Dear Friends,
November 2017
November is here and you begin to wonder where the year has
gone. The clocks have gone back, the darkness draws in,
the trees are bare, and morning mist can lie on the fields.
November is very much a time of remembering. It begins
with our “Service of Light” on the 29th October. During this
service we remember and pray for family members or
friends who have passed away. Those who we know
personally. On Armistice Day, 11th November we will gather
at 11 0’Clock around the Cenotaph in Market Rasen for
our Act of Remembrance. On the 12th November we
will hold our annual Service of Remembrance with the
Royal British Legion. At this service we will remember
those who made great sacrifice, have died or have
been injured or maimed fighting to protect us, to bring peace and justice for all
people and continue to do so throughout the world today. As well as honouring
those who gave their lives, we must also honour their memory in keeping faith
with them and use our energies to build the sort of world that they held dear. For
peace and harmony amongst all nations and peoples.
As the years go by, there are less and less people who were living during the
Second World War. However it is important to stop and remember the great
sacrifices that were made by so many, and those who make sacrifice today. The
freedoms that we continue to enjoy today have come at great cost.
The sacrifice made by others reminds me of the sacrifice that Jesus made for
us. In John’s Gospel we read the famous words “Greater love has no man than
this:to lay down one’s life for his friend” (John 15:13). Jesus gave us the ultimate
sacrifice for our freedom.
At the end of November, our Church year will come to a close and we begin the
season of Advent. Traditionally we have always held a number of Advent
courses and this year will be no different. This year our Advent course has been
written by Rev David Atkinson and Rev Claire Walker. The course is called “Four
Candles” and each session focuses on one of the people represented and
remembered by the four candles around the Advent wreath: Patriarchs,
Prophets, John the Baptist and Mary. The course aims to be a preparation to
welcome Jesus into our lives afresh at Christmas. A space to consider your
response to God at work in your life, and to empower and equip you to live out
your faith in your daily life. I hope very much that you will join one of the Advent
groups.
God Bless
Rev Steve
News from Market Rasen
Church of England Primary School
November 2017
Welcome to our Autumn Term update from Market Rasen Church of England
Primary School. Some of our Collective Worship Council members have
contributed to this edition of our newsletter.
In September, our Year Sixes went to Carlton Lodge in Thirsk. One child said the
best thing about the residential trip was kayaking and the challenge course where
the children were able to get very muddy. Another child thought the stay was a
great experience where you could work on building your independence. All of the
children (and adults) had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed their trip away.
Our Year Five children recently wrote and performed their Harvest Festival
service which took place at St. Thomas’
Church. The children read about
Harvest and performed Harvest songs
to the rest of the school and lots of
parents who were able to join us. We
would like to thank everyone who
donated food for the Salvation Army. It
is very much appreciated by local
people who benefit from your donations.
We recently held our New Parents’ Evening for children and their parents who are
looking to join us in September 2018. Some of our prefects helped to show the
parents round and the children really enjoyed seeing our school and having the
opportunity to try out activities in our Reception classes.
Our Year Three/Four children will soon be visiting a Butterfly World to find out
more about creatures linked to their topic and our Year One/Two children had an
amazing time at Wollaton Hall where they got to see lots of exhibits at the
dinosaur exhibition.
The next term is fast approaching and we have lots of exciting events planned.
The children are looking forward to their visit by a theatre group to perform The
Wizard of Oz and we will be busy practising for the Christingle Service where the
children will be presented with Christingles. We are very excited about all of the
events around the town that we are going to be involved in during the lead up to
Christmas. We look forward to seeing you at these events.
If you wish to contact us at anytime, please phone the School Office on 01673
842395 or visit our website at www.marketrasen.lincs.sch.uk
You can also follow us on Twitter at @NorthWoldsFed where you will find out
more about what we have been doing in school.
News from Legsby Primary School
It’s half term already! And Legsby School has been exceptionally busy since
returning from the summer break. The children were delighted to find that in
addition to the newly built Legsby Lodge, the outside play area has also been
refurbished with a brand new trim trail. As ever, the children have been working
hard but have still found time to get out and
about in the community. We had a fabulous
Harvest celebration in Legsby Church at
which the pupils enjoyed sharing their work.
The audience were also treated to the first
performance of our choir after a term’s worth
of lessons with Mrs Braddish. It was an
impressive performance and their voices
filled the church beautifully. Thank you to all
the parents and carers who kindly donated
the items for the Nomad Trust.
We also sent a really enjoyable morning
collecting and juicing apples, while learning all
about the history of agriculture in Lincolnshire.
The children have also been doing their bit for
good causes. Firstly we raised money for
Jeans for Genes Day by coming to school in
non-uniform. And secondly, we dressed up as
our favourite countries - this was to raise
money to help former pupil Julia Randle
achieve her goal of working with Project Trust
after completing her A levels. Good luck Julia.
We have also welcomed two new staff members to the team, Miss Vout and Mrs
Gramson.
Finally, a warm welcome to the seven Busy Bees who have joined receptions this
term - they will be joined by a further 6 in January. That’s almost a swarm!
Thank you to all who have supported us this term - it is always appreciated.
A Letter from the Bishop
November 2017
Dear Friends,
It has been a great encouragement to hear that a large
number of people attended the recent launch of the pilot
stage of the Community of St Hugh. The launch event,
which took place in the magnificent setting of Stow Minster,
offered people an opportunity to hear more about this new
community, to share in worship together, and pledge to
take part in this pilot phase and ongoing shared
discussion, prayer and discernment.
