‘I’m Aussie as
a meat pie’!
Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM this week became embroiled
in controversy over whether he has dual citizenship and therefore
not eligible to be a federal Member of Parliament.
His father was born in England and migrated to Australia with his
family when aged three in 1911.
Mr Alexander said yesterday:
“My father was born in the United Kingdom in 1907, before moving
to Australia as a very young child.
“He became an Australian Citizen as soon as he could. I understand
he renounced his British citizenship before I was born, because
he was a proud Australian.
“I was born in 1951 as an Australian citizen”.
Meanwhile Mr Alexander is currently completing his 100Km Walk

in Eastwood Park this Friday at 3pm with a free BBQ to which all
are invited.
TWT EXCLUSIVE
The new K-6 school is due to open in 2020 and
plans were released this week by Ryde MP Victor
Dominello who said a Development Application is
currently being considered by the Department of
The community will have an opportunity to view
the plans on public exhibition later this month.
The plans for the new school feature a threestorey
building that will include 43 classrooms to
accommodate up to 1,000 students as well as a
hall, a library, out of school hours care facilities
and multi-purpose sports courts.
A kiss and ride area and 40 car spaces will also
be included in the new development to help man-
school with our community” Mr Dominello said.
“The new school will showcase the latest inno-
“The new school will help meet the growing
enrolment demand in our area and shows we
are providing vital local infrastructure to support
Ryde families.”
Aurora College, which currently operates on the
site will be relocated to Mowbray Public School
Having open
eastwood

Eastwood on a daily
basis to assess the
situation with an open

Things I have noticed
are: many restaurants
have Cantonese/Mandarin
writing with no
English equivalent especially
on menus and
shop fronts, about 60
percent of the children
(Eastwood Primary
School) do not speak
Australian (English)
when emerging from
school even though they
were obviously born
here.
One side of Eastwood
is Chinese and the other
is Korean (and there is
obvious tension both
ancient and new between
them) and that
about 35 percent of

that speak little or no
English at all.
My concern is how do
you become an Australian
(Aussie) if you are not
living amongst Aussies?
Mass Immigration

a short period of time
does not seem to allow
for a median amount of
integration and assimilation.
Having said all that
everyone should be
judged as an individual
not as a group or rage.
friendly).
It’s a pity that not more
of your editorial representatives
and readers/
writers were present to
be enlightened by the
brilliant and reasoned
minds of the richly-assembled
panel from all
They included our very
Perhaps a conference/
debate of this nature is
precisely what we need
here in Sydney - given
the never-ending primal,
xenophobic letters one
has to endure reading.
Of course, readership
is optional; and participation
in the exchange
with the less-progressive,
futile.
But to see the tire-

of Mark Newman - the
defender of what we
purport to be Aussie
values, one is reminded
that “The only thing
necessary for the triumph
of evil is for good
men (women) to do (say)
nothing”!
It looks like a return to
some lessons on “What
it is to be human” is in
order.

Whilst one cannot be in
total opposition to certain
residential development
to accommodate our ever
growing population, there
is no reasonable or just
explanation for ignoring
the disturbance, the potential
danger, and the
many negatives for the
residences that can justify
this development of greed.
I urge our State and Federal
Members to support
their constituents in defeating
this ill-conceived
and poorly researched
plan that has no regard to
our lifestyle.
It is with cautious optimism
that our recently
electoral trust placed with

their support and promises
to reject this project.
I also hope as they look
squarely in the mirror of
integrity, wisdom, self-

their collective common
the voters who supported
them.
I was sitting in my car
at Meadowbank Station
waiting to collect my wife
when a young Chinese
fellow poked his head in
the window of my car to
alert me to the fact that

the rear of my car.
I thanked him, jumped
out and started jacking

on.
Not long after I started
a 40 something bloke
of “Mediterranean Appearance
needed a hand.
I said “Many thanks but
Few minutes after that
an Indian bloke about
the same age, or a bit
younger, out with his
Again I said “Thanks
but I’m OK“.
Then a couple of minutes
after that again a
more standard white
Aussie bloke about
Again I said “No thanks

which he replied “That’s
OK- I would like to think
if my girlfriend had a
similar problem someone
would come along

Now aside from the
fact this experience unfortunately
seemed to
suggest I looked older
and more decrepit than
how I imagine myself to
be it was well worth the

to see this community
spirit, such as I feared
no longer existed, in action
in Meadowbank .

