A Country Christmas A warm welcome of mulled wine by a log fire welcomes guests to the Lake District and a stay at Skelwith Bridge Hotel near Ambleside. In contrast to the formal and stately surroundings of our previous country choices, Skelwith sits in informal gardens with views over the surrounding fells. Dating back to the 17th Century, the former farmhouse, corn mill and hostelry has been lovingly converted and extended into the country house hotel it is today. A fell walker’s paradise with many walks starting at the hotel’s doorstep, Winderemere, Elterwater and Coniston are a short drive and the houses of Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and Ruskin are also conveniently located.