The Community of St Hugh is a community called to
pray in, with and for the Diocese of Lincoln. It is a
community of prayer called into being by God and
is open to anyone, regardless of their age or
experience. It invites people to deepen their sense of discipleship, their life of
prayer and their experience of their faith. As we know, prayer is at the heart of our
being as Christians; it should undergird our whole lives and see us set time aside
to worship God and also find time to be with God and to listen for his voice in the
scriptures and in the needs of others and the world we live in.
In speaking about prayer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has said: ‘If
we want to see things changed, it starts with prayer. It starts with a new spirit of
prayer, using all the traditions, ancient and modern. When it comes, it will be
linked to what has gone before, but it will look different – because it is a new
renewal for new times. God’s created community is perfectly designed for its time
and place. It almost always comes from below. It comes from Christians seeking
Christ.’
Here in the Diocese of Lincoln we have an opportunity and a responsibility to play
our part in seeking to renew the whole community of greater Lincolnshire,
transforming the lives of all the people God has given us to love and care for. This
hope and endeavour will form an important part of our prayers as the pilot stage
progresses, ahead of the planned full launch of the community at Pentecost next
year (20th May 2018).
If you are interested in finding out more about the Community of St Hugh, please
see the information and resources published on the diocesan website, call the
diocesan Mission Team (01522 50 40 50) or send an email to
discipleship@lincoln.anglican.org
In the meantime, may we pray for one another and for this exciting new
community, and may we take encouragement from the life and legacy of St Hugh,
who we will remember as a diocese on 17th November.
God Bless
+ Bishop Christopher
Harvest Festival
November 2017
A wonderful Harvest Festival at St. Thomas Market Rasen was well attended
and the congregation enjoyed the Children and Young Persons groups
sharing what they had learnt through
the telling of story of Jesus feeding
the 5000, using Lego.
After the service a ‘bring and share’
lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by all,
with a great selection of food on offer.
A big thank you goes out to all who
attended the service and shared in
our Harvest Lunch .
Everyone Welcome
Conversations with God - First Monday monthly
We have now met for a few months and have enjoyed looking at
'prayer' - talking with God.
As a group we have looked at why, when, what, how, and where we
pray. Road signs have sparked our thoughts as to who we could pray
for. Considering acronyms has encouraged us as to ways to pray.
Come and join us as we discuss and pray together. Next group
Dementia Service
At the Dementia Service on October 1st we met to celebrate Harvest. It was
a relaxed time and we sang our favourite hymns along with prayers and bible
reading. Rev Peter helped us to consider how we can give thanks for the
past, present and future by looking at the potato. With the potato, the
farmer has to plant the seeded potato in the past to grow, we eat the refined
product now, in the present, but the farmer has to think of the future by
preparing the ground to plan again for a future crop.
This was likened to the Church, the family of God. We build on the past, look
at the present and how we can help each other in the future - thanking God
for his faithfulness to us.
The next Dementia Service is 5th November 2017 at 3pm.
Come and join us. All are welcome.
DIOCESE OF LINCOLN LADIES’ CHOIR
On Saturday 14th October, we were treated to a concert at St Thomas’ given by
the Diocesan Ladies Choir under the leadership of their director, Hilary Punnett.
The programme started with 3 short pieces arranged for upper voices, including
the folk tune Down by the Sally Gardens. We then moved onto the concert’s
main work, the Requiem by
Gabriel Faure. This challenging
work is in 7 movements and was
expertly conducted by Hilary and
e x p e r t l y a c c o m p a n i e d b y
Malcolm Pentelow on the organ.
The choir gave a splendid
performance which was much
appreciated by the audience.
A raffle was followed by a light
buffet in the Church Room.
Many thanks to the Diocesan Ladies Choir, Hilary Punnett and Malcolm
Pentelow for giving us a splendid concert and to those who organised the
tickets, raffle and refreshments.
Thank you to all who have bought Children’s
Society Christmas Cards and other items so
far. Orders to the value of over £450 have
been made and the cards etc should be with
us soon. It is not too late to order cards or
other items such as Advent calendars and
Advent candles, gift bags and wrapping
paper. If you don’t see me in Church you
can always give me a ring on 842257. Last year 49p in the £ on card orders went
to the work of The Society, so buying cards or other items is a very easy way to
support this work.
Thank you, too, to those who have handed in their House Boxes. If you haven’t yet
done so, please give your Box to Jenny or to me as soon as possible. Jenny would
like to have all the Boxes in by Sunday 5 th November. If you would like your Box to
be collected, please give me a ring, 842257.
Sunday 3 rd December is Advent Sunday and at 3pm the annual Christingle Service
will take place in St Thomas’. Those of you familiar with the Service will know what
a joyful – and sometimes surprising – occasion this is with a large congregation and
the children of Market Rasen Primary School taking part and there’s always the
excitement of the lighting of the Christingle candles! I hope that you will be able to
join in the excitement this year. All money collected at the Service goes to support
the work of The Children’s Society.
Mal
Bringing Hope
The Children’s Society is a voluntary organisation of the Church of England. As a
Christian, social justice organisation we are dedicated to working alongside children
and young people to create a more fair and just society for us all. The Society
works with children wherever they are disadvantaged or in danger - on the street –
in prison – in schools - in the home – in communities,
If you believe every child deserves a decent chance in life,
you believe in everything we stand for.
You can find more about the work of The Society and how you can support it at