EACH YEAR we observe
Remembrance
Day at the eleventh
hour of the eleventh
day of the eleventh
month as the anniversary
of the Armistice

The end of the war came
a year later with the Treaty
of Versailles. The First World
War, to give it one of its titles
was “the war to end all
wars”, which of course it
didn’t.
However, the number
of casualties in combat in
that war have seldom been
equalled since.
We look back with horror
at the conditions under
which the combatants
fought, especially on the
Western Front in France
and Belgium.

2, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan,
Iraq and others - have
seen a great rise in civilian
casualties due mainly to the
use of air power and artillery.
It is good that we remind
ourselves of the great loss

as it helps to limit casualties
in future.
No current serving military
commander would accept
the huge number of dead,
wounded and missing that
occurred often on one day
in World War One.
Importantly, it would not
be accepted by governments
or people in the
western world nowadays.
THE CENTENARY of
the Armistice in World War
One is next year, 2018, and
toward marking that important
anniversary the Anzac
Memorial Centenary Project
is progressing in Sydney.
This spectacular project is
the completion of the original
architect’s design for the
War Memorial in Hyde Park.
The most visible part of
this project takes the form
of two sloping cascades of
water from the Memorial to
Liverpool Street.
However, the project also
creates underground space
under, and between, the
cascades that provides
galleries, a library, lecture
rooms all linking with the
existing Memorial.
Council
is currently preparing for a
new Community Plan.
The purpose of this plan is
to identify our Community’s
priorities, challenges and
aspirations for the future and
to drive services for the next
ten years.
The Community Plan will
address four key questions:
Where are we now?
oWhere do we want to be
in ten years’ time?
oHow will we get there?
oHow will we know when
we have arrived?
The answers to these
questions will enable Council
to understand what is important
to you, the residents
of Hunters Hill.
Your input is valuable and
will help provide clear direction
for Council’s medium
and long term priorities.
There’ll be various ways in
which you can get involved
and have your say!
Initially, Council invites you
to complete a quick online
survey which will help identify
the ‘Future Hunters Hill’
you’d like to see.
Please visit www.yourvoicehuntershill.com.au
A phone survey will also be
conducted by Iris Consulting.
This is a great opportunity
to get involved and work
together for our future.
Hunters Hill Council
Working together across
expansion of projects that
would otherwise be limited
in scope.
Five councils in northern
Sydney have partnered to
establish a Community Recycling
No council had available
operational land suitable to
establish a facility, so the
Remembering the War To End All Wars
IN AN exclusive for The Weekly Times, the Secretary/Vice President of Gladesville RSL Sub Branch

Next year on the 11th
of November 2018 marks
100 years since the end of
World War One.
At the 11th hour on the
11th day of the 11th month
of 1918, the Great War
ended.
At 5am that morning Germany,
bereft of manpower
and supplies and faced
with an imminent invasion,
signed an armistice agreement
with the Allies in a
railroad car outside Compiegne,
France.
The First World War left
nine million soldiers dead
and 21 million wounded.

million civilians died from
disease, starvation, or exposure.
World War One was
known as the “war to end
all wars” because of the
great slaughter and destruction
it caused.
Unfortunately, the peace

