Returns to Eastwood<br />

This weekend the Granny Smith Festival returns to<br />

Eastwood for its 32nd year of festivities and fun.<br />

Thousands will come together to celebrate<br />

Eastwoodís world famous export alongside our<br />

wonderfully diverse culture, and our vibrant local<br />

community.<br />

There will be rides, performances, stalls and even<br />

to take part in all the action.<br />

Granny Smith Festival 2017<br />

Festival Bigger, Better than ever!<br />

Now in its 32nd year and regarded one of<br />

Sydney’s largest outdoor family events, the<br />

Granny Smith Festival is expected to welcome<br />

up to 100,000 mums, dads, children and<br />

the young-at-heart to Eastwood on Saturday.<br />

They’ll be eager to enjoy<br />

the special vibe of the<br />

colourful,community-inclusive<br />

event and they won’t<br />

be disappointed by this<br />

year’s program of events.<br />

The Granny Smith Festival<br />

Committee chaired by<br />

former Eastwood Chamber<br />

of Commerce president<br />

De’ann Hespe has been<br />

meeting for many months<br />

with members of Ryde<br />

Council’s events team to<br />

ensure a “best ever” result.<br />

“This festival has something<br />

for everyone, including<br />

a traditional street<br />

parade, all-day entertainment,<br />

250 market stalls,<br />

international food fair,<br />

carnival rides, apple giveaways,<br />

a singing competition,<br />

plus a fabulous family<br />

concert and spectacular<br />

<br />

Jerome Laxale commented.<br />

“The Granny Smith Festival<br />

is a celebration of our<br />

vibrant community and the<br />

tangy green apple that had<br />

its beginnings in Eastwood<br />

back in 1868 on a family<br />

<br />

‘Granny’ Smith.<br />

“Granny Smith didn’t<br />

know it then, but the humble<br />

green apple she accidentally<br />

grew on a compost<br />

heap would go on<br />

to become the apple of<br />

choice for cooks the world<br />

over and be one of our nation’s<br />

best known exports.”<br />

The Granny Smith Festival<br />

includes the Grand<br />

Street Parade from 9.30am<br />

which is traditionally stars<br />

the TWT Granny Smith<br />

Festival Queen - this year,<br />

by1,000 participants<br />

which include marching<br />

clowns, community and<br />

school groups, Scouts<br />

and Guides, veteran and<br />

Stalls with a treasure<br />

crafts to showbags and<br />

plants.<br />

There will also be an International<br />

Food Fair serving<br />

up noodles, kebabs,<br />

snow cones, vindaloo,<br />

chocolates, cup cakes,<br />

gozleme and home-made<br />

lemonade.<br />

Younger visitors will enjoy<br />

the spinning tea cups,<br />

the singing competition,<br />

the giant slide, dodgem<br />

cars, the cuddly animal<br />

farm and a treasure hunt.<br />

There will also be a Sustainable<br />

Kids’ Play Hub in<br />

the grounds of Eastwood<br />

Public School with interactive<br />

fun for children with a<br />

focus on sustainability, like<br />

a recycling relay challenge,<br />

a garden space with seed<br />

sowing and craft workshops.<br />

JA walking to Festival<br />

Bennelong MP John Alexander<br />

will walk to the Granny<br />

Smith Festival this Saturday<br />

down Balaclava Road<br />

from Epping to Eastwood<br />

as part of his 100Km walk<br />

across the electorate to raise<br />

awareness and money for<br />

the Leukaemia Foundation.<br />

He will arrive in time<br />

to join the Grand Parade<br />

in a vintage car to the official<br />

opening at the Trelawney<br />

Street stage and on<br />

to the TWT Festival Queen<br />

Prizegiving Presentation in<br />

Eastwood Shopping Centre.<br />
