourselves of the great loss 

 

as it helps to limit casualties 

in future. 

No current serving military 

commander would accept 

the huge number of dead, 

wounded and missing that 

occurred often on one day 

in World War One. 

Importantly, it would not 

be accepted by governments 

or people in the 

western world nowadays.

THE CENTENARY of 

the Armistice in World War 

One is next year, 2018, and 

toward marking that important 

anniversary the Anzac 

Memorial Centenary Project 

is progressing in Sydney. 

This spectacular project is 

the completion of the original 

architect’s design for the 

War Memorial in Hyde Park. 

The most visible part of 

this project takes the form 

of two sloping cascades of 

water from the Memorial to 

Liverpool Street. 

However, the project also 

creates underground space 

under, and between, the 

cascades that provides 

galleries, a library, lecture 

rooms all linking with the 

existing Memorial.

will support a plaque and 

a name of the 1700 places 

in NSW from which soldiers 

enlisted in World War One. 

The plaque will contain

take place during the Remembrance 

Service that 

commences at 11am on 

November 11 at the RSL 

Memorial Hall in Hunters 

Hill. 

The actual samples will be 

dug and placed into special 

bags by pupils from Hunters 

Hill Public School, one 

sample at the Memorial Hall 

and the second sample at a 

site in Woolwich. 

There will be refreshments 

at the Memorial Hall afterwards 

and everyone is invited 

to attend.

Sydney have partnered to 

establish a Community Recycling 

Centre on commercial 

premises. 

No council had available 

operational land suitable to 

establish a facility, so the 

Northern Sydney Regional 

Organisation of Councils 

(NSROC) arranged a lease 

of a suitable commercial 

premises. Working together 

has allowed resource sharing 

between councils, in-

and helps to reduce the illegal 

dumping of problem

Hunter’s Hill Council together

River swimmable again by

that developers and builders 

play in cleaning up the river.

Remembering the War To End All Wars 

IN AN exclusive for The Weekly Times, the Secretary/Vice President of Gladesville RSL Sub Branch 

 

Next year on the 11th 

of November 2018 marks 

100 years since the end of 

World War One. 

At the 11th hour on the 

11th day of the 11th month 

of 1918, the Great War 

ended. 

At 5am that morning Germany, 

bereft of manpower 

and supplies and faced 

with an imminent invasion, 

signed an armistice agreement 

with the Allies in a 

railroad car outside Compiegne, 

France. 

The First World War left 

nine million soldiers dead 

and 21 million wounded. 

 

million civilians died from 

disease, starvation, or exposure. 

World War One was 

known as the “war to end 

all wars” because of the 

great slaughter and destruction 

it caused. 

Unfortunately, the peace 

 

 

Versailles of 1919) forced 

punitive terms on Germany 

that destabilized Europe 

and laid the groundwork 

for World War Two. 

At the Somme on March 

21, 1918 the Germans 

launched a massive offensive 

and they drove the 

British back about 60 kilometers, 

an immense distance 

considering the con- 

 

for more than three years. 

For the British, this was 

the biggest crisis of the 

war. 

There was widespread 

concern that after years of 

ships 

and frightful casualties, 

Britain and its allies 

might well lose the war. 

Units from the Australian 

Imperial Force were rushed 

to the rescue. 

One of them, the 15th 

Australian Brigade, was 

led by an extraordinary 

character. 

Brigadier-General Harold 

Edward “Pompey” Elliott, a 

brilliant tactician who was 

remarkably brave, and renowned 

for never sending 

anyone anywhere he was 

not willing to venture himself. 

Elliott had seen plenty of 

the war. He was wounded 

at the Gallipoli landing. 

At Lone Pine, with his inspiring 

frontline presence, 

four of his men won the 

Victoria Cross. 

His brigade however was 

destroyed in the disaster 

of Fromelles. Despite all 

that Elliott had endured 

since April 1915, he had 

no doubt that the German 

assault in March 1918 ushered 

in the climax of the 

war. 

Although the Australians 

fought on many fronts, the 

battles of Fromelles and 

Pozieres marked Australia’s 

entry onto the Western 

Front of the Great War. 

