I didn`t think anything
could compare with the
to get voted.
Recorded phone messages
letters from former
Dear Sir,
I write with a blunt
warning. Tragically crystal
meth/ice is having a
shocking impact on many
suburbs and areas of Australia.
It is true to say now that
in many parts of Australia,
crystal meth/ice is now
cheaper to buy than even
a takeaway pizza. It is very
disturbing.
I write to warn readers of
this most dangerous drug
and to highlight to readers
that it is never worth dabbling
with a drug like ice. It
is so dangerous and so addictive.
Ice is tearing a massive
number of families apart.
This sadly includes damage
to a massive number
of Indigenous communities.
In some communities,
NEW YEARS’ EVE ROAD CLOSURES
The Hunters Hill peninsula will be closed at Church
Street overpass from 1.00pm on New Years’ Eve
Sunday 31 December, as in other years, until 2.00am on
January 1, 2018.
A limited number of entry passes are available for friends
the peninsula. Residents will need to show proof of
residency, for example a driver’s licence or rates notice
to obtain a pass, with a maximum number of two passes
per household and two additional, if off-street parking is
possible on the property.
Passes are only available from the Council
The Administration Centre will be closed from 12.00pm
Garbage Collection days will be as normal, and will begin
The Council and staff wish everyone a joyous and safe
Letters
grandparents, parents and
children are all using crystal
meth.
There is a very big misconception
in the community
that alcohol is the
big issue for Indigenous
Australians. Nothing could
be further from the truth.
Close to 100% of our clients
have been impacted
by ice and shock TV ads
seem to be having no impact.
You can buy ice in many
parts of the country for as
little as $5. We want to see
governments everywhere
developing rapid response
teams to deal with a problem
that has frankly got
out of hand. People aren’t
getting the help they need
at the speed that is necessary.
The answers lie in the
development of rapid response
teams.
The under-reporting of
ice is at a huge level. This
problem is much bigger
than people realise. People
are being touched by ice
everywhere.
Young people are so vulnerable.
One of the biggest
issues is that crystal meth
is so potent, it does not
take much for people to become
addicted.
People end up feeling like
they are bullet proof and
invincible. This is just one
of the dangers of this drug.
We are asking governments
everywhere to take
action because of the scale
of the problem.
I would also like to highlight,
people can get more
in new technology and new
clean generation.
The carbon tax, which encouraged
new investment
and was having a real impact
was abolished.
Then there was the Warburton
review into the Renewable
Energy Target,
although even he as a climate
skeptic had to admit
that the RET put downward
pressure on prices.
ment
they sat on the report
ducing
the target.
In spite of all of this renewables
are picking up
again, so now Turnbull has
announced the National
Energy Guarantee. Interestingly
enough, this saw AGL
and Origin shares increase
in value.
Our coal generators are
old and worn out, we need
new generation, and more
competition.
Renewables are big employers,
and don't pollute
our soil and water. They
can be built quickly and
with batteries can run 24
hours a day.
So why must Australia
always lag behind while
China and Europe move
ahead? With our great solar
of which are free, we could
be an energy superpower.

Dear Sir,
For many Australians,
the festive season is one
of joy and connection,
where friendships and
family are celebrated,
food is shared and holiday
plans are made.
Yet for others in our
neighbourhoods, that
sense of togetherness,
warmth and belonging will
not be felt, and rather an
acute sense of loneliness
will take hold.
Christmas Day might be
lunch for one, sleeping
rough or spent with the
paralysing uncertainty of
not knowing where family
is, after being separated

There is hope. At Red
Cross loneliness is not
something to be ashamed
of. We’re there for people
who have nobody else:
calling and visiting, driving
them to appointments, offering
one-to-one support
to those struggling with
mental illness, or giving a
warm welcome to those
seeking safety from violence
or persecution.
We know loneliness
doesn’t discriminate. It
stealthily creeps into our
lives, no matter our age,
gender or ethnicity, and
takes hold when tragedy
happens, like losing
a loved one, a divorce or
losing your job. And if you
don’t catch it early, loneliness
can reach chronic lev-

But it’s bigger than that.
When there’s no one by
your side, and you’re feeling
deeply isolated, communities
start to become
less trusting, there’s more
fear and places start to feel
less safe.
It’s time for Australians
to change that. Red Cross
is calling on you to make
this the Season of Belonging,
by taking simple steps.
Be kind on social media,
say hello to your neighbours,
trouble.
Dear Sir,
Discrimination against
women is certainly rife at
the moment.
The Friends of Lane Cove
National Park recently
gathered to celebrate
Christmas and 50 years
since the formation of the
National Parks and Wildlife
Service.
We were shattered to
learn that our beloved
Area Manager, Michele
Cooper, had been retrenched.
Her only fault was that
she was “too close to the
tributes
one would’ve
thought most people in positions
of authority would
aspire to.
Many people would remember
Michele’s promotion
of the Opening of the
Kukundi Discovery Trail at
Lane Cove National Park
Headquarters in 2015.

