Closure for Ryde
Lantern Op Shop
After 37 years serving the local
community, Ryde Lantern Club’s
Op Shop in Church Street Ryde
will close its doors at the end of
the year.
Sadly the Op Shop has to close
from 4pm on Tuesday December
12.
Long serving volunteer Judy
Harris said the shop’s lease expires
on December 31 and can’t be
renewed.
“So many friendships have been
made amongst members and our
customers over those happy years
when we have been able to raise
over two and half million dollars
for the Royal Institute for Deaf and
Blind Children at North Rocks and
it’s satellite sites,” said Judy.
“We close at 4pm on December
12 but must stop taking laybys
from October 4 and stop taking
donations of goods on November
13,” she added.
“Until closure there are lots of
special buys and our 50 per cent

will continue until the last day.”
He said the grant has been earmarked
for the council’s choice of
either Glenn Street or Rowe Street
but he ruled out Transport NSW’s
proposal to build a commuter car
park under Eastwood Oval.
“I will not press ahead with any
other option and that includes the
Oval,” Mr Dominello said.
“Given the Council’s resistance
to the Oval, I’ll accept the will of
the Council and the money we
were going to spend on the Oval
will now go to the Council’s preferred
Mr Dominello said he hoped the
$25 million would “put an end to
the politics” that has dogged the
Eastwood car park issue.
“Here is the money, it is a lot of
money which our government has
been able to provide because our
position.”
The Ryde MP said he expects
the car park to be completely
within one to three years and

be installed at Rowe Street and
West Parade within two to three
months.
“This is not the Taj Mahal and
the Council should hurry up and
build this.”
Born 1933
I was born in Junee and grew up in
Wantabadgery, which is 22 miles out of
Wagga on the old Gundagai Road.
I was the only child of Martin and Myra
Chaney. My Father was a station hand on
a sheep station, and my Mother ran the
house.
Back then Wantabadgery was a little
village, we had one shop and the ladies
would give their shopping lists to Joe
Shinn, Joe was like our Postman. Joe
would take the lists to town and get them

ladies had ordered.
We would only go into town about once
a month, so it was great that we had Joe.
The local school was a one room
building, with one Teacher who taught 1st
class to 6th class.
I had four cousins on my Dad’s side
who attend school with me, Arthur, Ken,
Doug (we never called him Douglass) and
Merle. I was very close to Merle, I was
the youngest of us all and they called me
Margie back then. I was always tagging
along after them calling out “wait for me,
wait for me, wait for me”.
Mum decided one day that she had
had enough of living in Wantabadgery
and said to my Dad, “We are moving to
Sydney, you can come with us or stay
here”. Dad did come along after he sorted
out his work.

lived in one room until my parents bought
a House of our own.
I attended Darlinghurst Primary and
then Dover Heights Girls High School .
Back in Wantabadgery no one went onto
High School as they went off to work on
sheep stations, so moving to Sydney was
a huge change.
When I left school I worked for
Mercantile Mutual Insurance, I stayed
there until I was married.
The last time I went back to
Wantabadgery it was completely different,
there were tarred streets, and the streets
had names and the houses had numbers, it
was no longer the village I remembered.
Protecting our
water supplies
Dear Sir,
Whilst government has
the ability to change laws
when they don’t get their
way in the courts it is often
a backward step for the
environment and the community.
This seems the case with
the Berejiklian government’s
plans to weaken the laws
providing for the environmental
protection of NSW’s
water catchments.
A Supreme Court ruling
recognised that expansion
of the Springvale coal mine
near Lithgow must be assessed
using the pre development
water quality as
a baseline - not a baseline
derived from the already
polluting mine as the government
had done in its approval
of the mine’s expansion.
The saline waters from

the Coxs River, a major tributary
of Warragamba Dam
supplying the clean drinking
lion
residents.
The government’s response
to weaken the laws
in response to the court decision
is disappointing.
It seems ludicrous for the
NSW Planning Minister,
our local member Anthony
Roberts, to use the stunt
of bringing a lump of coal
into parliament to initiate
the changes to the planning
laws that protect precious
drinking water.
The current and future
supply of clean drinking water
for Sydney’s residents
would seem a fundamental
duty of a responsible government,
especially a government
that has pushed
population growth in Sydney.
I would like to reply to
Mark Newman’s letter
“Reader’s views cause nausea”
11/10/17.
I have lived in the area for
over 60 years and seen incredible
change in regards to
diversity and infrastructure,
as you would expect in any
society. Not all of it is good.
The essence of Eastwood
changed over the last 20

totally ramped up in the last
few years to the point where
it is unrecognisable as being
an Australian suburban
shopping centre precinct.
Last week I walked to the
shopping centre for a particular
item.
It will be the last time.
The only other vaguely
Caucasian person I spotted
was an elderly lady struggling
in Woolworths.
Every other person was
Asian, every shop & business
is Asian, every sign is Asian
(occasionally with English
subtitles).
It is a battle to walk in the
street as they do not observe
the keep to the left
etiquette, and many have no
clue regarding spatial awareness
strolling the streets
four abreast holding hands,
the spitting on the footpath
is unbelievable, the shops
are cluttered, the streets
are cluttered, the side lanes
stink, and the car park is appalling.
The Eastwood Shopping
Centre we grew up with and
improvements over the early
years which enhanced the
area have disappeared under
a mire of Asian culture that is
only appealing to Asians.
So be it, their plan worked,
I’m out of here.
I suggest Mark Newman
try being a pedestrian, or a
driver, at Eastwood and see
how well your opinion of
“making Australia a wonderful
country” stands up.
Tragic human
toll of war
Dear Sir,
I’d like to acknowledge
our local newspaper, The
Weekly Times, for its most
recent contribution to our
heritage and history.
I read with great interest
your compelling article,
‘Massacre in the mud’
(TWT, 11/10/17 page 7).
Sadly, it is absolutely
true to say that this was
the “war to end all wars”.
But here we are in 2017,
still involved globally in
cious
men, women and
children mostly in the
name of religion but often
due to intergenerational
Massive Chinese
home ownership
Dear Sir,
Well, well it is has now

now telling us that one in
four new properties sold is
bought by Chinese buyers.
When one adds other
Asians buying our properties

