How does Structural Chiropractic differ 

from traditional approaches? 

Most traditional approaches of manual therapy 

work towards pain relief by loosening muscles and 

increasing general joint mobility. We include these 

aspects but in addition we guide spinal shifts back 

towards a more neutral position, with the aim of 

improving your aches and pains. A neutral position is 

the optimum position for your spine. 

What is a spinal shift? 

There are ranges of normal for spinal alignment, so 

your spine may not necessarily be perfectly aligned. 

However, bad posture and poor lifting habits, along 

with falls, bumps and knocks, can cause the spinal 

alignment to shift away from normal. Unfortunately, 

the further away the spine moves from its optimal 

position the more tension and stress is put upon 

muscles, ligaments and discs. This can lead to 

secondary problems. 

What secondary conditions can result from 

spinal misalignments? 

Some people may not feel any symptoms, they 

may simply visit a chiropractor because of concerns 

about posture. Other people may experience back or 

neck pain, sciatica (a pain that runs down your leg), 

headaches and arthritis. 

How do I know if I have a spinal shift? 

Many of our patients visit the clinic after more 

traditional approaches have been less successful and 

symptoms return periodically or just won’t go away. 

If you find yourself slouching a lot of the time and 

constantly reminding yourself to straighten, it is likely 

that you have a spinal shift. Your friends and family 

may also see changes in your posture. 

How is a spinal shift diagnosed and 

treated? 

We use a variety of non-invasive spinal imaging, 

including 3-D Spinal Analysis Machine, Digital Spinal 

Image Analysis and Digital Structural X-rays as well 

as examination procedures to make an accurate 

diagnosis of what is happening in your spine. All 

these tests take place in the comfort of the clinic and 

are combined with orthopaedic, chiropractic and 

neurological tests before a diagnosis is given. 

Your treatment will include a variety of spinal 

adjustments and small gentle movements in 

specific regions of the spine. In addition, we advise 

on ergonomics and provide a structural exercise 

programme. Once your treatment is completed we 

will give you a full re-examination and show you the 

difference in your spinal alignment and you’ll feel the 

pain relief for yourself.

Rehoming with the RSPCA 

Now that your house has quietened down after the festive season, 

it might be a good time to think about sharing it with a fourfooted 

friend. 

It is shocking how many RSPCA rescue cats are waiting to be 

rehomed. Some have lost their carer, others have been abandoned 

and some injured. All cats from the RSPCA are assessed and 

returned to health before rehoming takes place. They are also 

neutered, injected against flu, treated for fleas, mites, ticks and 

worms and then all are micro-chipped. 

The fosterers also check what sort of cat would suit your home 

and circumstances. They are able to make an incredibly accurate 

assessment of both your and the cat’s personalities! Once the 

decision is made, your cat will come home with you and you’ll find 

yourself buying all sorts of food until you find the one s/he likes! 

It costs £60 to rehome and in addition you will receive one 

month’s free insurance and the second part of their injections. 

Your new family member will need to stay indoors for about a 

month and you will need to transfer your details to the microchip 

and remember to get the final jabs. Soon you’ll know who is in 

charge and your house will become a home. 

Chubby round the 

edges - no weigh to live! 

Our four legged friends are as prone as us to adding 

a few extra pounds over Christmas. The extra treats 

and left-overs are too much to resist! Unfortunately, 

the additional weight can dramatically increase the 

number of health problems that can develop in cats 

and dogs and make that all-important exercise painful. 

Nicky, vet nurse from the Vet Centre, Maids Moreton, 

says, “Many of the dogs that are overweight develop 

arthritis at a much earlier age, making walking 

uncomfortable and really impacting on their quality 

of life. We can manage the pain once they have it 

but ideally we would try and avoid getting into this 

situation.” 

There are many other conditions that overweight pets 

are prone to, such as diabetes, respiratory problems 

and urinary issues. Hannah, vet from the Vet Centre, 

Cherry lane, says, “Treats have a very high calorie count 

(that’s why they’re so tasty!) and are one of the main

is to either use low-fat treats or to measure out all their 

food for the day in the morning, and from that take a 

few biscuits to use as treats. They still get the reward 

of having a treat but none of the extra calories.” 

The other great way to help shed a few pounds is to 

increase exercise levels. For dogs this means longer 

walks and retrieving. It can be a bit more challenging 

for cats but playing games with them can help - Good

on 16 February - and that’s the 

Chinese New Year. 

Bamboo Cottage began life in the 

year of the Rat and those born 

under this sign are said to be 

healthy and able to adapt easily 

to the environment – both are 

certainly true of this business. The 

success is, however, more likely 

to be down to the efforts of the 

family who have worked incredibly 

hard for the past 10 years. 

