I write with a blunt 

warning. Tragically crystal 

meth/ice is having a 

shocking impact on many 

suburbs and areas of Australia. 

It is true to say now that 

in many parts of Australia, 

crystal meth/ice is now 

cheaper to buy than even 

a takeaway pizza. It is very 

disturbing. 

I write to warn readers of 

this most dangerous drug 

and to highlight to readers 

that it is never worth dabbling 

with a drug like ice. It 

is so dangerous and so addictive. 

Ice is tearing a massive 

number of families apart. 

This sadly includes damage 

to a massive number 

of Indigenous communities.

Street overpass from 1.00pm on New Years’ Eve 

Sunday 31 December, as in other years, until 2.00am on

A limited number of entry passes are available for friends 

and family of residents and commercial business on 

the peninsula. Residents will need to show proof of 

residency, for example a driver’s licence or rates notice 

to obtain a pass, with a maximum number of two passes 

per household and two additional, if off-street parking is 

possible on the property. 

Passes are only available from the Council 

Customer Service Centre until midday this Friday 

December 22 

 

The Administration Centre will be closed from 12.00pm 

Friday 22 December 2017 to Monday 1 January 2018

You can buy ice in many 

parts of the country for as 

little as $5. We want to see 

governments everywhere 

developing rapid response 

teams to deal with a problem 

that has frankly got 

out of hand. People aren’t 

getting the help they need 

at the speed that is necessary. 

The answers lie in the 

development of rapid response 

teams. 

The under-reporting of 

ice is at a huge level. This 

problem is much bigger 

than people realise. People 

are being touched by ice 

everywhere. 

Young people are so vulnerable. 

One of the biggest 

issues is that crystal meth 

is so potent, it does not 

take much for people to become 

addicted. 

People end up feeling like 

they are bullet proof and 

invincible. This is just one 

of the dangers of this drug. 

We are asking governments 

everywhere to take 

action because of the scale 

of the problem.

There is hope. At Red 

Cross loneliness is not 

something to be ashamed 

of. We’re there for people 

who have nobody else: 

calling and visiting, driving 

them to appointments, offering 

one-to-one support 

to those struggling with 

mental illness, or giving a 

warm welcome to those 

seeking safety from violence 

or persecution. 

We know loneliness 

doesn’t discriminate. It 

stealthily creeps into our 

lives, no matter our age, 

gender or ethnicity, and 

takes hold when tragedy 

happens, like losing 

a loved one, a divorce or 

losing your job. And if you 

don’t catch it early, loneliness 

can reach chronic lev- 

 

 

But it’s bigger than that. 

When there’s no one by 

your side, and you’re feeling 

deeply isolated, communities 

start to become 

less trusting, there’s more 

fear and places start to feel 

less safe.

women is certainly rife at 

the moment. 

The Friends of Lane Cove 

National Park recently 

gathered to celebrate 

Christmas and 50 years 

since the formation of the 

National Parks and Wildlife 

Service. 

We were shattered to 

learn that our beloved 

Area Manager, Michele 

Cooper, had been retrenched. 

Her only fault was that 

she was “too close to the

verbal packaging. 

In this same world 

where we seek to anaesthetise 

reality so that we 

can somehow remain 

comfortable, in control 

and germ-free, we avoid 

the use of the word “sin” 

as if the sinful part of life 

has gone out of fashion. 

We can then justify 

everything we do that 

once fell under the heading 

of the seven deadly 

sins! 

Well I’m sorry to disappoint, 

but sin is as alive 

and well as ever it was. 

When we hear this, we 

may immediately divert 

our attention to acts of 

terrorism, racism, domestic 

violence, oppressive 

policies, all of which 

are caused by “others, “ 

who in the moral lexicon 

of Donald Trump are “the 

bad guys.”

see the signs of ageing, 

weight loss or gain, 

tiredness, spots bumps 

and all manner of deterioration. 

We seem to have no 

trouble attending to 

these with our lotions,

view the state of our own 

soul. 

