THEATRE ARTS AT
MARYMOUNT MANHATTAN COLLEGE
A liberal arts education is an integral
part of students’ theatre studies and
training. It is our philosophy that the
more well-rounded the education of
theatre students, the better prepared
students are to create and produce
compelling and imaginative theatre.
We take great pride in mentoring our
students. Faculty meet with students on
an on-going basis to review class work,
discuss progress, advise on projects, and
guide artistic growth.
“A true testament to a
school is its teachers. I
was trained by teachers
that I will consider
mentors for the rest of
my life. Plus, I got to go
to college in New York
City … I mean, come on!”
’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Susan Cook Photography
BFA in Acting
(Audition and Interview Required)
The BFA in Acting is an intensive program that prepares
students for acting careers in the professional theatre and
offers education and training in contemporary realistic
acting, period styles, and Shakespeare. Our BFA in Acting
is an atypical 60-credit program. Most conservatory style
BFA programs require 90 credits in theatre and don’t offer
the integrated liberal arts education that Marymount
Manhattan College provides to prepare students for the
wide range of drama presented in the professional theatre.
BFA in Acting majors are exposed to a wide variety of
playwrights and acting styles in the four years of study.
Beginning in the spring semester of the freshman year, BFA
in Acting students audition for main stage productions
presented in the Theresa Lang Theatre and for student
directing projects.
“MMC, with its strong liberal arts
foundation and passionate faculty,
provided me with the opportunity
to grow ... as an artist and as
a human being ... opening my
eyes to imagine my future…with
curiosity, hope, and a viewpoint of
limitless possibilities.”
BA in Theatre Arts
With its seven concentrations, the 42-credit BA
in Theatre Arts offers students opportunities
to study with theatre professionals, work
on main stage productions or in video/film
projects, establish professional contacts, and
obtain internships with New York City’s major
theatres and professional organizations. Since
Marymount Manhattan is an undergraduate
college, students don’t compete with graduate
students for production, performance and
design opportunities.
Design and Technical Production
(Interview Required)
Students study one or more areas of theatre
design—sets, lights, costumes or sound—as
well as acquire technical production skills.
Students work on premieres of new works,
contemporary and period plays, film/video
projects, as well as musicals and dance
concerts in the Theresa Lang Theatre and the
J. William Bordeau Black Box Theatre.
Directing (Audition and Interview Required)
Our student directors discover their artistic
voices through learning to analyze texts,
making conceptual choices and guiding actors
in the rehearsal process, as well as directing
one-act plays and assisting faculty and guest
directors on the main stage.
Photo by Andreas Wagner, AD Lubow
Producing and Management
(Interview Required)
Students gain progressive experience in
running and calling productions in a variety
of styles in the Theresa Lang Theatre
and our J. William Bordeau Box Theatre.
Courses in production management and arts
administration provide an overview of how
arts organizations are managed and funded
throughout the United States, allowing
students to develop the skills and knowledge
for producing commercial and not-for-profit
productions. The inclusion of an internship
is specifically designed to help students
make connections to the job network in
New York City.
Theatre History and Performance
Texts (Online Application Required)
Students explore many aspects of theatre
studies including dramatic literature,
theatre history, performance dramaturgy,
and criticism. Electives offer courses from a
variety of fields, including art history and film
studies. This concentration is particularly
beneficial to students interested in careers in
literary management, dramaturgy, education,
journalism, historical research, and directing.
“The hands-on nature
of the classes… left
me ready to jump into
the technical theatre
world with real,
applicable skills and
knowledge.””
Electrician, The Lighting
Syndicate and The T.E.A.M.)
MARYMOUNT MANHATTAN COLLEGE | 5

Theatre and New Media
(Online Application Required)
Students interested in video, music, the web,
social media, writing, theatre, and performance
will explore emerging media technologies and
learn to work across media platforms to create
their own content and modes of expression.
Internships, field trips and projects with
innovative companies in the field connect
students to the digital arts scene in
New York City.
Theatre Performance
(Audition and Interview Required)
The Theatre Performance concentration offers
educational and training in a variety of acting
styles, from contemporary realism to more
experimental approaches. After two years of
intensive acting exploration and scene study,
students can choose from a variety of acting
courses, such as: Acting for the Camera, Audition
Techniques, Beyond Naturalism, Viewpoints,
Performing Shakespeare, and Clown Technique.