The excellent Chinese food 

served at the Bamboo Cottage 

is produced by head chef and 

Method 

1. Heat oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6 and place a 

baking tray inside. 

2. Heat olive oil in a large frying pan, add the broccoli 

and the shallots, fry gently. 

3. Increase heat, add balsamic vinegar and let it 

bubble, stirring occasionally, until sticky. Tip into a 

roasting tray with the rosemary, roast for 20 minutes 

until veg is soft and crisp. 

4. Unroll a 320g short crust pastry sheet leaving it on 

its paper. Pile the cooked veg into the centre of the 

pastry, leaving a 3cm border. 

5. Crumble the feta over the veg. Fold the excess

Happy Birthday Milton Keynes 

The Wolverton and Greenleys parish area pulled out 

all the stops to celebrate Milton Keynes 50th birthday. 

Their MK50 makeover began with themed flags created 

by local artist Rachel Wright hanging from retail units. 

The Town Council released three brand new trails on 

the App platform ‘MK Trails’. You can now delve into 

the town’s history and look out for the new Children’s 

Trail on the App. More accompanied historical trails are 

planned for next year. Throughout 2017 local school 

children were busy with ’50 free things to do’ and a 

summer holiday activity passport in collaboration MK 

Gallery and The Museum of Computing. 

Clio, Saxon Bridge’s bright orange cow, accompanied a 

group of cyclists from the War Memorial in Wolverton to 

Ploegsteert, Belgium to visit local soldier Albert French’s 

grave. Over £50,000 was raised for the Milton Keynes 

Rugby Club. The return Twin Town visit was celebrated 

with a Food and Craft Fair at Wyvern School, MK 

Museum’s Victorian weekend and a Brass Concert with 

both town bands at Kings Community Centre. 

Western Road Recreation Ground came alive at The 

Wolverton MK50 Summer Festival where live local artists 

like The Ultimate Beatles entertained. Community 

groups also showcased the Wolvertonian spirit on 

stage. Three separate street parties celebrated the 

town and a dedicated team worked tirelessly to make it 

look bloomin’ marvellous. Wolverton in Bloom’s efforts 

were rewarded with an RHS Britain in Bloom Gold - the 

highest award achieved over the last 11 years. 

A spectacular lance work for MK50 completed an 

amazing display at the 17th annual Wolverton Firework 

Display. The 29th Lantern Festival made some ‘Make 

50me almighty Noise’ with five samba bands at the 

parade. To end a fantastic 2017 for Wolverton and 

surrounds, the Secret Garden was transformed into 

a magical illuminated wonderland. Over eight days, 

6,000 visitors from across the area enjoyed the work 

of renowned light artist Ulf Pedersen, glow statues 

and torch fireshows by the Black Sheep Collective, all 

bringing the natural beauty of the Secret Garden to life.

Rats - how do I prevent them? 

Clean up around bird feeders, don’t 

leave pet food around, or put cooked 

food on your compost heap. 

How do I know if they have moved 

in? 

Look out for rat droppings, holes 

around sheds and materials shredded 

for bedding. Check under decking and 

listen for scratching sounds, especially 

at night. 

How do I get rid of them? 

Traps and bait. You can do it yourself 

but be very careful, if putting down 

poison, that no child or pet can 

access it and don’t block escape 

routes or you’ll be left with a 

decaying corpse. Traps leave you 

to dispose of anything caught, so 

sometimes it’s best to leave it to 

the experts.

Camellias are exotic, fragrant 

shrubs which originated in China 

and Japan. Of the same family as 

tea plants, they became popular 

with collectors in the 19th century 

and have been selectively bred to 

produce the wonderful varieties 

available today. 

Camellias can thrive if given good 

light with some shade, welldrained, 

slightly acidic soil and 

protection from strong winds. 

Sow your spinach 

Tasty, nutritious and versatile, spinach is a great choice for the 

vegetable patch. Eaten raw in salads, wilted or cooked quickly, it adapts 

to many cuisines. 

Sow 2.5cm deep in rows 30cm apart in fertile soil enriched with wellrotted 

compost. Make regular sowings for plentiful supplies. 

Keep rows moist to prevent bolting in hot weather, protect plants from 

birds and thin out, allowing air to circulate to avoid downy mildew. 

With protection from cold, spinach can be grown almost all year 

round. Sow summer varieties from February – under fleece or cloches, 

outdoors from March to the end of May. Sow winter cultivars in August 

and September, covering from October.

for winter use. 

