TWT 2017 Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival 

Queen Jane Meney and all Grand Finalists will star in 

this Saturday’s Festival Grand Parade in Eastwood. 

Queen Jane, pictured right, will ride in Terry Ryan’s 

famous multi award winning 1958 De Soto Firesweep 

convertible used by Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood 

stars accompanied by 2016 Festival Queen 

Rachel Monck. 

Grand Parade starts at 9.30am in Lakeside Road

community, Ryde Lantern Club’s

Sadly the Op Shop has to close 

from 4pm on Tuesday December 

12. 

Long serving volunteer Judy 

Harris said the shop’s lease expires 

on December 31 and can’t be 

renewed. 

“So many friendships have been 

made amongst members and our 

customers over those happy years 

when we have been able to raise 

over two and half million dollars 

for the Royal Institute for Deaf and 

Blind Children at North Rocks and 

it’s satellite sites,” said Judy. 

“We close at 4pm on December 

12 but must stop taking laybys 

from October 4 and stop taking 

donations of goods on November 

13,” she added. 

“Until closure there are lots of 

special buys and our 50 per cent 

 

will continue until the last day.”

Dominello grants $25 million for 

 

Ryde on Saturday by Ryde MP Victor Dominello to build 

a new commuter car park in Eastwood. 

Mr Dominello told The Weekly Times the $25 million Transport 

Access Plan Grant allows the City of Ryde Council to 

start work immediately on 300 new car spaces and to match 

the grant with council money to build shopper parking.

He said the grant has been earmarked 

for the council’s choice of 

either Glenn Street or Rowe Street 

but he ruled out Transport NSW’s 

proposal to build a commuter car 

park under Eastwood Oval. 

“I will not press ahead with any 

other option and that includes the 

Oval,” Mr Dominello said. 

“Given the Council’s resistance 

to the Oval, I’ll accept the will of 

the Council and the money we 

were going to spend on the Oval 

will now go to the Council’s preferred 

alternative. 

“I’ll leave the choice of the two 

sites to Council and now I just 

wish they’d hurry up and get on 

with it because everyone knows

$25 million would “put an end to 

the politics” that has dogged the 

Eastwood car park issue. 

“Here is the money, it is a lot of

I was born in Junee and grew up in 

Wantabadgery, which is 22 miles out of 

Wagga on the old Gundagai Road. 

I was the only child of Martin and Myra 

Chaney. My Father was a station hand on 

a sheep station, and my Mother ran the 

house. 

Back then Wantabadgery was a little 

village, we had one shop and the ladies 

would give their shopping lists to Joe 

Shinn, Joe was like our Postman. Joe 

would take the lists to town and get them 

 

ladies had ordered. 

We would only go into town about once 

a month, so it was great that we had Joe. 

The local school was a one room 

building, with one Teacher who taught 1st 

class to 6th class. 

I had four cousins on my Dad’s side 

who attend school with me, Arthur, Ken, 

Doug (we never called him Douglass) and 

Merle. I was very close to Merle, I was 

the youngest of us all and they called me 

Margie back then. I was always tagging 

along after them calling out “wait for me, 

wait for me, wait for me”. 

Mum decided one day that she had 

had enough of living in Wantabadgery 

and said to my Dad, “We are moving to 

Sydney, you can come with us or stay 

here”. Dad did come along after he sorted 

out his work. 

 

lived in one room until my parents bought 

a House of our own. 

I attended Darlinghurst Primary and 

then Dover Heights Girls High School . 

Back in Wantabadgery no one went onto 

High School as they went off to work on 

sheep stations, so moving to Sydney was 

a huge change. 

When I left school I worked for 

Mercantile Mutual Insurance, I stayed 

there until I was married. 

The last time I went back to 

Wantabadgery it was completely different, 

there were tarred streets, and the streets 

had names and the houses had numbers, it 

was no longer the village I remembered.

Protecting our 

water supplies 

Dear Sir, 

Whilst government has 

the ability to change laws 

when they don’t get their 

way in the courts it is often 

a backward step for the 

environment and the community. 

This seems the case with 

the Berejiklian government’s 

plans to weaken the laws 

providing for the environmental 

protection of NSW’s 

water catchments. 

