Now in its 32nd year and regarded one of Sydney’s largest outdoor family events, the Granny Smith Festival is expected to welcome up to 100,000 mums, dads, children and the young-at-heart to Eastwood on Saturday. They’ll be eager to enjoy the special vibe of the colourful,community-inclusive event and they won’t be disappointed by this year’s program of events. The Granny Smith Festival Committee chaired by former Eastwood Chamber of Commerce president De’ann Hespe has been meeting for many months with members of Ryde Council’s events team to ensure a “best ever” result. “This festival has something for everyone, including a traditional street parade, all-day entertainment, 250 market stalls, international food fair, carnival rides, apple giveaways, a singing competition, plus a fabulous family concert and spectacular Jerome Laxale commented. “The Granny Smith Festival is a celebration of our vibrant community and the tangy green apple that had its beginnings in Eastwood back in 1868 on a family ‘Granny’ Smith. “Granny Smith didn’t know it then, but the humble green apple she accidentally grew on a compost heap would go on to become the apple of choice for cooks the world over and be one of our nation’s best known exports.” The Granny Smith Festival includes the Grand Street Parade from 9.30am which is traditionally stars the TWT Granny Smith Festival Queen - this year, sic vintage car followed by1,000 participants which include marching clowns, community and school groups, Scouts and Guides, veteran and big garbo truck. ket Stalls with a treasure crafts to showbags and plants. There will also be an International Food Fair serving up noodles, kebabs, snow cones, vindaloo, chocolates, cup cakes, gozleme and home-made lemonade. Younger visitors will enjoy the spinning tea cups, the singing competition, the giant slide, dodgem cars, the cuddly animal farm and a treasure hunt. There will also be a Sustainable Kids’ Play Hub in the grounds of Eastwood Public School with interactive fun for children with a focus on sustainability, like a recycling relay challenge, a garden space with seed sowing and craft workshops. JA walking to Festival Bennelong MP John Alexander will walk to the Granny Smith Festival this Saturday down Balaclava Road from Epping to Eastwood as part of his 100Km walk across the electorate to raise awareness and money for the Leukaemia Foundation. He will arrive in time to join the Grand Parade in a vintage car to the official opening at the Trelawney Street stage and on to the TWT Festival Queen Prizegiving Presentation in Eastwood Shopping Centre.
