Bloodshot eyes gaze through
windows flooded by light,
blue sea shines bright,
low clouds obscure the coast...
Commotion in front,
excited sounds make their way back.
Heart-wrenching cries soon clamor,
Is it Home?
Milk and Honey?
Eyes-sea-landthe
breaking surf,
ivory white beaches,
rolling brown sand dunes,
lush green verdant fields.
We all celebrate!
Crying... Ha’tikva... Our Hope.
Land o f my ancestors,
I have finally arrived.
My long cycle is complete,
and by kissing the land
I am reborn.
HOME, at last.
o n m e bordé r..
(written at the outset of my one year stay in Israel Oct. 29, 1984)
On the border:
In my mind I can grab the other side.
I t ’s somehow already a part o f me.
I need only to find the path
To connection.
To pass over the border,
And find Israel.
The people
Oh, the people
The undefined chosen
Those flying the jets
Those sitting on the buses
And even the beggars on the corner
They endured the fight and the pain
And remain on the path.
And I am now on the border
To join them.
For I must,
And I am glad.