 

Anzac Corps took up positions 

in a quiet sector south 

of Armentieres, known as 

the “Nursery” The Australians 

were spared from participating 

in the disastrous 

 

Nevertheless, within three 

weeks of the beginning of 

visions 

of the AIF had committed 

to the battle. 

Only the 3rd Division did 

not take part, having only 

just recently arrived in England 

from Australia.

Next morning the Australians 

who had breached 

the enemy’s lines were 

forced to withdraw to their 

own lines. 

 

5,533 casualties in one 

night, the worst 24 hours in

Australian toll at Fromelles 

was equivalent to the total 

Australian casualties in the 

Boer War, Korean War and 

Vietnam War put together. 

It was a staggering disaster 

that had no redeeming

Ken was in Darwin 

on February 19, 1942 

when waves of Japanese 

planes devastated the city 

in a surprise attack often 

compared to the attack on 

Peal Harbour. 

He was guarding a petrol 

depot when he saw the 

 

in to strafe the shocked 

city and bomb key targets. 

“We saw the Japanese 

come in and I could clearly 

see the Jap pilot in the 

 

gun at us,” he said. 

“I saw one of our planes 

shot down right over the 

top of me, it was badly hit 

 

Ken Walsh recalls the 

Japanese had planned 

the operation well, hitting 

Darwin’s military and 

communications targets 

with precision bombing. 

He also remembers that 

warnings from an Australian 

Coastwatcher on Melville 

Island and a Catholic 

Priest on Bathurst Island 

were ignored and that the 

 

 

 

“We were expecting the 

Kittyhawks, due to arrive 

at that very moment, ” he 

said.

remembers the horror of

“You wouldn’t see them,

Rats of Tobruk and we 

was badly wounded in the 

shoulder and captured by 

the Germans. 

“He was treated by the 

German surgeons and 

managed to escaped.” 

A Bowral resident who 

turns 96 this December 

31, Ken Walsh can’t recall 

where he was the day the 

end of the war was announced. 

“On that particular day, 

no, but I do remember 

Australia was celebrating 

for weeks and those who 

served were remembering 

some great mates who 

didn’t return.”

Ryde Remembers hero Private Frank 

Sullivan on Passchendaele centenary 

A RYDE family has paid tribute to their grandfather, a war hero who was 

wounded at the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium one hundred years ago. 

Francis (Frank) Harold 

Sullivan of 35th Australian 

Battalion, was a decorated 

soldier who also risked his 

life as a stretcher bearer 

amidst the blood and mud 

 

Belgium. 

His grand daughter Wendy 

Guest recalls Frank Sullivan 

teaching her wartime 

songs and the pride her 

family - the Hayman’s - 

felt when the watched him 

march in Sydney on Anzac 

Day.

wounded in the knee from 

schrapnel and if he’d get 

out of step on the march 

he would do a quick step 

to get back in step.

“He was also told he

wounded and infected leg

for a unique, new irrigation 

treatment at Concord 

Hospital.” 

Wendy believes the horror 

of Passchendaele cannot 

be equalled by any 

modern horror in wartime. 

“Even when our soldiers 

were marching through the 

deep mud they knew that if 

 

into the mud their packs 

would weigh them down 

and they’d drown because 

you could stop a march to 

rescue a drowning man,” 

she said. 

“What made it even more

was mentioned in dispatches 

and later decorated 

with the Military Medal

“As best as we could 

work out we walked the 

same earth where our 

grandfather saved that

red poppies now,” she 

said. 

“We traced the steps 

of the battles where her 

served and attended the 

nightly ceremony at the 

Menin Gate where to Ode 

is read in memory of the 

fallen Australians.” 

Pamela recalls how she 

felt at the time. 

“It was amazement because 

there are so many 

graves and I came away 

with the sense that this 

was not so much about 

retracing the steps of one 

man but about one man 

being a part of such a large 

and horrible event.” 

Frank Sullivan’s story 

was told in a Newcastle 

Sun article from 1920 titled 

“A Brave Deed” and 

by the soldiers who served 

with him. 