What they don’t tell us is
how many other properties in
this country are being bought
by local Asians on behalf of
friends/relatives living overseas.
This is not investment in our
country. This is purely about
greed and a sneaky possible
back door entry in to eventually
gaining Australian citizenship.
Our governments and developers
both local and Chinese
have bent over backwards
to let this happen and
to accommodate the hoards

To make them feel at home,
as if they were back in Hong
Kong or Beijing, sterile ugly
unit towers are springing up
everywhere destroying the
Australia those of us who
grew up in, remember so
fondly.
Our politicians should be
charged with treason for allowing
this to happen and for
allowing them to buy up millions
of hectares of our prime
agricultural land and precious
other assets.
The Chinese have become
wealthy buying resources and
minerals fairly cheaply then

dubious quality.
A lot of cheap rubbish ends
up polluting our country as

Other products such as
the deadly cheaper cladding
used on an estimated thousand
residential unit towers
and buildings poses a deadly
risk but our authorities have
done nothing to address the
issue.
Our politicians obviously do
not want to upset the Chinese
or Asians in general.
We or at least those
amongst us who care and
love this country and remember
how wonderful it was
should put pressure on our
politicians to stand up for our
country and to stop this madness.
Hunters Hill Guest Column
NSW Government’s forced
amalgamation policy continues
TONIGHT is a night of
celebration for Hunters
Hill.
But, this battle is not
over yet - not over yet.
What has happened is
this.
The merger proposal
between Ryde, Hunters
Hill and Lane Cove has
been won - that is what
we are celebrating, it
can’t happen.
Unless the law is
changed - the Lane
Cove River divides
Hunters Hill from Lane
Cove and Lane Cove
from Ryde.
Under existing law,
and I don’t see it being
changed for a whole lot
of very good reasons
- that battle has been
won.
But can I alert everybody
to the fact and that
is this, the Liberal/National
Party Government
has not withdrawn its
forced amalgamations
policy and agenda, it is
still there.

because they were running
into local government
elections and they
had painted themselves
into a corner which they
couldn’t get out of, so

in court - their proposals
were withdrawn.
Some of the country
ones in court were withdrawn
in February and
they were withdrawn because
of National Party
pressure on the Government,
but the agenda is
still there.
* * *
PEOPLE have been
asking me - Phil, what
could happen with Ryde
and Hunters Hill in the
future, could they come
back with another proposal?
- yes legally they
could, they could.
to be controlled or manipulated
by Asia or worse to one
day become another cheap,
dirty, overcrowded and polluted
Asian country.
TONY IKONOMOU
Hunters Hill
State funding for
Eastwood carpark
Dear Sir,
It is a pleasing development
that the state member
for Ryde, Victor Dominello,
has announced $25 million
funding to Ryde Council for
the development of a commuter
car parking solution in
Eastwood.
Mr Dominello has been

in Eastwood whilst Jerome
Laxale has fought against him
the whole way.
The complete lack of leadership
from Mayor Jerome
Laxale on this issue will now
be put to the test.

number 1 issue for Eastwood
residents and businesses and
yet all we hear is self-serving
whining and political games
from Mr Laxale.
He cynically undermined
the Rowe Street East car
parking proposal. He actively
worked to oppose the Lower
oval all weather playing surface
proposal.
He sabotaged the upper
oval all weather playground
To The POINT
With
PHIL JENKYN
We could be facing
another proposal in two
months, three months or
if they win the next election
- so the battle is not
over.
You may ask me the
question, oh are they really
going to come back
and go through the pain
again - well all I can say
is their behaviour in the
last two years has not
been rational and I have
said in public, and as a
lawyer I very rarely ever
say this, they have been
deceitful and dishonest
in the public domain and
that is unpardonable
from my point of view -
totally unpardonable.
So, the policy still exists.
* * *
SECONDLY, what is
happening just if I can
cut right to the chase,
the Liberal Party for the

candidates in Hunters
Hill’s 156-year history.
They were selected by

local Liberal Party - by

put your nomination into

The fact is this - that
if the Liberal Party wins
the local government
election in Hunters Hill
and gets control of
Hunters Hill Council,
and if they get control
of Ryde Council because
they have endorsed
candidates in
Ryde, then you will
have a situation where
those councillors might
proposal. And with two terms
of Mayor has done a big fat

parking issues in Eastwood.
Well now Mayor Laxale, let’s
see what you’ve got. When
will you solve this issue that
you have said is urgent?
all happily get together
one day and say ‘Do we
all think bigger is better,
why don’t we voluntarily
amalgamate’. Nothing is
stopping them from doing
that.
What is happening
now is this - you have
got a local government
election. It is a very important
election, probably
the most important
one I think that there has
been in our history.
If it goes the wrong
way, and the community
loses control over our
council and it becomes
dominated by a political
party, then we could