A Supreme Court ruling 

recognised that expansion 

of the Springvale coal mine 

near Lithgow must be assessed 

using the pre development 

water quality as 

a baseline - not a baseline 

derived from the already 

polluting mine as the government 

had done in its approval 

of the mine’s expansion. 

The saline waters from 

 

the Coxs River, a major tributary 

of Warragamba Dam 

supplying the clean drinking 

lion 

residents. 

The government’s response 

to weaken the laws 

in response to the court decision 

is disappointing. 

It seems ludicrous for the 

NSW Planning Minister, 

our local member Anthony 

Roberts, to use the stunt 

of bringing a lump of coal 

into parliament to initiate 

the changes to the planning 

laws that protect precious 

drinking water. 

The current and future 

supply of clean drinking water 

for Sydney’s residents 

would seem a fundamental 

duty of a responsible government, 

especially a government 

that has pushed 

population growth in Sydney.

“Reader’s views cause nausea”

I have lived in the area for 

over 60 years and seen incredible 

change in regards to 

diversity and infrastructure, 

as you would expect in any 

society. Not all of it is good. 

The essence of Eastwood 

changed over the last 20 

 

totally ramped up in the last 

few years to the point where 

it is unrecognisable as being 

an Australian suburban 

shopping centre precinct. 

Last week I walked to the 

shopping centre for a particular 

item. 

It will be the last time. 

The only other vaguely 

Caucasian person I spotted 

was an elderly lady struggling 

in Woolworths. 

Every other person was 

Asian, every shop & business 

is Asian, every sign is Asian 

(occasionally with English 

subtitles). 

It is a battle to walk in the 

street as they do not observe 

the keep to the left 

etiquette, and many have no 

clue regarding spatial awareness 

strolling the streets 

four abreast holding hands, 

the spitting on the footpath 

is unbelievable, the shops 

are cluttered, the streets 

are cluttered, the side lanes 

stink, and the car park is appalling. 

The Eastwood Shopping 

Centre we grew up with and 

improvements over the early 

years which enhanced the 

area have disappeared under 

a mire of Asian culture that is 

only appealing to Asians. 

So be it, their plan worked, 

I’m out of here. 

I suggest Mark Newman 

try being a pedestrian, or a 

driver, at Eastwood and see 

how well your opinion of 

“making Australia a wonderful 

country” stands up.

Massive Chinese 

home ownership 

Dear Sir, 

Well, well it is has now 

 

now telling us that one in 

four new properties sold is 

bought by Chinese buyers. 

When one adds other 

Asians buying our properties 

 

What they don’t tell us is 

how many other properties in 

this country are being bought 

by local Asians on behalf of 

friends/relatives living overseas. 

This is not investment in our 

country. This is purely about 

greed and a sneaky possible 

back door entry in to eventually 

gaining Australian citizenship. 

Our governments and developers 

both local and Chinese 

have bent over backwards 

to let this happen and 

to accommodate the hoards 

 

To make them feel at home, 

as if they were back in Hong 

Kong or Beijing, sterile ugly 

unit towers are springing up 

everywhere destroying the 

Australia those of us who 

grew up in, remember so 

fondly. 

Our politicians should be 

charged with treason for allowing 

this to happen and for 

allowing them to buy up millions 

of hectares of our prime 

agricultural land and precious 

other assets. 

The Chinese have become 

wealthy buying resources and 

minerals fairly cheaply then 

 

 

dubious quality. 

A lot of cheap rubbish ends 

up polluting our country as

the deadly cheaper cladding 

used on an estimated thousand 

residential unit towers 

and buildings poses a deadly 

risk but our authorities have 

done nothing to address the

Our politicians obviously do 

not want to upset the Chinese 

or Asians in general. 

We or at least those 

amongst us who care and 

love this country and remember 

how wonderful it was 

should put pressure on our 

politicians to stand up for our 

country and to stop this madness.

amalgamation policy continues 

TONIGHT is a night of 

celebration for Hunters 

Hill. 

But, this battle is not 

over yet - not over yet. 

What has happened is 

this. 

The merger proposal 

between Ryde, Hunters 

Hill and Lane Cove has 

been won - that is what 

we are celebrating, it 

can’t happen. 

Unless the law is 

changed - the Lane 

Cove River divides 

Hunters Hill from Lane 

Cove and Lane Cove 

from Ryde. 

Under existing law, 

and I don’t see it being 

changed for a whole lot 

of very good reasons 

- that battle has been 

won. 

