“Violence
against women
means any act
of violence that
results in or is
likely to result in
physical, sexual
or psychological
harm or suffering
to women.
Under the UN Declaration on the
Elimination of Violence against
Women, 1993, violence against women
is a social (economy, health, welfare,
politics) problem – definitely not a
private problem of each individual
woman or a family. Violence against
women means any act of violence
that results in or is likely to result in
physical, sexual or psychological harm
or suffering to women. It also includes
threats with such acts, coercion
or arbitrary deprivation of liberty,
whether occurring in public or in
private life.
Therefore, with this factual detail of
women’s rights, it is an obligation for
every state and individual citizen to
observe the rights and refrain from
violating them. However, it still is a
working progress for most countries
to wholesomely observe these
entitlements. Taking an action – no
matter how little – is better than being
inaction. Please let everyone come on
board.