not happen.
However today is a
day of celebration - I just
thought I would let you
know what the realities
of life are - but today we
are entitled to celebrate
our greatest victory.
The Weekly Times wins action on neighbourhood bee danger
8 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 11 October, 2017
THE stinging bees that have plagued a North Ryde family look like being
removed, thanks to The Weekly Times and Independent Ryde Councillor
Roy Maggio.
Last week’s edition of
The Weekly Times featured
the story of North
Ryde’s Maria Kokkaris
whose family and
friends had been stung
by bees from two next
door bee hives.
Councillor Maggio and
The Weekly Times visited
the Kokkaris’ home
where he described the
risk as “dangerous and
unacceptable” and proposed
mediation talks
with the neighbours.
The Weekly Times story
– which Mrs Kokkaris
posted online - attracted
wider attention

Department of Primary
Industries visited her
home last week.
This week Maria had
some good news for
our readers.
“Apparently the hives
have been sold to an
agricultural school and
they will be moved within
the next two weeks,”
she said.
“Now I am not getting
excited until the
day actually comes and
the hives are no longer
there, but I have slept
better.
“In saying that, thanks
for your help and it was
very reassuring knowing
that you were there.”
Councillor Maggio
said the incident and
the outcome proves the

independent The Weekly
Times working with
an active, independent
councillor.
“I’m delighted that,
working together, we
look like achieving another
successful outcome
for a local family,”
he said.
“I’d hate to think of the
consequences if someone
with a severe reaction
to bee stings was
stung and we didn’t
act.”
There goes another one ! Maria Kokkaris and Ryde Clr Roy Maggio check out the stinging bees in her backyard. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO
Next door bees sting a North Ryde family
A North Ryde family
fears that neighbouring
bee hives could lead to a
fatality after two recent
and serious bee stings
in her backyard.
Resident Maria Kokkaris
told The Weekly Times her
sister-in-law had suffered
a severe reaction to a bee
sting and the family fear
that a future sting could
kill someone who has a
life threatening reaction to
stings, possibly a child.
The Truscott Street family
have reported the incidents
to Ryde City Council
and to the Department
of Primary Industries with
OPEN
7 DAYS
a plea to have the neighbouring
bee hive removed
– without success – and
have now appealed to The
Weekly Times for action.
Beekeeping is not illegal

proof the stings were from
next door’s bees but the
Kokkaris family want the
issue dealt with quickly.
“The three hives were
put in last December I am
still waiting for someone
to deal with the bee situation
with our neighbours
and their hives, we are at
our wits end,” Ms Kokkaris
said.
The Mayor of Ryde has called on Premier Gladys
Berejiklian to fund schools, roads and other local
infrastructure linked to the housing redevelopment
at former Putt Putt site in Melrose Park.
The proposed Hello-
Melrose development
has more than a thousand
units and could
be up to ten stories
high.
It is being advertised
as close to schools
and shopping at Meadowbank
but Mayor Jerome
Laxale has questioned
why the City of
Ryde will provide the
local amenities for the
development but the
City of Parramatta will
grab the cash for it.
“Their own promotion
material has arrows
pointing to Ryde,
they don’t say shop in
Parramatta because
they are directing everyone
who lives their to
Ryde, including to our
schools,” Mayor Laxale
said
“Although this development
is in the City
of Parramatta, the City

raised concern about
it and about the loss of
industrial land and the
employment industrial
land generates.
“Of course the developer
is under no
obligation to spend a
cent in Ryde but I believe
Premier Gladys
Berejiklian and Ryde
MP Victor Dominello
should be spending
money here to provide
the infrastructure we
need.”
Mayor Laxale warned
that this development
could be the “tip of a
much larger iceberg”
that could see thousands
of more units
come to Melrose Park.
Epping Eastwood Lions present cheque to Ryde Hospital
EPPING Eastwood Lions Club donated $49,238 to Ryde Hospital
last Thursday to upgrade three anaesthetic machines.
The cheque was presented
by Epping Eastwood
Lions Club President
“A big thank you to Epping
Eastwood Lions for
this cheque which will upgrade
the three machines
and will put Ryde Hospital
up with the best hospitals
in NSW,” Karen Jones
said.
said the donation meant
the machines – used to
deliver anaesthetic gases,
and monitor a patient’s vital
signs during an operation
– could be upgraded
ahead of schedule.
“This donation, like others
we are lucky to receive,
allows us to stretch our
budget further, meaning

from improvements to the
hospital more quickly,” Mr
Noone said.
Epping Eastwood Lions
Club immediate past president
Lynn Campbell said
much of the money had
been raised at a trivia night
held earlier this year.
“The attachment between
Ryde Hospital, the
local community and our
club is very strong,” she
said.
“It is a real pleasure for us
to be able to contribute to
the vital work of Ryde Hospital
by providing tangible
help, this time in the form
of cash to upgrade important
equipment.”
“I’d like to thank everyone
who supports Lions, and
supported our trivia night,
because they all played a
role in making Ryde Hospital
an even better asset for
our community.”
The event was attended
North Ryde’s Begin
Bright is taking enrolments
for its school readiness
and tutoring services
aimed at giving children
the best possible start in
life.
“We’re taking enrolments
all year round depending
on availability,”
Begin Bright Centre Manager
Adibeh Sayed said.
“What sets us apart from
other school readiness
and ttoring service providers
is that all our teach-

