Safety way guidance system
BS ISO 16069:2004 - Normally signage should be sited consistently throughout
the evacuation route to meet the needs of the most vulnerable occupant to maintain
confidence in the Safety Way Guidance System.
In high risk areas this should be reinforced by photoluminescent low level marking which
will be conspicuous when smoke obscures signs or information affixed at normal levels
(as defined on page 8). A “high risk area” is one without the benefit of natural lighting or
identified by risk assessment as particularly dangerous in emergency conditions.
The Responsible Person(s) in assessing the risk should consult the BS ISO 16069: 2004
recommendations on Safety Way Guidance System (SWGS) and decide to what extent
there is a need for such a system.
Telscape System
Our Telscape System will assist the Responsible Person(s) in implementing SWGS to meet
the needs of staff, subcontractors, visitors, customers, disabled, young and old people.
Corridors - Floors and walls
By marking walls, the position of staff, visitors etc. can
be established in ‘black out’ conditions. This can be done
by highlighting handrails, safety rails and skirting with
photoluminescent material. These markings should be continuous
and will help identify other people through their silhouettes.
In each corridor on one side (or both sides if wider than 2m)
the Telscape system recommends fitting a wayfinding strip
consisting of a transparent safety rail holder to secure a rigid
photoluminescent strip. This can be placed 1m off the floor (and/
or lower than 400mm in high risk areas).
These strips can be easily cut and shaped for installation.
the photoluminescent strip.