was not Michele’s only
achievement. Others included
the LCNP Plan of
Management, the Chase
Alive Discovery Program
and the Volunteer Policy.
She has been with National
Parks for 25 years in
various roles and as Area
Manager for 5 years.
The restructure carried
ronment
and Heritage is
endless.
Many valuable and ex-
One would think we need
more women in managerial
roles and not removing
so capable, experienced,
popular and supportive of

We and the environment

IN OUR age of politically
correct euphemisms,
in which toilets
become “bathrooms”
even when there is no
bath in sight, death becomes
“passing” and
euthanasia becomes
“assisted dying,” we
desperately seek to
take the hard edges
of the truth with softer
verbal packaging.
In this same world
where we seek to anaesthetise
reality so that we
can somehow remain
comfortable, in control
and germ-free, we avoid
the use of the word “sin”
as if the sinful part of life
has gone out of fashion.
We can then justify
everything we do that
once fell under the heading
of the seven deadly
sins!
Well I’m sorry to disappoint,
but sin is as alive
and well as ever it was.
When we hear this, we
may immediately divert
our attention to acts of
terrorism, racism, domestic
violence, oppressive
policies, all of which
are caused by “others, “
who in the moral lexicon
of Donald Trump are “the
bad guys.”
* * *
WE LOOK in the mirror
probably each day and
see the signs of ageing,
weight loss or gain,
tiredness, spots bumps
and all manner of deterioration.
We seem to have no
trouble attending to
these with our lotions,
injections, creams and
masks!
view the state of our own
soul.
Our many euphemisms,
along with our
preoccupation with
work, entertainment,
wealth, appearance and
status, serve to save us
from looking at our souls
too closely.
It’s a sick society indeed
that runs for cover
whenever the signs of
our wounded self dare to
surface.
It’s a wonderful paradox
that a healthy, joyful,
liberated self can emerge
from a good honest visit
to the heart of things,
within ourselves and
among ourselves.
Standing face to face
with our sins, (and I can
easily lend you some if
you are a bit short!), we
are stripped naked and
our defences are gone.
However, in that moment,
we discover that
we are not alone.
It’s then we come faceto-face
with that Love
which conceived and
birthed us. It is that Love
which breaks through
into our sinful self and
sinful world for which we
wait during Advent and
which we celebrate each
Christmas time.
When this Love breaks
through, our sinful self
has nowhere to hide and
nothing to fear.
Our sinful self is held in
the arms of utter forgiveness.
Revised Northern
District Plan
In late October 2017,
the Greater Sydney
Commission released
5 draft District Plans for
public comment with
the exhibition closing
on 15 December 2017.
Council considered the
revised Plan which references
the need for
more open space and

importance of schools
as a social connector,
however it does not
identify the schools or

a priority for expansion
due to population
growth. Both the original
and revised district
plans rely heavily on
collaboration between
under the carpet and
nothing is beyond the
embrace of this love and
mercy.
In this utterly truthful
encounter, there is no
need for euphemisms,
avoidance or distractions.
* * *
THIS LOVE is more
than enough to hold our
gaze, heal our wounds,
satisfy our deepest hungers.
So loved and forgiven,
we cannot help but become
bearers of this
Love for others.
It is now our turn to
give birth to this Love
at every opportunity. It
doesn’t have to be trailblazing,
exciting, mindblowing
or awesome or
any of the other epithets
we love to use to describe
today’s peak experiences.
It can be something
as simple as a humble
birth in a stable full of
the dung of life and the
warmth of innocence
such as that provided
by the animals at Bethlehem
so long ago.
Dare we visit our sinful
selves this Christmas
and encounter there the
Love that alone makes
all things new?
ago.
In addition to his medical
and media careers Dr
John showed his heart of
gold by establishing his
Medi Aid Centre Foundation
which now has over
Top results all round for Marist Eastwood students
MARIST College Eastwood has again achieved outstanding academic
results in 2017.
These began last term
when the NAPLAN results
were released earlier
in the year.
They follow the pattern
of recent years with
results being well above
the state average whilst

growth.
82.5 per cent of Year
9 students had greater
than or equal to expected
learning growth in Reading;
The percentage of students
at Marist College
Eastwood achieving
Band 10 in Grammar and
Punctuation in 2017 is
almost double 2016 and
almost triple 2015;
The percentage of students
achieving Band 10
in Numeracy is double
the State percentage;
Year 9 scored above
CEC or State in all aspects
of the test;
The percentage of Year