Our many euphemisms, 

along with our 

preoccupation with 

work, entertainment, 

wealth, appearance and 

status, serve to save us 

from looking at our souls 

too closely. 

It’s a sick society indeed 

that runs for cover 

whenever the signs of 

our wounded self dare to 

surface. 

It’s a wonderful paradox 

that a healthy, joyful, 

liberated self can emerge 

from a good honest visit 

to the heart of things, 

within ourselves and 

among ourselves. 

Standing face to face 

with our sins, (and I can 

easily lend you some if 

you are a bit short!), we 

are stripped naked and 

our defences are gone. 

However, in that moment, 

we discover that 

we are not alone. 

It’s then we come faceto-face 

with that Love 

which conceived and 

birthed us. It is that Love 

which breaks through 

into our sinful self and 

sinful world for which we 

wait during Advent and 

which we celebrate each 

Christmas time. 

When this Love breaks 

through, our sinful self 

has nowhere to hide and 

nothing to fear. 

Our sinful self is held in 

the arms of utter forgiveness. 

Nothing is brushed

selves this Christmas 

and encounter there the

Dr John F Knight AM celebrated his 90th birthday with a 

luncheon for 150 guests at Biviano’s Restaurant and Event 

Centre Dural last Sunday. 

The merry media medic of 

TV, radio and press fame 

also known as Dr James 

Wright was in good form 

at his irrepressible best 

despite a recent operation. 

Speakers spoke in glowing 

terms of the remarkable 

life and career of 

“one of the greatest every 

Australians” as described 

by surgeon Brian Morgan 

who graduated with Dr 

John nearly seventy years 

ago. 

In addition to his medical 

and media careers Dr 

John showed his heart of 

gold by establishing his 

Medi Aid Centre Foundation 

which now has over 

one thousand residential 

units for low cost housing

Among the guests present

who introduced Dr John 

to radio and Bruce Ferrier 

of Grace Gibson Productions

Award winning Civic Centre design thrown on the scrap heap 

The controversial Beijing Institute design for a new Ryde Civic Centre 

 

The new Ryde councillors 

the International Design 

dumped the design on 

Tuesday night, despite it 

winning the previous (Mayor 

Pickering led) council’s international 

design competition 

and it’s Chinese designers 

pocketing the prize 

money. 

New Mayor Jerome Laxale 

said reasons the Chinese 

design has been scrapped 

include an unacceptable reliance 

on 600 to 700 apartments, 

high rise towers and 

a blow out in costs. 

“The winning entry from 

Competition has proved to 

be unworkable, as predicted 

at its inception,” Mayor Laxale 

said. 

“The design competition 

itself has wasted well 

over $1 million in ratepayers 

money and our community 

has rejected 500 to 600 

apartments time and time 

again.” 

The Mayor also hit out at a 

previous council decision to 

 

abandoned Civic Centre to 

luxury premises at North 

Ryde – which was blasted 

by The Weekly Times editor 

John F Booth AM in a recent 

editorial – and which Mayor 

-

Missionary priest to serve Ryde-Gladesville 

The Catholic Parish of Ryde-Gladesville has a new parish 

priest. 

Father Greg Morgan 

FMVD arrived from Rosebery 

Parish last week after 

a colourful career that 

has seem him work as a 

missionary priest in ministries 

as varied as the 

Hispanic streets of San 

Francisco and the cloistered 

corridors of Rome. 

Although widely travelled 

he said he is delighted 

to have found 

a new home at historic 

St Charles Borromeo 

Catholic Church in Ryde 

and Our Lady Queen of 

Peace Catholic Church in 

Gladesville. 

He also has a strong 

 

Patrician College, being 

schooled by the Patri- 

 

years. 

“I really feel at home 

here, right from the very 

beginning I can say I love 

it here,” he said. 

Father Morgan is from 

the Catholic Order of 

Verbum Dei, a worldwide 

Catholic and evangelistic 

movement which aims to 

bring the Word Of God 

(Verbum Dei) into people’s 

lives and hearts. 

