It is important for all of us to continue to take in new ideas. Regardless of whether you finished your last formal learning one or 20 years ago, never think of your learning journey as complete. Ongoing learning has proven benefits for brain function. It improves focus, confidence, and self-esteem. For business owners and professionals, it can help you remain passionate and energised to remain at the top of your game. If you’re not a big reader, then think outside the box. There are a variety of ways to keep learning without signing up for an MBA, which could have a significant impact on your family and down time. The secret of constant learning is that it is more about having the right mindset than completing a list of courses. The good news is that any type of learning is beneficial, whether it’s specific to your business or industry, or something completely unrelated that you have an interest in or are passionate about. By trying something new, you are encouraging your mind to be open to diverse ways of thinking and experiences. So, pursue those hobbies or interests that you’ve always wanted to do but never quite got there – the dance, art, music, foreign language or photography class. This will help keep your mind sharp - and add to your conversational skills for networking. You can also think outside the box when it comes to developing new skills. For example, you can learn by giving back and volunteering. Join a non-profit or charity to use your current skills or work on new skillsets. Of course, there is the more traditional avenue for learning including seminars, workshops and tertiary courses. By trying something new, you are encouraging your mind to be open to diverse ways of thinking and experiences. They can be very beneficial for specific learning in your industry or field. So don’t rule these out, but make sure you look for other ways to learn as well. Our key advice is to make sure you maintain a reading routine. Those CEOs who read 60 books a year get the fact that most problems and challenges are not new. They know someone has already found a solution and written about it. They recognise the tips and knowledge that business books provide. If you’re not a big reader (and yes, some people just don’t enjoy reading books) then don’t give up. Turn to the internet. Look for summaries of popular business books, because we can guarantee someone has written a summary with the key points from all popular business books. Regularly read a variety of online blogs. This mass of information is transforming the way we shop, study, exercise, bank, navigate, deliberate, watch, fly, eat and sleep. Data collection and analysis is imbedded in every conceivable industry. This is leading to different business models, different labour skillsets, different knowledge requirements and information. Consumer data and applied analytics offer businesses objective insights into what customers want and the power to deliver it. The underlying premise is that technology will continue to make many aspects of our lives easier and our businesses potentially more profitable. But for everybody, one of the key challenges will be an increasing focus on maintaining cyber security Most small business owners don’t spend a lot of time wor- rying about their data. They may have secure passwords, but not think much about keeping them updated until money starts going missing or a website is taken down. Those among the great majority of New Zealand businesses that are in the small to medium sized enterprise category, in particular, can fall into the trap of thinking their business wouldn’t make a good target. Or they may rely on their bank to alert them when something has gone wrong. But no-one is too small to be targeted. Many cyber scams work precisely on the basis of extracting small amounts from many thousands of victims worldwide. And these days robbers don’t need to physically walk into a targeted bank brandishing sawn-off shotguns. They only need internet access to send phishing emails that may attach malicious software to banks’ computers, to access accounts or even bank vaults. Cyber attackers used to target computers and networks to steal or tamper with data. Now, cyber attackers target almost everything. Any devices that can be connected to cyberspace or that rely on computer systems are vulnerable. Mobile phones and their connected cellular networks can be hacked. Ransomware can make our files inaccessible until we pay a ransom. But it can also lock us in a room or keep us out of the fridge. These days cyber attacks can impact not just our computers, but also our lives. Thieves don’t always go for your accounts. There is an increase in identity theft and fraud. If you hold customer information it is important that steps are taken to prevent the unthinkable. A new government has finally been sworn in, Christmas is almost here, and there are some 500 working days between now and 2020. Talk to your IT partner about the steps you need to take now to secure your cyber future. Make sure all your backups and disaster recovery plans are working.