Most flower buds form on current 

year’s growth, so prevent flower 

bud loss by ensuring the plant 

doesn’t dry out. Camellias prefer 

rain water.

where it joins the root system to 

prevent rotting. 

For the best displays, fertilise 

during the growing season – but 

remember over-feeding these 

plants can kill them.

Celebrating 10 years! 

Congratulations to Stony in Bloom who during 2018 

will be celebrating their 10th anniversary. 

Their plans for this year and beyond are to maintain 

the same high standards they have reached during 

the last ten years. More volunteers are helping at their 

twice weekly work parties, which means less weeds. 

Their partnership with the Business Association has 

meant a successful transition from the summer to 

winter planter changeover, with bright yellow winter 

pansies now keeping the streets cheerful. Future plans 

include a new colourful perennial bed in Fullers Slade. 

All these plans need regular fundraising and at the 

end of summer, the High Street giveaway table saw 

generous donations as pelargoniums and begonias 

were rehomed. Ticket sales and the raffle at the annual 

Calcutta Brasserie event made another £1000. These 

events will contribute hugely to the exciting ideas for 

a new bed and revamping existing ones. 

SSIB have great links with the community - their 

winter shrubs rest over the summer at York House and 

they work hard with St Mary and St Giles School. Last 

year the school reached Level 4 in the RHS Campaign 

for School Gardening, having shown evidence of a 

healthy eating project when vegetables grown at 

the school were used. For the award they also had 

to design a fund-raising project for gardening. Once 

again Lesley Corcoran and children from the school 

council organised this successful task.

Britain in Bloom 

award. Marks 

were gained 

for their floral displays and the environment 

(noted to be graffiti and litter-free), as well as the 

biodiversity, wildlife and sustainability. The judges 

were also impressed by the community and business 

involvement. 

Local contractor Axiom B assists with the hanging 

baskets, including the task of watering them. Dobbies, 

Tesco, Co-operative Funeralcare and KnorrBremse 

contribute financially, while many other individuals 

look after planters. Bridgman Landscapes trim hedges, 

weed the roadsides and take away the rubbish on 

litter-picking days. 

Making Wolverton Special 

The Secret Garden, the Urb Farm, the Community 

Orchard and Greenleys First School are incredible 

spaces. However, it is the local people behind their 

creation and continued maintenance that make them 

really special. 

Moving onwards 

Wolverton and Greenleys in Bloom want to improve 

the Community Garden in Greenleys, as well as 

continue with their other projects. The Royal wedding 

and the centenary of the end of the First World War 

will be reflected in the planting schemes, which will 

make much use of the colours red, white and blue. 

Wolverton and Greenleys in Bloom would love 

another GOLD award.

distraction 

If you were lucky enough to get a new mobile phone 

or the latest sat nav for Christmas – think before using 

them while driving. 

Research shows that using these helpful devices 

while driving can lead to devastating consequences. 

You’re often less observant, more likely to make wrong 

decisions and if tired, stressed or emotional the risks 

increase. Hands-free doesn’t make much difference 

either. 

Last March the fines for drivers caught using their 

phone, increased to £200 and 6 penalty points on their 

licence. If you go to court, fines can be up to £1,000 

or £2,500 for drivers of goods vehicles or passenger 

carrying vehicles with 9 or more passengers. 

The safest answer is Switch It Off.

Sat Nav Tips 

Satellite navigation devices are great for planning and 

helping find your destination. However, they can be 

confusing and as distracting as your phone. ROSPA 

recommend the following tips for using your sat nav: 

• Pre-programme the device before you get into your 

car 

• Check your journey before you leave - reduce your 

reliance on the sat nav 

• Place the sat nav where it will not obscure vision 

• Take note of road signs on your journey - some 

suggested roads may be unsuitable for your vehicle 

• Choose a device that gives vocal directions 

• Keep your sat nav up-to-date

when they use their devices.

In wintery conditions worn out tyres can be even 

more hazardous than at other times of the year. The 

legal limit of your tread is 1.6mm, but some European 

countries expect a tread depth of 4mm in winter. 

The easiest way to check your tread is to use a depth 

gauge, available at most car accessories retailers. 

Weekly or fortnightly checks are recommended, but 

it’s even more important before a long journey. Check 

in several places, following the instructions of the 

device and look for cuts, splits, bulges or other unusual 

signs at the same time. 

Still confused? Pop down to your local garage 

where you will probably also get an indication of 

approximately how many miles your tyres may 

have left in them. Get caught driving below the 

recommended tread and you could face a fine of up 

to £2,500 per tyre.