But can I alert everybody 

to the fact and that 

is this, the Liberal/National 

Party Government 

has not withdrawn its 

forced amalgamations 

policy and agenda, it is 

still there. 

 

because they were running 

into local government 

elections and they 

had painted themselves 

into a corner which they 

couldn’t get out of, so 

 

in court - their proposals 

were withdrawn. 

Some of the country 

ones in court were withdrawn 

in February and 

they were withdrawn because 

of National Party 

pressure on the Government, 

but the agenda is 

still there.

Laxale on this issue will now

The Weekly Times wins action on neighbourhood bee danger 


THE stinging bees that have plagued a North Ryde family look like being 

removed, thanks to The Weekly Times and Independent Ryde Councillor 

Roy Maggio. 

Last week’s edition of 

The Weekly Times featured 

the story of North 

Ryde’s Maria Kokkaris 

whose family and 

friends had been stung 

by bees from two next 

door bee hives. 

Councillor Maggio and 

The Weekly Times visited 

the Kokkaris’ home 

where he described the 

risk as “dangerous and 

unacceptable” and proposed 

mediation talks 

with the neighbours. 

The Weekly Times story 

– which Mrs Kokkaris 

posted online - attracted 

wider attention 

 

Department of Primary 

Industries visited her 

home last week. 

This week Maria had 

some good news for 

our readers. 

“Apparently the hives 

have been sold to an 

agricultural school and 

they will be moved within 

the next two weeks,” 

she said. 

“Now I am not getting 

excited until the 

day actually comes and 

the hives are no longer 

there, but I have slept 

better. 

“In saying that, thanks 

for your help and it was 

very reassuring knowing 

that you were there.” 

Councillor Maggio 

said the incident and 

the outcome proves the

and serious bee stings 

in her backyard. 

Resident Maria Kokkaris 

told The Weekly Times her 

sister-in-law had suffered 

a severe reaction to a bee 

sting and the family fear 

that a future sting could 

kill someone who has a 

life threatening reaction to 

stings, possibly a child.

have reported the incidents 

to Ryde City Council 

and to the Department 

of Primary Industries with

Now in its 32nd year and regarded one of 

Sydney’s largest outdoor family events, the 

Granny Smith Festival is expected to welcome 

up to 100,000 mums, dads, children and 

the young-at-heart to Eastwood on Saturday.

meeting for many months 

with members of Ryde 

Council’s events team to 

ensure a “best ever” result.

a traditional street 

parade, all-day entertainment, 

250 market stalls, 

international food fair, 

carnival rides, apple giveaways, 

a singing competition, 

plus a fabulous family 

concert and spectacular

With only weeks until the close of the postal survey on same sex marriage, two prominent local 

community leaders put the case for the NO and YES sides. 

The postal survey closes 

on Tuesday, November 7 

and asks “should the law 

be changed to allow same 

sex marriage - Yes or No 

?” 

The key part of the question 

is around the term 

“marriage”, regarded by 

many Christians as a Sacrament 

and more than a 

lawfully binding union of a 

couple.

Hunters Hill’s war on planning panels: 

Council demands Anthony Roberts face residents 

 

NSW Government’s law to remove planning powers from councillors and 

has challenged Planning Minister and Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts to

for development applications to 

go to the panels. 

“Introducing IHAPs, we will provide 

additional safeguards, expertise 

and transparency into planning 

decisions,” Ms Upton said. 

“We expect these panels to 

give communities and ratepayers 

greater certainty about planning 

decisions.”

Bahai celebrates a founder 

and his message of unity 

The Bahai Temple at 

Ingleside in Sydney’s 

north. 

The Bahai Faith will 

celebrate the 200th anniversary 

of the birth of 

its founder Baha’u’llah in 

West Ryde and Ingeside 

on the weekend of the 

21st and 22nd of October. 

The larger celebration

Bahai Temple in Ingleside 

on the 21 and 22nd of October 

from 6am to 8pm 

and the local celebration 

will be held at the West 

Ryde Community Centre 

in Anthony Road from 

7:30pm to 9:30pm.

George Ahadizadeh said 

the West Ryde event is 

free and will include light 

refreshments. 

“We commence the 

celebration with spiritual 

greetings and prayers 

and we will screen a video, 

which is also being 

shown at Bahai Temples 

all around the world,” he 

said. 