Versailles of 1919) forced
punitive terms on Germany
that destabilized Europe
and laid the groundwork
for World War Two.
At the Somme on March
21, 1918 the Germans
launched a massive offensive
and they drove the
British back about 60 kilometers,
an immense distance
considering the con-

for more than three years.
For the British, this was
the biggest crisis of the
war.
There was widespread
concern that after years of
ships
and frightful casualties,
Britain and its allies
might well lose the war.
Units from the Australian
Imperial Force were rushed
to the rescue.
One of them, the 15th
Australian Brigade, was
led by an extraordinary
character.
Brigadier-General Harold
Edward “Pompey” Elliott, a
brilliant tactician who was
remarkably brave, and renowned
for never sending
anyone anywhere he was
not willing to venture himself.
Elliott had seen plenty of
the war. He was wounded
at the Gallipoli landing.
At Lone Pine, with his inspiring
frontline presence,
four of his men won the
Victoria Cross.
His brigade however was
destroyed in the disaster
of Fromelles. Despite all
that Elliott had endured
since April 1915, he had
no doubt that the German
assault in March 1918 ushered
in the climax of the
war.
Although the Australians
fought on many fronts, the
battles of Fromelles and
Pozieres marked Australia’s
entry onto the Western
Front of the Great War.

Anzac Corps took up positions
in a quiet sector south
of Armentieres, known as
the “Nursery” The Australians
were spared from participating
in the disastrous

Nevertheless, within three
weeks of the beginning of
visions
of the AIF had committed
to the battle.
Only the 3rd Division did
not take part, having only
just recently arrived in England
from Australia.
The 5th Division, posi-

see action during the Battle
of Fromelles July 19,
1916.
Next morning the Australians
who had breached
the enemy’s lines were
forced to withdraw to their
own lines.

5,533 casualties in one
night, the worst 24 hours in
Australia’s military history.
Many fell victim to German
machine-guns and the
Australian toll at Fromelles
was equivalent to the total
Australian casualties in the
Boer War, Korean War and
Vietnam War put together.
It was a staggering disaster
that had no redeeming

Ken was in Darwin
on February 19, 1942
when waves of Japanese
planes devastated the city
in a surprise attack often
compared to the attack on
Peal Harbour.
He was guarding a petrol
depot when he saw the

in to strafe the shocked
city and bomb key targets.
“We saw the Japanese
come in and I could clearly
see the Jap pilot in the

gun at us,” he said.
“I saw one of our planes
shot down right over the
top of me, it was badly hit

Ken Walsh recalls the
Japanese had planned
the operation well, hitting
Darwin’s military and
communications targets
with precision bombing.
He also remembers that
warnings from an Australian
Coastwatcher on Melville
Island and a Catholic
Priest on Bathurst Island
were ignored and that the

“We were expecting the
Kittyhawks, due to arrive
at that very moment, ” he
said.
alised
they were Japanese
we thought they were only
dropping propaganda

when we heard the explo-

did we realise this was an
attack and a big attack.”
“I guess you could
say it did have a strong

because there we a lot
of blokes who wanted to

hit back for what they did
to Darwin.”
Ken was one of Darwin
evacuees.
“There was little we
could do stop the attack
at the time and we evacuated
to the Adelaide River,
out of danger, except for
the crocodiles.”
An infantry private with
the 2nd 19th Infantry, Ken
remembers the horror of

saw an enemy soldier.
“You wouldn’t see them,
ing
from from hidden man
holes in the ground,” he
said.
“I do remember bullets

blokes copping bullets,
one close to me was shot
in the stomach and killed.”
A world away from the

Ken’s brother Alan got a
closer look at the enemy
in the North African theatre
of operations.
“Alan was one of the
Rats of Tobruk and we
was badly wounded in the
shoulder and captured by
the Germans.
“He was treated by the
German surgeons and
managed to escaped.”
REMEMBRANCE DAY 2017
‘Lest We Forget’
Ryde Remembers hero Private Frank
Sullivan on Passchendaele centenary
A RYDE family has paid tribute to their grandfather, a war hero who was
wounded at the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium one hundred years ago.
Francis (Frank) Harold
Sullivan of 35th Australian
Battalion, was a decorated
soldier who also risked his
life as a stretcher bearer
amidst the blood and mud

Belgium.
His grand daughter Wendy
Guest recalls Frank Sullivan
teaching her wartime
songs and the pride her
family - the Hayman’s -
felt when the watched him
march in Sydney on Anzac
Day.
“Those marching songs