BOSTES accredited.”
Parents are encouraged
to visit the centre at 13A

more about the learning
opportunities available for
children from two to 13.
“We look forward to
meeting parents and to
speaking with them about
what they want to focus
on,” Ms Sayed.
“Our school readiness
program covers the gap
between early childhood
and primary school.
“Everything we do for
these younger children is
learning through play and
we believe that learning
should be fun and exciting
using both games and traditional
methods.
“In this way we prepare
children for primary
school, making sure they
can recognise letters and
numbers as well as developing
their skills and
awareness.
“For example, we learn
the letter “G” as we learn
about the animal the Gorilla
and we have fun discovering
the life of a gorilla
in the jungle.
“If the child is a visual
learner we’ll use a visual
stimulus but we’ll also
work with the child to develop
their motor skills,
such as how to hold a pen
properly.”
Eastwood Chamber debates parking
Parents can have fun
too.
“With the two year old’s
we get the parents involved
and involve them
in the learning sessions
and we play together,” Ms
Sayed said.
“Its not only a good
learning experience, it is
a good bonding experience.”
The tutoring involves
one on one support as
well as group sessions.
“Here we work on the
accredited Board of Studies
syllabus and we speak
with the parents about
what they want us to focus
on and of course we
acknowledge that not
every student can be up
to par in literacy and numeracy.”
‘‘An important part of
what we do is building
to
is to helping a child to
become happier, smarter

“By speaking with parents
we can assess what
level their child is at.”
YES or NO?
Wednesday 18 October, 2017 THE WEEKLY TIMES 11
Two key local campaigners from
both camps state their case
With only weeks until the close of the postal survey on same sex marriage, two prominent local
community leaders put the case for the NO and YES sides.
The postal survey closes
on Tuesday, November 7
and asks “should the law
be changed to allow same
sex marriage - Yes or No
?”
The key part of the question
is around the term
“marriage”, regarded by
many Christians as a Sacrament
and more than a
lawfully binding union of a
couple.
Prime Minister Malcolm

NO victory would not see
the issue debated in Federal
Parliament but a majority
YES outcome will
trigger further debate and
MPs are then expected
to agree to a conscience
vote on the issue.
YES advocates believe
same-sex couples should
not face any form of discrimination
because of
their sexuality and the
matter is a matter of basc
human rights, equality and
principle.
A major concern among
NO advocates is that religious
ministers may be
subject to anti-discrimination
penalties for refusing
to marry same sex couples.
Federal member for
North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman
puts the case for
a YES reponse to the survey,
while former Epping
state MP Greg Smith puts
his case for the NO side.
Mr Zimmerman supports
the YES campaign vote
and hopes the vote will
send a message of hope
to other gay people that
they can be proud of who
they are.
“Some have said to me
this is not an issue I need

person’s sexuality is irrelevant
in this day and age,”
he said in a speech in federal
parliament.
“But too many people
are prepared topeddle
prejudice.
“Our laws still deny access
to marriage, our society’s
ultimate expression
of love andcommitment.
“Young gay men and
women are more likely

other mental healthissues;
they are more likely to be
bullied at school.
”More are likely to attempt
to take their own
lives and tragically some
will succeed.
“Coming out remains
hard for many people and
believe me, I know what
that’s like.
“A person’s sexuality is
not a choice or a preference,
it is as innate asthe
colour of their skin.”
“As a liberal I regard economic
freedoms as the inseparable
twin of personal
liberty.”
Mr Smith said the ‘No’
case pressed by the Coalition
for Marriage warns
survey respondents of the
fact that none of the proposed
bills to amend the
Marriage Act, to allow two
people of the same sex to
marry, contain protections
for freedom of religion and
freedom of expression for
persons other than priests,
ministers and authorised
marriage celebrants.
“So, if you choose ‘Yes’
you give their Parliamentary
supporters a free kick
to ignore important rights
which parents and all of us
currently enjoy,” he said.
“I agree with the Coalition
for Marriage who urge
that there is now less than
one month to go in the
postal plebiscite.
“If you are concerned
about radical gay sex and
gender classes becoming
widespread and compulsory
in schools, you must
choose ‘No’.
“If you are concerned
dom
of speech you must
choose ‘No’.
“If you are concerned
about protecting religious
freedom you must choose
‘No’.”
12 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 18 October, 2017
Hunters Hill’s war on planning panels:
Council demands Anthony Roberts face residents

NSW Government’s law to remove planning powers from councillors and
has challenged Planning Minister and Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts to
front a council meeting and face the wrath of the local community.
The new law will come
into force from March
next year and hands
planning powers for de-

million dollars to coun-
-

will go to panels chaired
by Mr Roberts’ appointees
and served by two
government backed experts
and a sole community
voice.
The new law will also
give the panels the
right to seize control of
development applications
where ten or more
residents object to it and

community cash and
other “incentives” as
part of voluntary planning
agreements.
Hunters Hill Council
was told last Monday
night that heritage will
only be considered if
the heritage building is
targeted for demolition
and the panels also control
the development of
licenced premises and
entertainment venues.
The planning panels
will control major developments
in Gladesville
as well as proposed
council developments -
such as the Ryde Civic
Centre - and major government/civic/private
partnerships such as
the proposed commuter
carpark at Eastwood
Oval.
Hunters Hill Council
has sent a ten point letter
of objection to Mr
Roberts with council-

to slam the new laws
as the greatest threat to
the heritage municipality
since the failed forced
mergers.
Councillor Zac Miles
did not vote in favour
of the ten point objection
and stressed that
the new law had been
developed to stop corruption.
“This is a law passed
by both houses of NSW
Parliament on recommendations
arising from
the ICAC,” Cr Miles said.
Deputy Mayor Ross
Williams - who drafted
the ten point objection
- rubbished Clr Miles
claim.
“They talk about corruption,
they talk about
ICAC but there’s never
been a history of corruption
here and you don’t
persecute Hunters Hill
on this basis,” the Deputy
Mayor said.
“This law is reprehensive
and this is the most