“It is open to all people, 

from any religion and any 

background.” 

There are around 150 

Bahai followers in the City 

of Ryde area and more 

than 20,000 across Australia. 

Their aim is to help others 

through compassion and 

charity and to teach the 

message of Baha’u’llah, 

who was born in Iran and 

is buried in Acre. 

“We are taught to be a 

helping hand to everyone,” 

he said. 

The Bahai way of compassion 

is based on the 

faith’s spirituality. 

“We have a concept of 

the spiritual body and the 

physical body we believe 

in an afterlife. 

“We compare the spiritual 

body (soul) and the 

physical body to a bird 

in cage and if you break 

open the cage you free 

the bird.” 

The ultimate goal of Bahai 

is the peace and unity 

of mankind and the faith 

honours prophets from 

Moses, to Jesus, to Buddha 

and Mohammed. 

“If you go into a Bahai 

Temple you will be surprised 

to see the Holy 

Book of your faith there. 

“This is also why our 

temples have nine doors, 

one door for each faith. 

“We compare our faith to 

a beautiful, which is beautiful 

because it has many 

diverse followers.” 

Likewise, Bahai places a 

great importance on both 

tolerance and forgiveness. 

“Bahai followers are persecuted 

in Iran but we are 

still there. 

“We work against all injustice 

and prejudice.”

A BRAVE Macquarie Park nurse who was diagnosed with breast cancer has shared her story with 

The Weekly Times in the hope it will encourage other women to seek a routine breast check up. 

Macquarie Park’s Belinda 

Marriott, 49, is a neonatal 

nurse who was diagnosed 

with breast cancer 

a year ago. 

She told The Weekly 

Times the cancer was 

detected shortly after 

she went for a check up 

alongside her mother and 

it was later revealed a 

lump on her breast was a 

breast cancer. 

After treatment, Belinda’s 

cancer has not 

spread but this brave 

nurse still faces a further 

four years of regular 

check ups. 

This is her story. 

“My mum had a lump 

removed many years ago, 

so I had made the decision 

to have regular mammograms. 

“I have very dense breasts, 

which can make it more dif- 

tected 

by a mammogram, 

so I placed a lot of importance 

on my GP doing regular 

examinations as well. 

“I’m so fortunate my 

cancer was picked up in 

the early stages”, Belinda 

said. 

After lumpectomy surgery 

to remove the cancer, 

 

radiotherapy treatment, 

Belinda is now recovering 

well and says she is passionate 

about encouraging 

all women to be more 

breast aware. 

“My younger cousin had 

a mammogram after I told 

her about my diagnosis 

and from that screening, 

found out that she had 

breast cancer too. 

“Something that has 

really struck me is how 

important it is to talk to 

people, to promote more 

awareness around breast 

cancer, how to detect it, 

and to encourage women 

to do a self-check, see 

their GP for a breast exam 

or to have a mammogram, 

it’s not that scary. 

“I’ve learnt that cancer 

doesn’t discriminate, it really 

can happen to anyone, 

so it’s better to take a proactive 

approach.” 

Statistics reveal that one 

in eight Australian women 

will be diagnosed with 

breast cancer by the time 

they turn 85 . 

The latest data from the 

Cancer Institute of New 

South Wales shows that 

in the Northern Sydney region, 

more than 700 people 

were diagnosed with 

breast cancer in a single 

year , while new research 

released this month by 

the Australian Institute of 

Health and Welfare (AIHW) 

estimates that there will 

be more than 17,500 new 

cases of breast cancer in 

Australian women in 2017, 

up from more than 15,900 

in 2013 . 

October is now designated 

Breast Cancer 

Awareness Month and Belinda 

deliberately chose to 

reveal her story to coincide 

with this important event. 

“If we only get a few 

readers of The Weekly 

Times to go for a check 

up, we’ve achieved something 

and who knows, we 

might even save a life,” 

she said. 

As more people become 

aware of the importance of 

breast cancer check ups, 

the condition is now receiving 

more support from 

governments and health 

insurers. 

The HCF’s Macquarie 

Centre Branch Manager, 

Carmen Santucci, said her 

fund is proud to cover a 

range of breast cancer related 

services. 

“More than 6,300 HCF 

members have claimed for 

services relating to breast 

 

years, including 186 members 

from the Macquarie 

Park area. 