“ Remembering our Diggers who
served and sacrificed everything
for this great Country”
for our family and I remember
that grandpa had
a slight limp from being
wounded in the knee from
schrapnel and if he’d get
out of step on the march
he would do a quick step
to get back in step.
“We’d get dressed up
Ryde Remembers Private Frank Sullivan, who won the Military Medal for

in our best clothes for the
march and stand outside
David Jones store and wait
for him to come over to us
to say a quick hello, that
was a very special moment.”
Wendy Guest remembers
that Frank Sulklivan always
had a husky voice as
the result of a mustard gas
attack and that his throat
was treated with radium
when he returned home.
“He was also told he
would have to have his
wounded and infected leg
Remembering and
honouring our heroes
amputated but he refused
because he had important
work to do at his lighthouse
although he was
fortunate to be selected
for a unique, new irrigation
treatment at Concord
Hospital.”
Wendy believes the horror
of Passchendaele cannot
be equalled by any
modern horror in wartime.
“Even when our soldiers
were marching through the
deep mud they knew that if

into the mud their packs
would weigh them down
and they’d drown because
you could stop a march to
rescue a drowning man,”
she said.
“What made it even more

move horses and artillery
through the mud, with
bombs and bullets whizzing
around them.”
It is was in No Mans Land
in September. 1917 Sullivan
was mentioned in dispatches
and later decorated
with the Military Medal
for bravery for saving the

Grand daughter Pamela
Webber and her husband
Tom recently walked the
very ground where the heroic
action occured.
“As best as we could
work out we walked the
same earth where our
grandfather saved that

course it is overgrown with
red poppies now,” she
said.
“We traced the steps
of the battles where her
served and attended the
nightly ceremony at the
Menin Gate where to Ode
is read in memory of the
fallen Australians.”
Pamela recalls how she
felt at the time.
“It was amazement because
there are so many
graves and I came away
with the sense that this
was not so much about
retracing the steps of one
man but about one man
being a part of such a large
and horrible event.”
Frank Sullivan’s story
was told in a Newcastle
Sun article from 1920 titled
“A Brave Deed” and
by the soldiers who served
with him.
They recall the British
being trapped in No Man’s
Land, eating rations taken
from the dead men around
them.
“Their attempts to return
to the British lines
had failed as the Germans
mounted machine guns in
the shell hole alongside
them at night and during
the day they were unable
to move because of the
heavy enemy sniper activity,”
“They had been on the
verge of surrendering
Lest We Forget
Janet & Grant Fletcher
0438 543 547 0438 816 602
9 Avon Road North Ryde | Macquarie Park
when they saw the Australians
had taken over
the lines and while this
was going on the Australians
saw that the Germans
were collecting their dead
under the protection of a
Red Cross Flag and had

“It was decided they also
could have a go to rescue

Red Cross Flag.
vised
and Private Francis
Sullivan went out in to No
Mans Land.”
This story of wartime
gallantry could well end
here but the Hayman family
revealed a postscript
that resounds in the tragedy
and sadness of war.
“On his last night in hospital
before he passed
away, his thoughts drifted
back to the Western Front
and he told one of his
daughters Kathleen Hayman
that he could again
smell the horrible and acrid
smell of the trenches in his
nostrils.”
Lest we forget!
MISSING war heroes from the City of Ryde’s World War One Honour
Boards are being searched for.

were recently restored in
time for this week’s 2017
Remembrance Day commemoration.
The restoration of the
two maple and gold leaf
memorials was commissioned
by the Council as
part of the City of Ryde’s
Centenary of Anzac’s
four-year program and the
work was undertaken by
three local craftsmen.
The refurbishment involved
the boards being
dismantled, repaired and
reassembled.
The traditional gold lettering
was reapplied and
then the boards were
French polished.
That’s when the search
began.
“When the honour
boards were recovered
from storage they were in
a poor state and it was immediately
noted that one
panel from the larger Eastwood
board was missing,”
Mayor Laxale said.
“Despite exhaustive research
by Ryde’s Local
Studies Librarian, Angela
Phippen and members
torical
Society, the names
could not be found.
“Now, we are hoping
that members of the com-

missing link and we are
appealing to local families
who may have old photographs
of the Eastwood
honour board showing the
missing detail to contact
us.”