“My spirituality is to 

explore the readings at 

Mass, explore the scriptures 

in everyday life and 

to build community,” he 

said. 

“My aim is to support 

the wonderful community 

we already have here. 

“I know that we are living 

in particularly challenging 

times, where 

people work many long 

hours and that we do lose 

sight of what is beautiful 

and we are lacking what 

is spiritual and joyful.” 

Within hours of his arrival, 

Father Morgan has 

struck those around him 

with his sense of joy 

and love for others and 

the word will soon get 

 

Italian and Spanish. 

Father Morgan also has 

a Bachelor of Commerce 

from NSW University and 

worked as a trainee auditor 

for Price Waterhouse, 

but what local people 

may not know is that he 

became a priest through 

an unusual encounter on 

a train in 1986. 

“I had my calling at 

Villawood Railway Station, 

when I was 22 years 

old,” he said. 

“I suddenly felt I had 

been called to talk to a 

Laotian man, a migrant, 

a voice inside me urged 

me to talk to him, but 

I felt embarrassed to 

approach a complete 

stranger.” 

Father Morgan regretted 

not listening to his 

inner voice but as fate 

would have it, he met the 

man again, exchanged 

addresses and learned 

that his name was Teo 

Pham and that he lived 

in a half way house for 

disabled, traumatised 

veterans of the Vietnam 

War. 

“For the next six 

months I’d come by 

each week to teach them 

English,” he said. 

“From there I met the 

Verbum Dei missionaries 

and I just connected, 

I knew I had been called 

to be a missionary and 

my calling absolutely 

stunned my family.” 

Ordained in Majorca, 

Spain in 1995, this joyful 

priest has served in 

Colombia, Venezuela, 

Spain, The Philippines, 

Ireland, Germany, the 

United States of America 

and Italy. 

“I went on to become 

the Administrator General 

and Vice Superior 

(male congregation) of 

the Verbum Dei Fraternity,” 

he said. 

“In saying this, I’m 

not really such a great 

organiser, I more of a 

people person and I’m 

very much for using the 

talents we have here and 

inspiring people. 

“That fact that I’ve 

been a missionary overseas 

means that I also, 

especially, welcome being 

able to serve in this 

multicultural parish.” 

A constant presence 

in Father Morgan’s life 

is Jesus, whether present 

on the altar or in the 

hearts of those who seek 

love and seek to love 

others.

They recently hosted ‘Carols by Glowstick’, 

an event where they transformed 

their church into an indoor park with glow 

sticks for candles. 

The Top Ryde City based church was 

also an open house for families and 

members of the Ryde community who 

were all invited to sing along to the live

“Families, kids and adults, young and 

elderly alike; the idea was to create a 

space where everyone could get into 

the spirit of Christmas,” the team at C3 

Church said. 

Established since 1999, the team’s wish 

is to extend an invite to anyone and everyone 

who would like to come to church 

over December and Christmas. 

The C3 Church will hold Christmas services 

on Christmas Eve at 10am, 7pm 

and Christmas Day at 10am. 

They hold four services over a weekend, 

with kids programs as well as Full 

House Youth for high school kids.

struggling to meet medical 

expenses and for others it 

is rent and day to day living 

expenses.”

brave step to pay the 

power bills of needy families 

and the phrase ‘the 

power bill poor’ is now 

widely used across the 

welfare sector.

Anna Alessi encounters 

some of these families 

through her work with the 

St Vincent de Paul outreach 

van and concedes 

that the van’s 

clients no longer conform 

to the stereotype of the 

city destitute. 

“It is no longer just old 

men, it is families with little 

children, it really breaks 

your heart but we do the 

best we can to help them 

and even pack lunches so 

the children can still go to 

school.” 

Ms Alessi also meets parents 

whose self esteem 

 

been shattered by their inability 

to pay the bills. 

“Of course these parents 

are angry, there is 

so much resentment out 

there, especially because 

of the letters of demand 

they get from these large 

companies. 