They recall the British 

being trapped in No Man’s 

Land, eating rations taken 

from the dead men around 

them. 

“Their attempts to return 

to the British lines 

had failed as the Germans 

mounted machine guns in 

the shell hole alongside 

them at night and during 

the day they were unable 

to move because of the 

heavy enemy sniper activity,” 

“They had been on the 

verge of surrendering

gallantry could well end 

here but the Hayman family 

revealed a postscript 

that resounds in the tragedy 

and sadness of war. 

“On his last night in hospital 

before he passed 

away, his thoughts drifted 

back to the Western Front 

and he told one of his 

daughters Kathleen Hayman 

that he could again 

smell the horrible and acrid 

smell of the trenches in his 

nostrils.” 

Lest we forget!

Gladesville’s Presbyterian Church of St Andrew hosted Sunday’s Gladesville RSL sub 

Branch and Ladies Auxiliary Remembrance Day Service. 

Service was led by Jaison Jacob with welcome by Session Clerk Mrs Marjorie Ricketts.

Ryde searches for 

our missing Anzacs 

MISSING war heroes from the City of Ryde’s World War One Honour 

Boards are being searched for. 

 

were recently restored in 

time for this week’s 2017 

Remembrance Day commemoration. 

The restoration of the 

two maple and gold leaf 

memorials was commissioned 

by the Council as 

part of the City of Ryde’s 

Centenary of Anzac’s 

four-year program and the 

work was undertaken by 

three local craftsmen. 

The refurbishment involved 

the boards being 

dismantled, repaired and 

reassembled. 

The traditional gold lettering 

was reapplied and 

then the boards were 

French polished. 

That’s when the search 

began. 

“When the honour 

boards were recovered 

from storage they were in 

a poor state and it was immediately 

noted that one 

panel from the larger Eastwood 

board was missing,” 

Mayor Laxale said. 

“Despite exhaustive research 

by Ryde’s Local 

Studies Librarian, Angela 

Phippen and members

could not be found. 

“Now, we are hoping 

that members of the com- 

 

missing link and we are 

appealing to local families 

who may have old photographs 

of the Eastwood 

honour board showing the 

missing detail to contact

“These honour boards 

are important because 

they are the only commemeration 

of many 

Ryde soldiers who were 

killed and who don’t have 

graves,” she said.

“It is the only historical 

record we have from the 

time and we want young 

people to know more 

about The Great War,

soldiers, 18 never returned

“Four were killed at 

Gallipoli and 14 were 

fatally wounded or killed 

on the Western Front,” 

Mayor Laxale said. 

“The beautifully restored

now hang in the public 

area of the City of Ryde 

Council Chambers.”

Hunters Hill school names creative 

space after a musical parish priest 

HUNTERS Hill’s Villa Maria Catholic School opened a 

new creative arts room last week which was named in 

honour of local parish priest Father Kevin Bates SM. 

The new arts room 

and the associated 

performing arts space 

were officially opened 

by the Executive Director 

of Catholic Schools 

in Sydney, Dr Dan White 

on Tuesday alongside 

School Principal Kevin 

Turner. 

Mr Turner said the 

new venue pays tribute 

to Father Kevin who is 

a wellknown musician 

who has released several 

albums of devotional 

music. 

“Today I have a special 

announcement,” Mr 

Turner said. 

“It is with great pleasure 

this new building 

will be named as the 

Father Kevin Bates Creative 

Arts Room. 

“This building was 

worth the wait and will 

serve the community 

now and into the future.” 

Dr White said he has 

spent many hours enjoying 

Fr Kevin’s music. 

“Father Kevin and I 

have journeyed many 

miles together and I 

listen to your music as 

my prayer, in fact I’ve 

been listening to your 

music for thirty years of 

my life. 

“Father Kevin has inspired 

us all for generations 

now.” 

He said he hoped the 

creative arts would inspire 

students. 

“The creative arts let 

us touch the mystery of 

God in our lives.” 

Father Kevin said he 

was “surprised and 

humbled” to have the 

creative arts room 

named after him.