Belinda is one of these 

members and said having 

private health insurance 

is an important part of her 

recovery. 

“I was able to choose 

my specialist surgeon and 

I received much faster 

treatment,” she said.

Explosive situation defused 

at Hunters Hill Town Hall 

A potentially explosive situation was defused at Hunters Hill Town Hall - not in the council 

chamber but in the museum next door. 

Hunters Hill Historical 

Society, which runs 

the museum, decided 

to check its extensive 

collection of artefacts 

for any possibly hazardous 

objects. 

What transpired led 

to swift action by police 

at Gladesville and 

the Army. 

The Society turned 

up a colonial-era gun, 

in its original case, dating 

back to the mid to 

late-1800s. 

The English-made 

powder and ball percussion 

revolver, similar 

to the one used by 

bushranger Ben Hall, 

was handed in to the 

police for safe-keeping. 

Because the weapon 

can no longer be kept 

at the museum, the 

Society is trying to establish 

its provenance 

and value to see if it is 

of interest to a licensed 

collector. 

Also located were 

three anti-aircraft 

shells from the Second 

World War and several 

other non-military bullets 

from around the 

early 1900s. 

Because of the potential 

danger, Army 

munitions experts were 

alerted. 

They examined the 

armaments at the museum. 

Three projectiles were 

cleared but the others 

were taken away to 

be destroyed because 

there was a possibility 

they could still be live. 

Society President 

 

that, because safety 

was an over-riding 

concern, the Society 

felt it should do the 

right thing and get the 

items checked out. 

He commented: “We 

would not like to have 

been held responsible 

for blowing the Town 

Hall sky-high! 

Fortunately, all has 

been resolved satisfactorily. 

The Society would 

like to thank the police 

and the Army for their 

prompt response.” 

The museum, now 

hazard-free, is open to 

the public weekdays 

from 10am to 12 noon.

50 year reunion for Ryde High School graduates 

BACK in the early 1960s the high school system 

changed in NSW when the Wyndham Scheme was introduced. 

The ‘new’ era of education was

students who enrolled in 1962 

at the co-educational Ryde High 

School and graduated in 1967 

were the best!” says Paul Fredrickson, 

one of those students 

and a member of a reunion organising 

committee. 

“Over ten years ago a small 

group of ex-students put together 

a list of over 200 names 

 

who attended at Ryde High,” 

said Paul. 

“They successfully made 

contact with 140 of those 

students. That led to a successful 

40th reunion in 

2007,” Paul said. 

“We are continuing our 

search for more of those exstudents 

as we approach the 

anniversary of our graduation 

50 years ago. We are 

now all aged between 67 

and 69 years old but we all 

still like to party”. 

The committee of ex-students 

has organised the 50th 

Reunion for Saturday night 

November 11 at North Ryde. 

The Grand gathering of ex- 

Ryde High School students, 

who started school in 1962, 

will celebrate 50 years since

FOUR of Ryde Athletics Centre’s most talented all-rounders recently competed at the 

NSW All Schools Multi Event Championships - and each booked a spot in the NSW 

team for the 2018 Australian National Championships.

five points off the State title 

when she snared a silver 

medal in the 14-15yrs 

age group while Sophie, 

competing in the 12-13yrs 

division, rounded out the 

full set of medals for Ryde 

when she secured her third 

place and a bronze medal. 

A jubilant Alana achieved 

enough points to obtain a 

national qualifier and join 

the medallists in the NSW 

team.

Tigers to play home NRL games 

in Auckland and Tamworth 

WESTS Tigers rugby league 

team will participate in a special 

double header in New 

Zealand in 2018. 

As a part of the exciting initiative, 

the Tigers will be taking one home 

game to Auckland next season with 

the club to lock horns with premiers 

Melbourne Storm across the Tasman. 

The Tigers will join the New Zealand 

Warriors as the home teams for 

this special event at Mt Smart Stadium 

in Auckland. 

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe 

said the club took its role in growing 

the game seriously and looked forward 

to being a part of this exciting 

NRL initiative. 

“The club is proud to be involved 

 

work with the NRL and the Warriors 

to grow the game,” said Pascoe. 

“This double header is set to be a 

great day out for the members and 

fans of all four teams and we look 

forward to seeing plenty of Wests Tigers 

support in the stands. 

“As a club we have strong links to