President Kim Phillips said
she hopes someone may
have taken a photo that
has the missing board in
the background.
“These honour boards
are important because
they are the only commemeration
of many
Ryde soldiers who were
killed and who don’t have
graves,” she said.
Bernie Cox from the City
of Ryde’s Centenary of
Anzac Commemoration
Committee agreed.
“It is the only historical
record we have from the
time and we want young
people to know more
about The Great War,
which was the most sig-

history.”
The Eastwood Roll of

of 177 soldiers and one
nurse.
It contains a large
central panel, with two
smaller panels either
side but the left one is
missing.
For restorer Michael
Calvert, the work was a
labour of love.
“It took 120 man hours
and it was wonderful to
do the craftsmanship I
was trained as a young
apprentice to do.”
The North Ryde School

contains the names of
47 soldiers from the local
area and of the 47
soldiers, 18 never returned
.
“Four were killed at
Gallipoli and 14 were
fatally wounded or killed
on the Western Front,”
Mayor Laxale said.
“The beautifully restored
honour boards
now hang in the public
area of the City of Ryde
Council Chambers.”
Hunters Hill school names creative
space after a musical parish priest
HUNTERS Hill’s Villa Maria Catholic School opened a
new creative arts room last week which was named in
honour of local parish priest Father Kevin Bates SM.
The new arts room
and the associated
performing arts space
were officially opened
by the Executive Director
of Catholic Schools
in Sydney, Dr Dan White
on Tuesday alongside
School Principal Kevin
Turner.
Mr Turner said the
new venue pays tribute
to Father Kevin who is
a wellknown musician
who has released several
albums of devotional
music.
“Today I have a special
announcement,” Mr
Turner said.
“It is with great pleasure
this new building
will be named as the
Father Kevin Bates Creative
Arts Room.
“This building was
worth the wait and will
serve the community
now and into the future.”
Dr White said he has
spent many hours enjoying
Fr Kevin’s music.
“Father Kevin and I
have journeyed many
miles together and I
listen to your music as
my prayer, in fact I’ve
been listening to your
music for thirty years of
my life.
“Father Kevin has inspired
us all for generations
now.”
He said he hoped the
creative arts would inspire
students.
“The creative arts let
us touch the mystery of
God in our lives.”
Father Kevin said he
was “surprised and
humbled” to have the
creative arts room
named after him.
“Childre, we can teach
others and thank God
for the gift of one another,”
he told students at
the opening ceremony
and blessing.
“Here we can grow together
and sing Jesus’
beautiful song of love.”
School Captains Hwi
Sharples and Katie
Rose paid tribute to
parents and friends who
contributed to the building
project.
The ceremony ended
when the entire school
community spontaneously
serenaded Father
Kevin with the song
“Thank You For The Music”.
The event was attended
by Lane Cove
14 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 8 November, 2017
A tribute to the late Jean Cordiner and her service to the community
The life of the late Jean Cordiner was celebrated at her funeral at the
Hunters Hill Congretation Church last Wednesday.
Ninety year old Jean
Cordiner was one of
dents
and was a Senior
Prefect at Riverside
Girls High School.
She was also the
editor of a small local
newspaper in Gladesville
when 17 years old.
Her autobiography
titled “Jean Cordiner -
My Story” looks back
at those early years,
when she met and fell in
love with her husband
Bobby.
“Two girlfriends and
I joined this club in
Gladesville, which was

of the Communist Party.
“It was a marvellous
club, very well run and
we had a meeting every
week.
“It was held over
a produce store in
Gladesville.
“The president of this
club was Bobby Cordiner.
“We also put out a paper
once a month and I
ended up being editor.
“In my lunch break
at work I used to type
up all these papers
and then race back to
George Street. There
was a place where you
could print.”
Jean also worked for
local Mayor “Mr Bond-