is above the state in all
aspects of the test, with
Reading and Numeracy
more than 20 per cent
above State;
The percentage of Year
9 students performing
below national minimum
standards is very low
(less than 3 per cent) and
lower than the State in all
aspects of the test.
The College is proud
of what their boys have
achieved.
Marist is a comprehensive
school; accepting
and catering for boys of
all abilities.
Nevertheless, with the
support of their teachers,
and as a result of their

they have displayed their
true potential. They will
continue to monitor trend
data in NAPLAN to as-

pedagogical practices as
part of their continuous
improvement approach
to learning and teaching
at the college.
The 2017 HSC results
that were released last
week further highlighted
the academic success of
the college.
tion
of the great work
ing
their boys for assessment
and examinations.
What is particularly
important to note is the
consistency in which the
College now achieves in
the top two bands.
They continue to score
well in Bands 5 and 6.
The College achieved
63 Band 6s and 218 Band
5s this year and this reaf-
tion
as a high performing
comprehensive school .
Overall 89 per cent of
subjects were above
State average with 77
per cent of students receiving
a Band 5 and /
or Band 6 in one or more
subjects.
Principal Mark Woolfood
complimented both
teachers and students
at the recent Academic
Awards night when he
said:
“Our academic results

for the college.
“The achievements
from the Class of 2017
continue the trend of
strong results at Marist
College Eastwood.
“I acknowledge the hard
work and commitment of
our students, excellent
and committed teaching,
and the support of the
Ryde’s 2018 World Cup party
RYDE residents who can’t get to Russia for next year’s FIFA World Cup will get the
next best at thing at one or more local ‘live sites’.
Live sites give fans a
chance to experience exciting
sporting events,
such as the quadren-

Olympic Games, on a big
screen in a festive, family
atmosphere.
It’s not an idea Ryde
Mayor Jerome Laxale has
just plucked out of thin air,
having experienced the
thrill of live sites more than
a decade ago as a travelling
Socceroos fan during
the 2006 World Cup in
Germany.
“I went to the World Cup
in Germany and went to
a few live sites and - particularly
for the footballing
community - it’s a way to
get together and watch a
game,” Mayor Laxale told
The Weekly Times.
“It’s the next best thing to
being there. When you’re
at a live site you’ve got a
couple of thousand other
people watching with you
and going through the ups
and downs of a game for
90 minutes.
“If we can replicate that
here in Ryde during the
World Cup, that would be

He said that Ryde was
“becoming a footballing
city if it’s not already
that” citing the growth of
the Gladesville-Hornsby
Football Association and
its member clubs and synthetic
playing surfaces at
Christie Park, soon to be
ready for use.
“Eastwood St Andrews
AFC is one of our local
clubs celebrating its 60th
anniversary next year,” he
said.
“I know everyone involved
in the club would
love to mark the milestone
at a live site (or more) in
June with fellow members
of the footballing community,
cheering on the Socceroos.”
‘Live Sites’ really captured
the public’s attention
during Australia’s groundbreaking
hosting of the
Sydney 2000 Olympics.
Locations around Greater
Sydney were transformed
into mini-celebrations
where fans watched
the action on massive
screens which, back then,
represented the latest,
cutting-edge technology.
At this month’s Ryde
Council meeting, unanimously
supported by
his 11 fellow councillors,
Mayor Laxale proposed an
investigation into the feasibility
of one or more live
sites with jumbo screens
ment
in June, 2018.
Council’s acting GM,
George Dedes, will look
into locations for the sites
“at the very least, but not
limited to the three Socceroo
group games” and
those of South Korea,
which has a large community
in Ryde.
“We are inundated by kittens and need as
many adoptions as possible so we can save
more lives, as we get many calls per day to take
more kittens and cats at the moment” Anna said.
The kitten adoption fee of $280 ensures your
Award winning Civic Centre design thrown on the scrap heap
The controversial Beijing Institute design for a new Ryde Civic Centre

The new Ryde councillors
the International Design
dumped the design on
Tuesday night, despite it
winning the previous (Mayor
Pickering led) council’s international
design competition
and it’s Chinese designers
pocketing the prize
money.
New Mayor Jerome Laxale
said reasons the Chinese
design has been scrapped
include an unacceptable reliance
on 600 to 700 apartments,
high rise towers and
a blow out in costs.
“The winning entry from
Competition has proved to
be unworkable, as predicted
at its inception,” Mayor Laxale
said.
“The design competition
itself has wasted well
over $1 million in ratepayers
money and our community
has rejected 500 to 600
apartments time and time
again.”
The Mayor also hit out at a
previous council decision to

abandoned Civic Centre to
luxury premises at North
Ryde – which was blasted
by The Weekly Times editor
John F Booth AM in a recent
editorial – and which Mayor
-