Hill has even faced
“It is a law that is politically
driven by the Minister.
“We only just fought

Hunters Hill’s democracy
and this is equally
devastating.
Councillor Justine
McLaughlin also denounced
the new law.
“It doesn’t reduce corruption,
it internalises it,”
Clr McLaughlin said.
hensible
that councillors
elected to protect
Hunters Hill should be
completely shut out of
planning decisions and
the cost shifting of these
panels back on ratepayers
is incomprehensible
arrogance.”
Save Hunters Hill Municipality
spokesman
Phil Jenkyn backed Clr
McLaughlin.
ish
under this Act because
the planning panel
members appointed
by the Planning Minister
will be consultants for
property developers and
consultants for the government,”
he said.
“Councillors don’t
bring corruption, they
bring an extra dimemsion
to the planning
process because they
actually live here and
can see the impact of a
proposed development
on the municipality, as
a whole, including roads

Newly elected Councillor
Jim Sanderson said

on his hands.
“We can’t submit ourselves
to this legislation
and we can’t prepare
for the worst and so we
tion,
which is wrong.”
The ten point objection
passed by the council
calls on Mr Roberts to
attend a council meeting
and explain how the
new panels will improve
planning outcomes for
Hunters Hill, protect
conservation areas and
replace planning controls
that have protected
Hunters Hill for the last
156 years.
Mr Roberts will also
be grilled on why the
new law was “rushed
through” NSW Parliament
within days of the
forced mergers being
scrapped and how the
panels will be accountable
to Hunters Hill ratepayers.
Hunters Hill has also
called on the this year’s
NSW Local Government
Conference in Sydney to
vote to revoke the law.
In place of ads in this
newspaper calling for
interested people to apply
for jobs as community
representatives on
the panels, councillors
voted to conduct an education
campaign to “inform
the community of
changes” in the planning
determination process.
Of particular concern
to councillors is restrictions
of community
panel members having a
“vested interest” in planning
decisions.
“The panel chairman is
a government appointee,
the two experts on
the panel are pre-selected
by the government
and the community representative
can’t have a
vested interest, such as
being a member of the
Hunters Hill Trust,” Deputy
Mayor Williams said.
“What would four bureaucrats
know about
responsible planning in
Hunters Hill?
“The community is fed
up and we (councillors)
must now ensure that
our community is protected
and our heritage
is protected.”
Anthony Roberts rejects Hunters Hill’s claims
Lane Cove MP and Planning
Minister Anthony Roberts has
rejected claims made by Hunters
Hill Council that the new,
mandatory planning panels
would strip councillors of existing
planning and heritage protection
powers.
Hunters Hill Council voted last
Monday to oppose the mandatory
panels and call Mr Roberts to
a council meeting to explain why
the new Independent Hearing and
Assessment Panels - which will
become mandatory on all Sydney
councils from March - will stop
councillors determining development
applications of more than

The new laws to do not prevent
councillors or residents lodging an
objection or a supporting statement
for any local development
before the panel and Mr Roberts
further stressed that Hunters Hill

process most applications for individual
houses or alterations to
existing houses.
He said Hunters Hill and other
councils will also retain the right
to determine development controls.
“By making IHAPs mandatory,
local councils will be able to focus
on providing strategic plans and
development controls for their local
areas,” Mr Roberts said.
“The IHAPs have become mandatory
for all councils in Sydney
to guard against corruption and
lead to better local planning decisions.
“It is essential the Government
has a transparent and accountable
process in place when assessing
Development Applications of

or developer, or when they are of a
sensitive nature.
“Mandatory IHAPs will bring expertise,
transparency and integrity
to the assessment of Development
Applications at the local level.”
Mr Roberts refuted claims by
Hunters Hill Councillor Justine
McLoughlin that the new panels
will not eliminate corruption but
internalise it.
“The panel members themselves
will be subject to statutory rules
such as a compulsory code of
conduct and operational procedures
for the panels.”
Local Government, Gabrielle
Upton assured the community the
Government will set clear criteria
for development applications to
go to the panels.
“Introducing IHAPs, we will provide
additional safeguards, expertise
and transparency into planning
decisions,” Ms Upton said.
“We expect these panels to
give communities and ratepayers
greater certainty about planning
decisions.”
recession - the loss of tissue along the
gum line. It can occur as a result of periodontal
disease (gingivitis, periodontitis),
the natural ageing process or abrasive
habits when it comes to brushing
teeth.
Gum recession can lead to tooth loss
on rare occasions but usually the main
issue is problem with the wear, bite and
sensitivity.
People who are more susceptible have
“thin Biotype”: the housing of bone and
gum tissue becomes thin and delicate
and therefore non resistant to a forceful
bite or heavy tooth brushing.
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique
Talented Paris earns Young Composer award
PRODIGIOUS talent Paris Francis was the winner of Ryde Hunters Hill Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composer award - impressing keen judges at last Sunday’s Inspiring
Creativity concert at North Ryde School of Arts Community Hall in Cox’s Road North Ryde. Sixteen-year-old year old Paris performed to a full house and entertained all with

the Young Composer award. Highly commended for his composition was Nicholas D’Silva for his work “The Angel’s Descent”. Nicholas was unable to attend the concert with
his award accepted by his sister.
New Lane Cove Mayor Pam Palmer answers our readers’ questions
Lane Cove’s new
Mayor Pam Palmer

depth interview with
The Weekly Times.
Mayor Palmer answers
our readers’
questions.
Congratulations on
-