work in the Town Clerk’s

“Bob and I had become
a twosome by
then and in 1948 I was
21 and that’s when we
were married.”
At the celebration of
her life, her son Graeme
Cordiner takes up the
story.
“Mum became the
matriarch of our family
and with her passing is
the passing of an era in
Ryde,” he said.
“She bought a house
on the waterfront in
dred
pounds and at
that time Gladesville
was still the wild west,
it was just bush with no
electricity, one tap and
kerosine lamps.
“That was what life
was like here then.
The late Jean Cordiner’s sons Graeme and Len and sister Diana Unsworth hold Jean’s autobiography
at her funeral and celebration of her life with family and friends at the Hunters Hill Congregational
Church. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO
“All her life she had
compassion for others
and if she felt strongly
about something she
would speak out about
it because she had that
quality of social justice.
“The other quality she
had, which was the
hallmark of her generation,
is that she never
had a sense of entitlement,
she took life as it
came.”
Jean was also actively
involved in the scouting
movement, as her autobiography
recalls.
“In 1960 dad died
and shortly after that
Graeme and (brother)
Len joined the Scouts in
Gladesville.
“Bob also became
very involved with the
Scouts and went on all
their scout camps and
I remained Secretary
until the boys left many
years later.”
Jean also worked for
Halvorsen Boats for
many years.
“I went to the local

Gladesville and they
told me that Halvorsen
boat builders down at
Putney were looking for
someone to work in the

“Bob’s dad was working
for Halvorsen, he
used to be on the trawlers
back in the North
Sea in Scotland.
“By the time I got
there, he was working
in the worshop as a
splicer.”
In later life her strong
sense of social justice
led to her being involved
in the Bennelong
Aboriginal Reconcilliation
Group and in the
Al-Anon support group
for people with an alcohol
addiction.
“Mum was always motivated
by her Christian
Faith,” Graeme said.
“God was, for her, a
friend.”
Completed only
months before her
passing, Jean’s autobiography
concludes with
these poignant words.
“I’ve been an old lady
and it is now 2017.
“I’ve had various trips
to the hospital for various
things.
“Of my generation left
now is only my brotherin-law
at 87 and my sister-in-law
Ellice at 95.
“My old girldfriend
Peggy (88) still drives
down from the Central
Coast to see me.
“I will write the sequel
to My Story next year.”
As Graeme concludes.
“We’re not only losing
a mother, we are losing
a story.”
temperatures are forcing “Animals often move
Epping resident Alan named top carer in the state
“Alan’s
mentia,
has been named the 2017 NSW Carer of the Year.
Epping’s Alan Gravolin
was recognised this
week for not only for
his ongoing dedication
to the care of his wife
Lynne, who is living with
younger onset dementia,
but also his support
of other carers and his
commitment to raising
awareness of the condition
amongst the community.
Mr Gravolin said he appreciated
the award and
hopes it will help raise
awareness of the role
carers play in the community.
“It is an honour to receive
this award which
recognises the remarkable
work of carers,” Mr
Gravolin said
“The NSW Carers
Awards help to shed light
on the important role of
carers in the communityand
I encourage other
carers to reach out and
find support.”
Executive Director
Consumer Engagement,
Policy and Research at
Dementia Australia Kale
Stokes, said Alan’s story
is a wonderful example
of the commitment thousands
of Australians are
currently making to caring
for people living with
dementia.
determination
to ensure his wife Lynne
was able to maintain a
good quality of life following
diagnosis is admirable,”
Kale said.
“This commitment
meant Lynne was able
to remain at homefor as
long as possible, before
eventually moving into
full time residential care.
“Alan has also actively
nurtured Lynne’s passion
for art, enabling her to
continue to enjoy this important
aspect of her life.
“Equally, Alan’s work
Organised Interiors Stylish Exteriors
supporting other carers
in the community and
his willingness to get
involved in advocacy
work for our organisation
in his role as Dementia
Advocate are to becommended.”
With an estimated
413,000 people living
currently with dementia
in Australia - a figure
that is expected to grow
to more than 1.1 million
people by 2056 - Dementia
Australia said the
incredible work of carers
in our community is going
to become increasingly
important.
“On behalf of everybody
at Dementia Australia,
I would like to
thank Alan and congratulate
him on this much
deserved recognition,”
said Kale.
Outside of his caring
role, Alan has been a
Lifeline counsellor and
a coach in the Stronger
Carers program, a support
group which aims to
equip carers with coping
mechanisms and tips to
help them manage their
role more effectively.
Minister for Disability
Services Ray Williams
said the NSW Carers
Awards aim to recognise
the contribution of unpaid
carers in the community.
“The NSW Government
recognises the efforts
of more than 905,000
carers in the State who
provide unpaid support
to members of our community
with disability,
chronic illness, mental
illness, dementia or frail
age,” he said.
One indicator that provides
an insight into the
strength of the market is the
“We welcomed spring
with open arms and along
with it, the number of
homes that come to mar-
said.
“This year it was interesting
dare I say it, Melbourne
In Strata ... because we care!
Mayor and residents heartbroken
with chopping of Lane Cove trees
The trees were recently
cut down to
make way for a development
but despite
residents claims that
Lane Cove Council
should be held accountable,
Mayor
Pam Palmer said she
is just as distressed
as the residents.
“Of course I’m upset,
it’s awful we’ve
lost these wonderful
trees but their removal
was approved by
a state government
joint regional planning
panel, not by
Ivanhoe Estate Community
Information & Feedback Session
As the first major project being delivered under the NSW
Government’s Future Directions policy and the Communities
Plus program, the redevelopment of Ivanhoe Estate at Macquarie
Park (corner of Herring Road and Epping Road) will see a well
located, socially integrated community come to life over the
next 10 to 12 years.
Family and Community Services (FACS) will work with the Aspire
Consortium, to master plan a new community featuring worldleading
sustainability, quality community facilities and beautiful
public open spaces.
We want the residents of Ivanhoe and the surrounding community
to give us feedback and ideas to develop the master plan.
?
You’re invited to attend our Community Information
and Feedback Session
Angry residents sent us this photograph
of the Burns Bay Road trees.
Angry Lane Cove residents have blasted the chopping down of at
least ten, 20 metre tall trees at 296 Burns Bay Road.
councillors,” Mayor
Palmer said.
“I’ve checked out
the reason why and
I’m told they would
not have survived the
substantial excavation
of the site, where
trucks and equipment
also need access.
“Their removal
wasn’t illegal but I
agree with residents
that these trees were

