(1935–1940). Part Two of <strong>the</strong> Ken Burns film explores<br />

<strong>the</strong> U.S. government’s efforts to rescue <strong>the</strong> desperate<br />

inhabitants of <strong>the</strong> Dust Bowl, and spotlights <strong>the</strong> exodus<br />

of many families westward and <strong>the</strong> discrimination<br />

against <strong>the</strong>m as “Okies.” Government experts work<br />

with farmers to develop conservation techniques; and<br />

government aid proves vital to <strong>the</strong> region. Finally a wet<br />

cycle finally returns and wheat booms again, setting<br />

<strong>the</strong> stage for a new Dust Bowl until <strong>the</strong> region taps <strong>the</strong><br />

land for a new source of water for irrigating farmlands.<br />