Mayor. What do you want
to bring to the role ?
Thank you for those kind
words. Firstly, as an independent
and not a member
of any political party,
I am in a great position
to promote a good working
relationship amongst
all the councillors who do
share a range of political
views, just as our community
does. I believe we can
achieve so much more
when we all work together.
Secondly, because I already
have the experience
of two previous terms
on Council, I believe we
won’t be wasting any
time before implementing
the improvements that
residents expect and deserve.
-

about ?
Our biggest project in
dollar terms is the recently
commenced construction
of a new parkland in
the heart of Lane Cove
Village with a 500-space
carpark below ground
and incorporating an Aldi
and a Coles supermarket.
Meanwhile, we are creating
new parks and building
new communtiy spaces
and childcare centres
in neighbourhoods where
housing densities have
recently increased. Feedback
from residents has
been very positive so far.
What do you see as the
ing
Lane Cove ?
All suburbs of Sydney
are facing the challenge
of State Government-imposed
housing and employment
growth targets.
Lane Cove can meet the
targets but can we do so
while retaining our local
identity? It is important
to retain our heritage, our
bushland and our natural
foreshores... our liveability!
That’s the challenge.
How do you intend to
engage with ratepayers,
personally and how open
nity
ideas ?
I love new community
ideas! I’m always asking
residents to tell us what
they love - and what they
don’t like - so we can do
it better. And I’m a great
believer in diversity as a
driver of new ideas, both
in terms of cultural diversity
and age diversity. I
particularly value the input
from young people in
our community. But I do
need to improve my communication
methods with
young people. I’m a bit
of a Facebook novice but
my 20-something son is a
great help!

-

dure
you will use to deal

I hope I can recognise a
concern as it’s emerging
and respond as soon as
possible. I also have the
support of an excellent
and dedicated management
team who respond
promptly to issues in the
community. Sometimes
potential problems can
be foreseen and through
communication and consultation
we hope to avoid
or minimise any negative
impacts on the community.
-

what will they be ?
I am not planning any

changes to our Code of
Meeting Practice but if
anyone suggests an improvement,
I’d be happy
consider it.
on the 21 and 22nd of October
from 6am to 8pm
and the local celebration
will be held at the West
Ryde Community Centre
in Anthony Road from
7:30pm to 9:30pm.
Local Bahai spokesman
George Ahadizadeh said
the West Ryde event is
free and will include light
refreshments.
“We commence the
celebration with spiritual
greetings and prayers
and we will screen a video,
which is also being
shown at Bahai Temples
all around the world,” he
said.
“It is open to all people,
from any religion and any
background.”
There are around 150
Bahai followers in the City
of Ryde area and more
than 20,000 across Australia.
Their aim is to help others
through compassion and
charity and to teach the
message of Baha’u’llah,
who was born in Iran and
is buried in Acre.
“We are taught to be a
helping hand to everyone,”
he said.
The Bahai way of compassion
is based on the
faith’s spirituality.
“We have a concept of
the spiritual body and the
physical body we believe
in an afterlife.
“We compare the spiritual
body (soul) and the
physical body to a bird
in cage and if you break
open the cage you free
the bird.”
The ultimate goal of Bahai
is the peace and unity
of mankind and the faith
honours prophets from
Moses, to Jesus, to Buddha
and Mohammed.
“If you go into a Bahai
Temple you will be surprised
to see the Holy
Book of your faith there.
“This is also why our
temples have nine doors,
one door for each faith.
“We compare our faith to
a beautiful, which is beautiful
because it has many
diverse followers.”
Likewise, Bahai places a
great importance on both
tolerance and forgiveness.
“Bahai followers are persecuted
in Iran but we are
still there.
“We work against all injustice
and prejudice.”
Royal Rehab expand older driver program
Local rehabilitation and
Royal Rehab will
this month expand their
innovative Return2Driv-

Older Driver Assessment
program for elderly community
members.
Assessments will be conducted
by an assessor accredited
by NSW Roads
and Maritime services
(RMS) and can be completed
at Royal Rehab’s Ryde
facility or the participant’s
home.
An Older Driver Assessment
(ODA) is required by
the NSW government once
every two years when a
driver reaches the age of 85.
The on-road test can often
be a hurdle for older Australians
who may have to complete
this around an unfamiliar
Service NSW location.
Royal Rehab will oversee
all required liaison with RMS
to ensure the process is as
easy as possible.
Royal Rehab’s Older Driver
Assessment program will
be available to the elderly
based in select Sydney
suburbs.
If participants do not have
access to their own vehicle,
use of a Royal Rehab
ranged
upon request.
Royal Rehab Program
Manager Kylie Chambers
said she was thrilled to be
able to extend the services
ing
program.
“The ODA program allows
us to schedule home visits
with elderly drivers in our
community who need to
complete this requirement
to keep their license,” she
said.
“Our accredited assessor
takes them through practice
or testing in their own