is something we will
need to consider for
the future when we
take action to preserve
our important
tree canopy.”
Residents also expressed
concern
that trees are not be
planted to replace
lost ones and the
Mayor shares that
concern.
“It is very important
to encourage
people to plant trees
themselves although
we will preserve the
stumps of these lost
trees to become
landscaping in a
park, a place where
children can play.”
Ravens’ youngsters get a kick out of professional soccer plan
GLADESVILL Ravens
Football Club this week
launched an exciting
new program to develop
girls’ football skills.
The new Skills Acquisition
Program (SAP) is a
professionally delivered
program to develop girls
football governed by
Football NSW and the
Gladesville Ravens are a
licensed participant.
“This is the beginning
of more structured training
and development for
players passionate about
football,” Ravens Director
of Women’s Football
Janine Ligato said.
“The girls will train
three times a week under
the leadership of a
professional coach.
“They will play weekly
games against SAP
teams from other clubs
or Associations.”
Coaches will be accredited
in accordance
with the standards and

by Football NSW for SAP
coaches and assistant
coaches.
The development program
follows the National
Football Curriculum
established by the
Football Federation of
Australia and girls will
develop skills in all areas
of the game.
“This is an exciting opportunity
for girls who
might later want to pursue
an elite playing pathway
through to the National
Premier Leagues,
W-League or even the
Matildas.”
Gladesville Ravens
have a rich history of
providing sporting opportunities
for girls and
women.

development programs
for our girls for over ten
years,” Janine said.
“This next step aligns
that goal with our existing
National Premier
League Two teams and
gives our girls the best
chance to be successful
in those sides.”
The Ravens have been
fortunate enough to appoint
Stacey Fanella as
SAP Technical Director.
“Stacey has an elite
playing and coaching
backgroun,” said
Janine. “She sits on
Football NSW Women’s
Standing Committee as
well as being a Director
of the Nepean Football
Association.