“These demands really 

demoralise people when 

they know they can’t pos- 

 

they can even get angry 

at us but then they understand 

that we’re not like 

the large companies, we 

are here because we have 

love and compassion for 

others.” 

The Weekly Times has 

stood up for people struggling 

to pay power bills 

and has called out the 

greedy power companies 

whose bill hikes of 30 

to 40 per cent are all the 

more deplorable because 

 

false rhetoric of climate 

change. 

At the same time, this 

newspaper applauds charitable 

organisations like St 

Vincent de Paul and the 

generous people in our local 

community who donate 

to them. 

“It is sad that this is happening 

in our day and age 

and it shouldn’t be,” Anna 

Alessi said. 

“Here we are in the middle 

of summer and people 

are scared to turn on an 

air conditioner or a fan because 

they’re afraid of their 

power bill.”

Pros and cons of buying 

property in super 

TOO many people set up a SMSF to buy a property, who shouldn’t really be doing so. 

At the same time, there 

are many it really suits 

who just haven’t got their 

head around it yet...that 

buying in SMSF ticks both 

the tax minimisation and 

Asset Protection boxes. 

When your capacity to 

service loans is assessed, 

for lending outside Super, 

the bank takes into 

account at all your commitments 

and will NOT 

account for the income 

you’re forced to put in Super 

(your ‘SG’ or Superannuation 

Guarantee). 

However, when it comes 

to SMSF’s the banks can 

consider only your regular 

contributions into Super 

and the rental income the 

acquired asset will generate. 

I helped a dentist buy her 

surgery building last week 

and it actually wouldn’t 

have worked outside super, 

given her numerous 

other loans. 

Anyway, she’s much 

 

SMSF tax haven… great 

 

3 years with no Establishment 

Fee. The variance 

amongst the banks’ rates 

in this space is crazy. 

 

can’t give anything other 

than general advice. Plus I 

have chosen to specialise 

only in lending, so I’d get 

sued harder LOL. 

But what I can tell you 

is why only months ago, 

I actually purchased our 

 

SMSF! …if you’re interested… 

The purchase price was 

$1.52m. 

I snapped it up two 

weeks prior to the auction, 

just loved it, it used 

to be the CBA building 

on the Hume Highway in

Curves gym. 

The cheapest rate was 

 

only lend 65% though. 

But I didn’t have enough 

in Super for the rest. 

That’s why I had extended 

the settlement period 

to July 7, enough time for 

Tina and myself to each 

concessionally contribute 

$35k in each before June 

30, and then again on July 

2. 

The rest came from an 

 

and was non-concessionally 

contributed (we got 

no tax break for that bit). 

By the way, at the moment 

(watch this space 

though), Bankwest allow 

you to unlock the equity 

against your home at the 

same owner-occupied 

rate (the increase must 

be restricted to a dollar 

amount representing 50% 

of your home’s value). The 

other banks charge the 

higher investment rate for 

the cash out bit. It’s daylight 

second if you want to 

avoid cross-collateralising 

and want part of your future 

investment loan at 

owner-occupied rates.

and charged with attempting 

to sell North 

Korean missile components 

and expertise. 

The 59-year-old man

North Korea to Indonesia 

and Vietnam.

Ranch team raise over $15,000 for charity 

The amazing team at The Ranch Hotel North Ryde have been working away at the 

goodwill already raising over $15,000 for both the Movember and Leukaemia foundations 

this year. During December the team is supporting the Starlight Foundation and 

have set their sights on raising enough to grant a wish for a sick child. Last weekend 

the team donated $5,000 to the RotaryCarols on the Common and managed to raise

Detective Inspector Glyn Baker, Crime Manger, 

said readers can take simple precautions 

to ensure their property isn’t targeted by criminals. 

“Break-ins have an enormous emotional and

international Delray Rawlins were the toast of Tiger town 

last Sunday after Sydney Cricket Club brought home the 2017 

Kingsgrove Sports Twenty 20 Cup championship trophy.