amount” of money.
“We need to end what has
been a blight on our community,”
Mayor Laxale said.
The Mayor has requested
pare
a report on a feasible
new Civic Centre which will
include council chambers,
administrative space, meeting
rooms, a performance
space and retail space.
“We will need to generate
income from this site,”
he said.
The Mayor did not rule
out retaining and restoring
the existing and vacant civic
centre building but will await

early next year.
He also gave an assurance
that Ryde ratepayers
and residents living next
to the Civic Centre would
be fully consulted and their
opinions would be respected
and valued.
The Civic Centre site has
been a huge embarrassment
Missionary priest to serve Ryde-Gladesville
The Catholic Parish of Ryde-Gladesville has a new parish
priest.
Father Greg Morgan
FMVD arrived from Rosebery
Parish last week after
a colourful career that
has seem him work as a
missionary priest in ministries
as varied as the
Hispanic streets of San
Francisco and the cloistered
corridors of Rome.
Although widely travelled
he said he is delighted
to have found
a new home at historic
St Charles Borromeo
Catholic Church in Ryde
and Our Lady Queen of
Peace Catholic Church in
Gladesville.
He also has a strong

Patrician College, being
schooled by the Patri-

years.
“I really feel at home
here, right from the very
beginning I can say I love
it here,” he said.
Father Morgan is from
the Catholic Order of
Verbum Dei, a worldwide
Catholic and evangelistic
movement which aims to
bring the Word Of God
(Verbum Dei) into people’s
lives and hearts.
“My spirituality is to
explore the readings at
Mass, explore the scriptures
in everyday life and
to build community,” he
said.
“My aim is to support
the wonderful community
we already have here.
“I know that we are living
in particularly challenging
times, where
people work many long
hours and that we do lose
sight of what is beautiful
and we are lacking what
is spiritual and joyful.”
Within hours of his arrival,
Father Morgan has
struck those around him
with his sense of joy
and love for others and
the word will soon get

Italian and Spanish.
Father Morgan also has
a Bachelor of Commerce
from NSW University and
worked as a trainee auditor
for Price Waterhouse,
but what local people
may not know is that he
became a priest through
an unusual encounter on
a train in 1986.
“I had my calling at
Villawood Railway Station,
when I was 22 years
old,” he said.
“I suddenly felt I had
been called to talk to a
Laotian man, a migrant,
a voice inside me urged
me to talk to him, but
I felt embarrassed to
approach a complete
stranger.”
Father Morgan regretted
not listening to his
inner voice but as fate
would have it, he met the
man again, exchanged
addresses and learned
that his name was Teo
Pham and that he lived
in a half way house for
disabled, traumatised
veterans of the Vietnam
War.
“For the next six
months I’d come by
each week to teach them
English,” he said.
“From there I met the
Verbum Dei missionaries
and I just connected,
I knew I had been called
to be a missionary and
my calling absolutely
stunned my family.”
Ordained in Majorca,
Spain in 1995, this joyful
priest has served in
Colombia, Venezuela,
Spain, The Philippines,
Ireland, Germany, the
United States of America
and Italy.
“I went on to become
the Administrator General
and Vice Superior
(male congregation) of
the Verbum Dei Fraternity,”
he said.
“In saying this, I’m
not really such a great
organiser, I more of a
people person and I’m
very much for using the
talents we have here and
inspiring people.
“That fact that I’ve
been a missionary overseas
means that I also,
especially, welcome being
able to serve in this
multicultural parish.”
A constant presence
in Father Morgan’s life
is Jesus, whether present
on the altar or in the
hearts of those who seek
love and seek to love
others.
“We can love because
They recently hosted ‘Carols by Glowstick’,
an event where they transformed
their church into an indoor park with glow
sticks for candles.
The Top Ryde City based church was
also an open house for families and
members of the Ryde community who
were all invited to sing along to the live
musical items.
“Families, kids and adults, young and
elderly alike; the idea was to create a
space where everyone could get into
the spirit of Christmas,” the team at C3
Established since 1999, the team’s wish
is to extend an invite to anyone and everyone
who would like to come to church
over December and Christmas.
The C3 Church will hold Christmas services
Our Lady Queen of Peace
Family Educator and Saint
Anna Alessi said this year
is one of the worst on record
for struggling families.
“We are seeing mums
power bills, each quarter,
and they are struggling to
pay them,” Ms Alessi said.
some families have even
can’t pay their bills.
“And it is not just power
bills, some people are
struggling to meet medical
expenses and for others it
is rent and day to day living
expenses.”
This year the St Vincent
de Paul Society took the
brave step to pay the
power bills of needy families
and the phrase ‘the
power bill poor’ is now
widely used across the
welfare sector.
Yet despite this emergency
power bill payment
scheme, there are families
who have had their power
disconnected for not paying
a bill and are homeless.
Anna Alessi encounters
some of these families
through her work with the
St Vincent de Paul outreach
van and concedes
that the van’s
clients no longer conform
to the stereotype of the
city destitute.
“It is no longer just old
men, it is families with little
children, it really breaks
your heart but we do the
best we can to help them
and even pack lunches so
the children can still go to
school.”
Ms Alessi also meets parents
whose self esteem