neighbourhood, an opportunity
they might not have
had before.”
According to NSW RMS

drivers aged 85 and over
who completed the driving

The ODA program is part
of Royal Rehab’s broader
Brave Belinda shares
her journey with cancer
A BRAVE Macquarie Park nurse who was diagnosed with breast cancer has shared her story with
The Weekly Times in the hope it will encourage other women to seek a routine breast check up.
Macquarie Park’s Belinda
Marriott, 49, is a neonatal
nurse who was diagnosed
with breast cancer
She told The Weekly
Times the cancer was
detected shortly after
she went for a check up
alongside her mother and
it was later revealed a
lump on her breast was a
breast cancer.
After treatment, Belinda’s
cancer has not
spread but this brave
nurse still faces a further
four years of regular
check ups.
This is her story.
“My mum had a lump
removed many years ago,
so I had made the decision
to have regular mammograms.
“I have very dense breasts,
which can make it more dif-
tected
by a mammogram,
so I placed a lot of importance
on my GP doing regular
examinations as well.
“I’m so fortunate my
cancer was picked up in
the early stages”, Belinda
said.
After lumpectomy surgery
to remove the cancer,

radiotherapy treatment,
Belinda is now recovering
well and says she is passionate
about encouraging
all women to be more
breast aware.
“My younger cousin had
a mammogram after I told
her about my diagnosis
and from that screening,
found out that she had
breast cancer too.
“Something that has
really struck me is how
important it is to talk to
people, to promote more
awareness around breast
cancer, how to detect it,
and to encourage women
to do a self-check, see
their GP for a breast exam
or to have a mammogram,
it’s not that scary.
“I’ve learnt that cancer
doesn’t discriminate, it really
can happen to anyone,
so it’s better to take a proactive
approach.”
Statistics reveal that one
in eight Australian women
will be diagnosed with
breast cancer by the time
they turn 85 .
The latest data from the
Cancer Institute of New
South Wales shows that
in the Northern Sydney region,
more than 700 people
were diagnosed with
breast cancer in a single
year , while new research
released this month by
the Australian Institute of
Health and Welfare (AIHW)
estimates that there will
be more than 17,500 new
cases of breast cancer in
Australian women in 2017,
up from more than 15,900
in 2013 .
October is now designated
Breast Cancer
Awareness Month and Belinda
deliberately chose to
reveal her story to coincide
with this important event.
“If we only get a few
readers of The Weekly
Times to go for a check
up, we’ve achieved something
and who knows, we
might even save a life,”
she said.
As more people become
aware of the importance of
breast cancer check ups,
the condition is now receiving
more support from
governments and health
insurers.
The HCF’s Macquarie
Centre Branch Manager,
Carmen Santucci, said her
fund is proud to cover a
range of breast cancer related
services.
“More than 6,300 HCF
members have claimed for
services relating to breast

years, including 186 members
from the Macquarie
Park area.
Belinda is one of these
members and said having
private health insurance
is an important part of her
recovery.
“I was able to choose
my specialist surgeon and
I received much faster
treatment,” she said.
Explosive situation defused
at Hunters Hill Town Hall
A potentially explosive situation was defused at Hunters Hill Town Hall - not in the council
chamber but in the museum next door.
Hunters Hill Historical
Society, which runs
the museum, decided
to check its extensive
collection of artefacts
for any possibly hazardous
objects.
What transpired led
to swift action by police
at Gladesville and
the Army.
The Society turned
up a colonial-era gun,
in its original case, dating
back to the mid to
late-1800s.
The English-made
powder and ball percussion
revolver, similar
to the one used by
bushranger Ben Hall,
was handed in to the
police for safe-keeping.
Because the weapon
can no longer be kept
at the museum, the
Society is trying to establish
its provenance
and value to see if it is
of interest to a licensed
collector.
Also located were
three anti-aircraft
shells from the Second
World War and several
other non-military bullets
from around the
early 1900s.
Because of the potential
danger, Army
munitions experts were
alerted.
They examined the
armaments at the museum.
Three projectiles were
cleared but the others
were taken away to
be destroyed because
there was a possibility
they could still be live.
Society President

that, because safety
was an over-riding
concern, the Society
felt it should do the
right thing and get the
items checked out.
He commented: “We
would not like to have
been held responsible
for blowing the Town
Hall sky-high!
Fortunately, all has
been resolved satisfactorily.
The Society would
like to thank the police
and the Army for their
prompt response.”
The museum, now
hazard-free, is open to
the public weekdays
from 10am to 12 noon.
Ryde High School Class
of 1966.
50 year reunion for Ryde High School graduates
BACK in the early 1960s the high school system
changed in NSW when the Wyndham Scheme was introduced.
The ‘new’ era of education was

and a six year Higher School

students who enrolled in 1962
at the co-educational Ryde High
School and graduated in 1967
were the best!” says Paul Fredrickson,
one of those students
and a member of a reunion organising
committee.
“Over ten years ago a small
group of ex-students put together
a list of over 200 names

who attended at Ryde High,”
said Paul.
“They successfully made
contact with 140 of those
students. That led to a successful
40th reunion in
2007,” Paul said.
“We are continuing our
search for more of those exstudents
as we approach the
anniversary of our graduation
50 years ago. We are
now all aged between 67
and 69 years old but we all
still like to party”.
The committee of ex-students
has organised the 50th
Reunion for Saturday night
November 11 at North Ryde.
The Grand gathering of ex-
Ryde High School students,
who started school in 1962,
will celebrate 50 years since

