Since it’s inception 1999, the state quarter program
has started more collectors on their numismatic
journey than any other program before it. It
really began at the end of 1997 when President
Clinton signed Public Law 105-124 authorizing
the State Quarters Program. Under the United
States Mint Director Philip N. Diehl, an innovative
program intended to honor each of the 50 states
was planned. The series was scheduled to release
5 quarters each year starting in 1999 in the order
each state ratified the Constitution or were admitted
to the Union. The reverse of each quarter
displayed a picture honoring the particular State.
On January 4, 1999 the Delaware Quarter was released,
displaying Caesar Rodney on horseback
who notably rode 80 miles to cast the deciding
vote in favor of independence.