been shattered by their inability
to pay the bills.
“Of course these parents
are angry, there is
so much resentment out
there, especially because
of the letters of demand
they get from these large
companies.
“These demands really
demoralise people when
they know they can’t pos-

they can even get angry
at us but then they understand
that we’re not like
the large companies, we
are here because we have
love and compassion for
others.”
The Weekly Times has
stood up for people struggling
to pay power bills
and has called out the
greedy power companies
whose bill hikes of 30
to 40 per cent are all the
more deplorable because

false rhetoric of climate
change.
At the same time, this
newspaper applauds charitable
organisations like St
Vincent de Paul and the
generous people in our local
community who donate
to them.
“It is sad that this is happening
in our day and age
and it shouldn’t be,” Anna
Alessi said.
“Here we are in the middle
of summer and people
are scared to turn on an
air conditioner or a fan because
they’re afraid of their
power bill.”

against corporate greed is
through love and compassion,
then Anna Alessi and
the parishioners of Ryde-
Gladesville (and other
Christians) who put social
justice into action are frontline
heroes.
“I love my job, I love being
among people, being able
to help or just to have a
friendly chat, to show that
someone cares,” Anna
said.
“I know that there are
many, many people we
still need to help and my
Christmas wish for them is
to be safe and to know that
there are kind hearted people,
who love them.”The
St Vincent de Paul Society
Lifeline Christmas Message:
Give ‘The Gift of Hope’ this festive season
LIFELINE is encouraging Australians to ‘give the gift of hope’ to
those in their darkest hours this Christmas, as the national charity
prepares to receive about 40,000 requests for help over the next
two weeks.
Wishing you the
compliments of
the Season and
Best Wishes for
the New year
Kim Toyer-Uttley
Lifeline Australia CEO
Bob Gilkes said that a
small donation will help
the organisation make it
so no Australian in crisis
or thinking about suicide
has to be alone.
“While many people look
forward to celebrating this
time of year, it can be a
stressful period for many
-

and excessive alcohol
consumption,” Mr Gilkes
said.
“So, we’re asking people
to be mindful of stress and
loneliness in the community
this Christmas – not
just on Christmas Day, but
in the days and weeks that
follow. For people in crisis
or thinking about suicide,
the best gift you can give
is to ensure they get the
care and connection they
need to get through tough
times.
“You can fund a call
with one of our Crisis
Supporters for $26 and
ence
to someone over the
Christmas or New Year’s
period. With Australians
due to spend $11 billion
on Christmas presents in
2017, this is one gift that
can truly have a profound
impact on friends, loved
ones and whole communities.”
This Christmas, Lifeline
Australia is sharing the
story of 24-year-old Trent
, who attempted suicide

head injury left him with a
long road back to physical
and mental health.
While Trent survived that
attempt, his thoughts of
suicide returned earlier in
2017 after going through a

“I was scared to die. I
really didn’t want to die. I
was afraid to hurt myself,”
Trent said, recounting the
moments that led him to
call Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis
line.
“The call to Lifeline was
everything. It was nonprejudice,
it was understanding.
It was not pretending
that you knew
the answers. The guy on
the phone listened and
acknowledged everything
that I felt… he gave me
hope.”
Mr Gilkes said Trent’s
story of positive recovery
was a powerful ex-

compassionate and nonjudgemental
conversation
can make.
“It only takes a moment
to check in with a friend or
loved one, to listen and let
them know you are there
for them,” Mr Gilkes said.
“If you’re concerned
someone you know is
thinking about suicide,
it’s important to ask the
question: ‘are you thinking
about suicide?’. By asking
Real Estate & Investment
Pros and cons of buying
property in super
TOO many people set up a SMSF to buy a property, who shouldn’t really be doing so.
At the same time, there
are many it really suits
who just haven’t got their
head around it yet...that
buying in SMSF ticks both
the tax minimisation and
Asset Protection boxes.
When your capacity to
service loans is assessed,
for lending outside Super,
the bank takes into
account at all your commitments
and will NOT
account for the income
you’re forced to put in Super
(your ‘SG’ or Superannuation
Guarantee).
However, when it comes
to SMSF’s the banks can
consider only your regular
contributions into Super
and the rental income the
acquired asset will generate.
I helped a dentist buy her
surgery building last week
and it actually wouldn’t
have worked outside super,
given her numerous
other loans.
Anyway, she’s much

SMSF tax haven… great

3 years with no Establishment
Fee. The variance
amongst the banks’ rates
in this space is crazy.