Ryde Eisteddfod 29th Annual General Meeting 

Premier Gladys Berejiklian a new Patron 

Chairman Edna Wilde OAM reported on a 

most successful 2017 for Ryde Eisteddfod at 

last week’s Annual General Meeting held in the 

Forster Room at Brush Farm House. 

She said the numbers continued to grow as

Gladys Berejiklian as a new Patron in 2017”

in the City of Ryde growing up in the area 

and attending primary and secondary school in

we will showcase the Eisteddfod talent at an

A tribute to the late Jean Cordiner and her service to the community 

The life of the late Jean Cordiner was celebrated at her funeral at the 

Hunters Hill Congretation Church last Wednesday. 

Ninety year old Jean 

Cordiner was one of

and was a Senior 

Prefect at Riverside 

Girls High School. 

She was also the 

editor of a small local 

newspaper in Gladesville 

when 17 years old. 

Her autobiography 

titled “Jean Cordiner - 

My Story” looks back 

at those early years, 

when she met and fell in 

love with her husband 

Bobby. 

“Two girlfriends and 

I joined this club in 

Gladesville, which was 

 

of the Communist Party. 

“It was a marvellous 

club, very well run and 

we had a meeting every 

week. 

“It was held over 

a produce store in 

Gladesville. 

“The president of this 

club was Bobby Cordiner. 

“We also put out a paper 

once a month and I 

ended up being editor. 

“In my lunch break 

at work I used to type 

up all these papers 

and then race back to 

George Street. There 

was a place where you 

could print.” 

Jean also worked for 

local Mayor “Mr Bond-

“Bob and I had become 

a twosome by 

then and in 1948 I was 

21 and that’s when we 

were married.” 

At the celebration of 

her life, her son Graeme

“She bought a house 

on the waterfront in

had, which was the 

hallmark of her generation, 

is that she never 

had a sense of entitlement, 

she took life as it 

came.” 

Jean was also actively 

involved in the scouting 

movement, as her autobiography 

recalls. 

“In 1960 dad died 

and shortly after that 

Graeme and (brother) 

Len joined the Scouts in 

Gladesville. 

“Bob also became 

very involved with the 

Scouts and went on all 

their scout camps and 

I remained Secretary 

until the boys left many 

years later.” 

Jean also worked for 

Halvorsen Boats for 

many years. 

“I went to the local 

 

Gladesville and they 

told me that Halvorsen 

boat builders down at 

Putney were looking for 

someone to work in the 

 

“Bob’s dad was working 

for Halvorsen, he 

used to be on the trawlers 

back in the North 

Sea in Scotland. 

“By the time I got 

there, he was working 

in the worshop as a 

splicer.” 

In later life her strong 

sense of social justice 

led to her being involved 

in the Bennelong 

Aboriginal Reconcilliation 

Group and in the 

Al-Anon support group 

for people with an alcohol 

addiction. 

“Mum was always motivated 

by her Christian 

Faith,” Graeme said. 

“God was, for her, a 

friend.” 

Completed only 

months before her 

passing, Jean’s autobiography 

concludes with 

these poignant words. 

“I’ve been an old lady 

and it is now 2017. 

“I’ve had various trips 

to the hospital for various 

things. 

“Of my generation left 

now is only my brotherin-law 

at 87 and my sister-in-law 

Ellice at 95. 

“My old girldfriend 

Peggy (88) still drives 

down from the Central 

Coast to see me. 

“I will write the sequel 

to My Story next year.” 

As Graeme concludes. 

“We’re not only losing 

a mother, we are losing 

a story.”

awareness of the condition 

amongst the community. 

Mr Gravolin said he appreciated 

the award and 

hopes it will help raise 

awareness of the role 

carers play in the community.

The new Skills Acquisition 

Program (SAP) is a 

professionally delivered 

program to develop girls

“This is the beginning 

of more structured training 

and development for 

players passionate about 

football,” Ravens Director 

of Women’s Football

“The girls will train 

three times a week under 

the leadership of a 

professional coach. 

“They will play weekly 

games against SAP 

teams from other clubs 

or Associations.” 

Coaches will be accredited