Beginning the spring semester of freshman year,
Theatre Performance students audition for main
stage productions presented in the Theresa Lang
Theatre and for student directing projects.
Writing for the Stage
(Online Application Required)
Photos by Andreas
Wagner, AD Lubow
Students develop individual voices and
writing techniques through classwork and
collaboration with actors and directors to
present their work in staged readings and
productions. Electives in creative writing
and screenplay, television, and webisode
writing help students to expand their abilities,
and an internship in literary management
places students in literary offices and script
departments of New York theatre companies
that match their interests.
MUSICAL THEATRE (Audition and Interview Required)
The Musical Theatre program is a four-year
sequence of year-long academic and performance
classes incorporating labs in Daily Dance and
weekly Private Voice. Typically paired with the
BA in Theatre Arts major, with a concentration
in Theatre Performance, the Musical Theatre
program prepares students for professional
careers as “triple threat” actor-singer-dancers.
Daily Dance is held in professional off-site
studios and a special topics class in production
numbers is the capstone to this training.
Private Voice is taught in professional studios
weekly, and students are placed with a teacher
who matches their vocal needs.
Performance opportunities include three
musicals per year in both the Theresa Lang
Theatre and off-campus venues, with partners,
such as The National Dance Institute, The York
Theatre Company, and Contemporary Musical
Theatre Writers.
Our students have had the privilege of working
with music directors, such as Stephen Oremus,
Darren R. Cohen, and David Loud; stage
directors/choreographers, such as Patricia Birch,
Larry Fuller, Ryan Kasprzak, Marcia Milgrom
Dodge, Christine O’Grady, and Josh Bergasse;
and composers, such as Charles Strouse, Paul
Jacobs, and Larry Grossman.
Taking advantage of our New York City location,
master classes and lectures continue to be
offered by Broadway’s finest such as Betty
Buckley, Jeff Calhoun, Martin Charnin, Adam
Guettel, Marc Kudisch, Norm Lewis, Donna
McKechnie, Lonny Price, Hal Prince, Chita
“Marymount Manhattan
College allowed me to
create the exact college
experience I wanted! The
wide variety of classes,
the wonderful professors,
and the convenience of
being in New York City
all helped me explore
many different aspects
of theatre arts. I got
real-life experience in
the city during my years
in school. That was the
most invaluable part of
my time at Marymount
Manhattan.”
Audition and Interview Information
To schedule a Theatre Arts audition or
interview, please visit our website at
www.mmm.edu. We urge you to schedule
your audition prior to November 15th, 2018,
as audition spaces will fill up. While we will
continue to take audition requests past that
date, if an audition date is full, your name will
be added to a waitlist. It is to your advantage to
audition in person at one of our audition sites
(NYC or regionally). However, if extraordinary
circumstances prevent travel, a video
audition can be submitted through the MMC
Admission’s Portal. Please review the guidelines
for specific video audition requirements.
An audition for the BFA in Acting and/or the BA
in Theatre Arts with a concentration in Theatre
Performance consists of one contemporary
monologue (from a full length play) no more
than two minutes in length. An audition for
the Musical Theatre program consists of one
contemporary monologue (from a full length
play) no more than two minutes in length.
In addition, you should also prepare 16 bar
cuts from both an uptempo and a ballad. For
students who sing in two distinct voices (belt
and soprano for women, chest and falsetto for
men), the music selections should showcase
each of your capabilities. Sheet music is required
and there will also be a brief dance call.
Students interviewing for programs in Design &
Technical Production, Producing & Management,
and Directing are asked to bring their portfolio
of work with them. This portfolio will mainly
serve as a starting point for a conversation
about theatre between you and the faculty
member. Materials can include designs, sketches,
photographs, renderings, prompt books, scripts,
or anything else that you feel comfortable talking
about in terms of your work.
Prospective students of Theatre History and
Performance Texts, Theatre and New Media, and
Writing for the Stage prospective students must
complete an online application for acceptance.
The online application is available on the MMC
Admissions Portal. These concentrations are a
strong complement to the College’s Business,
English, History, and Communications Arts
majors, should a student wish to consider a
double major.