can’t give anything other
than general advice. Plus I
have chosen to specialise
only in lending, so I’d get
sued harder LOL.
But what I can tell you
is why only months ago,
I actually purchased our

SMSF! …if you’re interested…
The purchase price was
$1.52m.
I snapped it up two
weeks prior to the auction,
just loved it, it used
to be the CBA building
on the Hume Highway in

kid, and more recently a
Curves gym.
The cheapest rate was

only lend 65% though.
But I didn’t have enough
in Super for the rest.
That’s why I had extended
the settlement period
to July 7, enough time for
Tina and myself to each
concessionally contribute
$35k in each before June
30, and then again on July
2.
The rest came from an

and was non-concessionally
contributed (we got
no tax break for that bit).
By the way, at the moment
(watch this space
though), Bankwest allow
you to unlock the equity
against your home at the
same owner-occupied
rate (the increase must
be restricted to a dollar
amount representing 50%
of your home’s value). The
other banks charge the
higher investment rate for
the cash out bit. It’s daylight
second if you want to
avoid cross-collateralising
and want part of your future
investment loan at
owner-occupied rates.

underway, being paid by
the tenant (my business).
The rent iChoice pays my
SMSF is of course a tax
deduction. However, my
SMSF only pays 15% tax
on it, rather than something
like 45% if we had
bought in our personal
names. How much that

a big number. Rent of
$90,000 x (45% - 15%) =
$27,000 annual saving.
We need to understand
that Super’s simply a different
tax environment,

Government to encourage
us to not rely on the pension.
The above shows
how powerful it can be.
Once I hang my boots up
(the loan will be repaid in
15 years) the tax rate in
Super changes to 0%.
And Capital Gains Tax is
better too. But let’s look at
the negatives of my decision
to buy it in Super:
The equity I build up in
the property will be unusable
(I can’t leverage
against this property) as
loans in Super can only be
taken to acquire
The building actually has
the scope for another level
to be built on top, but
this is not allowed when
the property is geared (to
build it I’d need to not only

the loan, but also the cost
to build!)
The paperwork! If you
have an SMSF you’d
know all about it! But I
don’t mind being a little
inconvenienced if it gives
Eastwood man charged

A KOREAN speaking
Eastwood man was
arrested last weekend
and charged with attempting
to sell North
Korean missile components
and expertise.
The 59-year-old man

Choi faces six charges
related to brokering
the sale of missile
componentry and expertise
and attempting
to transfer coal from
North Korea to Indonesia
and Vietnam.
Mr Choi did not apply
for bail which was
formally refused by
Acting Magistrate Carl
Milovanovich at Parramatta
Court.
The Eastwood resi-
son
in Australia to be
charged with brokering
sales and discussing
the supply of weapons
of mass destruction,
AFP Assistant
Commissioner Neil
Gaughan told reporters
in Sydney on Sunday.
“His actions were all
around trying to raise
revenue for the government
of North Korea,”
Mr Gaughan said.
Mr Gaughan stressed
POLICE NEWS
there had been no risk
to the Australian public
and that no weapons,
or missile componentry
had been imported
into Australia.
It is alleged Choi was
using encrypted communication
to broker
sales and discuss the
supply of weapons of
mass destruction.
“This case is like
nothing we have ever
seen on Australia soil,”
Mr Gaughan said.
FORTY EIGHT cannabis
plants were
seized from a property
in Epping on Thursday.
The property on
Midson Road was
raided around 8am by
the Ryde LAC Drug
and Organised Crime
Team, Ryde Detectives
and the North West
Metropolitan Operational
Support Group.
Police also found a
sophisticated indoor
hydroponic setup.
Ryde Local Area
Command Crime
Manager, Detective
Inspector Glyn Baker,
acknowledged support
from the local
community and said
he encouraged the
community to report
any suspicious signs
indicative of indoor
cannabis cultivation to
police.
“Some of the signs
include homes with
windows blocked out
and obscured, unusual
smells emanating from
the house, lights and
noises at all hours of
the night and suspicious
coming and going
of occupants, especially
overnight.
“Police can only do
so much, but with the
local community’s
help we can keep illicit

said Detective Inspector
Baker.
Police are urging
anyone with information
in relation to this
incident to call Crime
Ranch team raise over $15,000 for charity
The amazing team at The Ranch Hotel North Ryde have been working away at the
goodwill already raising over $15,000 for both the Movember and Leukaemia foundations
this year. During December the team is supporting the Starlight Foundation and
have set their sights on raising enough to grant a wish for a sick child. Last weekend
the team donated $5,000 to the RotaryCarols on the Common and managed to raise
another$1200 for Starlight.
Christmas Message
From Ryde Police
RYDE POLICE urge readers of The Weekly
Times to take extra care to secure their houses
and property over the upcoming holiday period.
Detective Inspector Glyn Baker, Crime Manger,
said readers can take simple precautions
to ensure their property isn’t targeted by criminals.
“Break-ins have an enormous emotional and