Anyone who attended
school with them during
some or all of these years
are invited.
There will be a fee to help
pay for the venue and catering.
For further information
make contact by email at
reunion@rydehigh.org and
check the webpage at www.
rydehigh.org
Ryde High School is on
Smalls Road Ryde.
The school was shut down
at the end of 1996 but the
buildings continue to be
used by the State Government
and community organisations.
However, with the changing
local demographic, there
is increasing pressure to reopen
the school to cater for
the greater number of local
youth.
Lodge partners with tutorial
Tutorial Centre is
a NSW Department
of Education service
that works to
provide education
for students with
a variety of challenges
engaging in
learning.
Lodge Millennium
have been long-time
supporters of the tutorial
centre with a
strong focus on encouraging
our students
to be active
participants in their
education.
Recently, Joe Turner
and Ken Bock of
Lodge Millennium provided
a generous donation
to the Pennant
Parade Tutorial Centre
for the subsidy of their
first school camp.
Students worked
hard to be invited to
the week-long Canberra/Snowy
Mountains
excursion.
They took in the fantastic
educational opportunities
on offer
throughout Canberra
including Parliament
House and the War
Memorial with some
skiing and snowboarding
adding to the fun.
Principal Mark Gosbell
said: “This experience
will certainly impact
the students lives well
into the future and
support from Lodge
Millennium made the
excursion a reality for
many students.”
CAT OF THE WEEK
Tom’s cute and
cuddly life story
Tom is this week’s Cat Of The Week.
Tom is quite talkative and Jonine from Gladesville’s
World League For The Protection Of Animals translated
his story ...
“I have left my wild child days behind me as I now love
a cuddle and a soft blanket,” Tom said.

of Animals with my two kitten brothers I knew that as I

the humans would always want to slobber all over me.
“The humans persisted with me, especially one crazy
one.
ishing
school as I am still a bit weary with other humans
and other cats.
“However I am very adoptable if you are ready to take
me to the next step in my journey to a long and beautiful
life.
“Now that I have exchanged my hissing for the most
wonderful and therapeutic to humans’ purrs, I am ready
to move on.”
Already desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, vet
checked and loved by all Tommy just needs a forever
home where he can shine. If you’re interested in adopting
this beautiful feline please call Jonine on 0409741414 or
0409 741 414 at the WLPA on the corner of Victoria Road
Dinner celebration
THELMA Hilder and Paul Delves (pictured right) were recently crowned North
Epping Bowling Club’s Mixed Pairs champions - replicating their 2015 triumph by

Ryde athletes prove their mettle
FOUR of Ryde Athletics Centre’s most talented all-rounders recently competed at the
NSW All Schools Multi Event Championships - and each booked a spot in the NSW
team for the 2018 Australian National Championships.
Exciting prospects Chloe
Davis and Portia Amy-
Wilson (pictured) showed
their wares along with Sophie
Kavanagh and elder
sister Alana Kavanagh.
The multi event championships
require competitors
to compete in sprints,
hurdles, middle distance,
long and high jump and
shot put and javelin
throws.
Davis turned in outstanding
performances to claim
the gold medal and State
crown in the 18-19yrs age
group.
Amy-Wilson finished just
five points off the State title
when she snared a silver
medal in the 14-15yrs
age group while Sophie,
competing in the 12-13yrs
division, rounded out the
full set of medals for Ryde
when she secured her third
place and a bronze medal.
A jubilant Alana achieved
enough points to obtain a
national qualifier and join
the medallists in the NSW
team.
The quartet were in action
last week when they
competed at the NSW All
Schools Athletics Championships
Tigers to play home NRL games
in Auckland and Tamworth
WESTS Tigers rugby league
team will participate in a special
double header in New
Zealand in 2018.
As a part of the exciting initiative,
the Tigers will be taking one home
game to Auckland next season with
the club to lock horns with premiers
Melbourne Storm across the Tasman.
The Tigers will join the New Zealand
Warriors as the home teams for
this special event at Mt Smart Stadium
in Auckland.
Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe
said the club took its role in growing
the game seriously and looked forward
to being a part of this exciting
NRL initiative.
“The club is proud to be involved

work with the NRL and the Warriors
to grow the game,” said Pascoe.
“This double header is set to be a
great day out for the members and
fans of all four teams and we look
forward to seeing plenty of Wests Tigers
support in the stands.
“As a club we have strong links to
New Zealand through our fan base,

he said.
“We always had great support at
the Auckland Nines and when we
play the Warriors in New Zealand
and look forward to that continuing

“We’re committed to doing our part
to grow and develop the game both
at home and abroad and being involved
in this new double header is
another example of that,” said Pascoe.

that the club will be playing a home

The Tigers have partnered with the
NRL on this initiative, with the club

The club is no stranger to the New
England region having spent time in
the area as a part of the NRL’s Community
Carnival at the start of the
year.
Wests Tigers visited more than

held a number of junior clinics. Tam-
featuring Chris Lawrence and David
Nofoaluma.
Lawrence captained City to a 44-
“Rugby league has a long history in
Australia’s regional communities and
we’re proud to be playing a role in
continuing this by taking a game to
Tamworth,” said Pascoe.