“By taking a few precautionary security
measures, you could prevent the need to replace
stolen goods, negotiate with insurers and
repair damage to your property.”
Police advise people leaving their homes for
a long period of time to take precautions such
as cancelling newspapers, redirecting mail and
asking a friend or neighbour to regularly check
on their property.
“Thieves usually look for cash and property
that is easy to carry and sell, such as jewellery,
electrical goods, cameras, laptops, mobile
phones, sunglasses, power tools, CDs and
computer equipment.
“Garden sheds are also popular targets for
thieves, as they are often unlocked and full of
power tools or other valuable items.”
Primary students’ sporting
excellence is recognised
FIVE students from TWT territory were among the 41 primary school
students who received medals at the recent 17th annual Sydney Archdiocesan
Primary Sports Awards.
They were St Kevin’s
Catholic Primary
School Eastwood trio
Jordan Kawtal and Julian
Ajaka (Year 6) and
Michael Ajaka (Year
4); Holy Spirit Catholic
Primary School North
Ryde pupil Olivia Wunsch
(Year 5) and St
Marks Catholic Primary
School Drummoyne
student Samira Dimeglio
(Year 6).
The students were
presented with a medallion
by former Australian
Hockeyroo Kellie
Miller at a ceremony
held at St Felix’ Catholic
Primary School in
Bankstown.
The awards recognise
young athletes from a
pool of 116 Catholic
primary schools who
have excelled at sports
during the school year.
To receive an award,
students must have
represented the Sydney
Archdiocese in a
NSW Catholic Primary
Schools (NSWCPS)
MacKillop team or
NSW Primary Schools
Sports Association
(NSWPSSA) State team
and demonstrated a
high level of sporting
achievement in their
schools.
Three students from
St Kevin’s Catholic Primary
Eastwood were
honoured at the awards
including brothers Michael
and Julian Ajaka.
Both athletes compete
strongly in throwing
events including
shotput and discus.
Year 6 peer Jordan is
talented at swimming
and athletics. He was
selected in NSWPSSA
teams for both sports
this year.
Samira was recognised
for her achiev-
Holy Spirit North Ryde swimming champion
Olivia Wunsch.
ments in cricket.
Olivia, a champion
swimmer, has also represented
Sydney in netball
and athletics.
At the State swimming
championships,
she swam in the 50m

and will represent NSW
in the 50m freestyle and

Games.
Guest speaker Miller
is a 2014 World Cup silver
and Commonwealth
Games gold medallist.
She told students at
the ceremony that her
dream of becoming a
Hockeyroo was realised
in 2011 after playing the
sport from age 4.
Miller (formerly White)
also described career
highs and lows.
She ruptured the anterior
cruciate ligament
in her knee three times,
and came back from

in major tournaments in
2014.
Miller’s advice to the
young sportsmen and
women was to aim
for balance, be ready
to seize opportunities
when they are given,
and be resilient in the
Wednesday 20 December, 2017 THE WEEKLY TIMES 31

Rampant Tigers clinch
Twenty20 Cup trophy
UNHERALDED keeper batsman Beau McClintock and Bermudian
international Delray Rawlins were the toast of Tiger town
last Sunday after Sydney Cricket Club brought home the 2017
Kingsgrove Sports Twenty 20 Cup championship trophy.
The talented duo
produced superb
performances on
the day as Sydney
turned in a spir-

roll Penrith by 36
runs in an enter-

the Sydney Cricket
Ground.
It was the Tigers’
second Twenty20
Cup title after previously
winning the
tournament back in
2011.
After a slow start
to his Sydney top
grade career, English
import Rawlins
has hit his straps
with both bat and
ball in the lead up to
the Christmas break.
The 20 year old
Sussex all rounder
nal
with McClintock
scoring an unbeaten
41 to help the Tigers
post 7-158 from
their 20 overs.
Sydney revelled in
the pressure-cooker
moments to dismiss
the Panthers for 122.
Earlier in the day,
the Tigers toppled
Sutherland by 32
runs to win the Six-
-
nal and advance to
the Twenty20 Cup
decider with Mc-
Clintock cracking

46 balls and Rawlins
snaring 2-21.
They were supported
by all rounder Nathan
Sowter (36 not
out and 2-17); Ryan
Felsch (22); Nic Bills
(2-29) and emerging
cub Ben Manenti (1-
23).
Penrith, who
boasted a strong
lineup that featured
Sydney Sixers stars
Sam Billings and
Jordan Silk, were
best served by Ryan
Gibson (30), Brent
Williams (2-19), Michael
Castle (2-27)
and Luke Hodges
(2-29).
Under the guidance
of Coaching Director
Michael Haire, club
captain Dan Smith,
chairman Neil Maxwell,
General Manager
Greg Healy and
predecessor David
Kelly the Sydney
club has developed
some of the best
young talent in the
State.
The Tigers won
the U/16 A.W Green
Shield, second
grade and fourth
grade premiership
trophies last summer
and were pipped for
the Club Championship
these past two
seasons.
Now they’ve added
more Twenty20
silverware to their
trophy cabinet and
have set their sights

grade championship
in the New Year.
Sowter shines in Sydney return
SPIN twins Nathan Sowter and Delray Rawlins shared the limelight as

note in the NSW Premier Cricket competition last weekend.
The talented leg spinners
grabbed seven wickets between
them as the Tigers
registered a comprehensive
six wicket victory over
Northern District last Sat-
ture
at Drummoyne Oval.
Sowter, back at Drummoyne
after completing
his English county cricket
commitments with the
Middlesex club, produced
a stellar performance in

and help Sydney rout the
Rangers for 135.
Bermudian international
Rawlins provided strong

ten.
Northern District won the
toss and elected to bat

Colley (31) and Henry Hunt
(28) putting on an opening
stand of 61.
But the Tigers’ spinning
trio of Sowter, Rawlins and
Ben Manenti turned the
match when they collectively
triggered a dramatic
batting collapse as the
Rangers lost nine wickets
for 74 runs.

Manenti opened the in-

59 balls to give Sydney a
rollicking start in its run
chase.
20 year old Manenti

and two sixes after earlier

The Tigers (4-136)
eclipsed the Rangers’ tally
in the 28th over with Harry
Dalton (25 not out) and
keeper Beau McClintock
(24 not out) unconquered
at the crease.
In second grade action,
a whirlwind century by David
Ball and an unbeaten
77 from Clayton Waters
steered Northern District
to a thrilling six run victory
over premiers Sydney
at Mark Taylor Oval in Asquith.
Ball thumped a brilliant

sixes and ten boundaries
in his team’s total of
5-262 and shared a crucial

167 with Waters after the
Rangers were tottering at
4-88.
The Tigers commenced
Nicholls signing a coup
for Carrington’s crew
RYDE Eastwood Touch Football Association power
brokers Ron Ryan and Craig Carrington have pulled
out the big guns as they chase championship glory in
the New Year.

coup when he secured
the signature of Australian
Open Mixed captain Cameron
Nicholls for his Attractive
Blinds juggernaut.
But the sports savvy
Ryan - head honcho of
the mighty Ryan Wilks
franchise - upped the ante
when he negotiated lucrative
deals for USA World
Cup playmaker David Marando,
former Wests Tigers
ace Tim Moltzen, versatile
Matt Ryan plus a host of
current NRL stars.
Ryan Wilks claimed First
Division bragging rights in
the lead up to the Christmas
break with a vital victory
over Carrington’s All
Stars at Morrison Park.
Both clubs are tipped to

decider later in the summer
with kingpins Carrington
and Ryan keen to
bolster their star-studded
rosters for the business
end of the season.
The crafty Nicholls of
Gladesville, who helped
world champions Australia
their run chase in blazing
style with centurion Matthew
Rodgers (101) and
Liam Gibson (77) posting
an opening stand of 118
but fell agonisingly short of
their target.
a persistent Carrington
out feelers.
“Carro is a good friend
and a persuasive character
- I thought I’d take up
the challenge to play in a
tough competition,” revealed
Nicholls.
The Trans Tasman series
triumph was a bitter sweet
experience for Cameron,
who snapped his collar-

up 9-6 victory over the Kiwis.
The skilful Nicholls sustained
the injury while attempting
to score a touchdown
just after the half
time break and was sidelined
for six weeks.
He was forced to watch
the remaining two Mixed
matches from the side-
role as the Aussies toppled
New Zealand 14-7 and 11-
Merrier Christmas
for Tigers 2018!
BY THE ONE EYED TIGER
Tigers fans and
Very Merry Christmas
as they look forward
to a much happier and
Gggrrreat New Year 2018.
All this renewed
optimism and hope is
thanks to Tigers new
supercoach and friend of
Santa Claus Ivan Cleary.
Since the arrival of
Ivan on the scene the
atmosphere and future
has done a U-turn for the
better!
From the ruins
of board and club
mismanagement over
recent years Ivan has
almost singlehandedly
resurrected the club to
assemble a team for
premiership honours
in 2018 and the years
ahead.
We reckon if Ivan had
come a little earlier we
would’ve still had Teddy,
Woodsie and Mitch
Moses with us.
However we now have
a most impressive lineup
in training comprising
not so much a team
of champions but a
potential champion team.
