SciGirls airs Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. on the WETA Kids channel Popular science series SciGirls rolls out 10 new episodes on the WETA Kids channel in November, engaging girls ages 9–13 in science, technology, engineering and math. Each half-hour episode follows a different group of enthusiastic, real SciGirls, who collaborate, communicate, engineer and discover — accompanied by two animated characters, a plucky SciGirl named Izzie and her best friend Jake, who tie the series together with their ongoing adventures. Filmed in reality TV’s verité-style, SciGirls makes science and engineering into the kind of social experience girls enjoy. Program participants work with women scientist- and engineer-mentors on projects such as engineering an ice-cream-making bike, designing an earthquake app, learning urban beekeeping, using real forensic methods to solve a “crime,” and more. The series also features remarkable interactivity, garnering a “New Approaches” Daytime Emmy Award for linking its shows and website — pbskids.org/scigirls — in inventive ways to ignite girls’ curiosity. Classical W TA 90.9 FM Classical for Washington Piano Virtuoso Hamelin on Front Row Washington In 1831, Frédéric Chopin arrived in Paris to fi nd the city overrun with pianists. As he wrote in a letter home to Warsaw, “I don’t know where there are more jackasses and more virtuosos than here.” That he struck up a friendship with Charles-Valentin Alkan, an Orthodox Jew, is no surprise. They shared incredible pianistic skills, yet they both eschewed the concert stage and the overblown world of Parisian hauteur. Instead, they composed some of the most stunning Romantic piano music ever written, embracing small musical forms such as dances and folk tunes, and melding them with lyricism, balance, and exquisite melodic phrasing. On Monday night, November 5 at 9 p.m., Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington presents Canadian piano virtuoso Marc- André Hamelin in a recital showcasing these two great 19th-century composers. Recorded last April in the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater, the concert was presented by Pro Musica Hebraica, a non-profi t organization dedicated to presenting lost and neglected masterpieces of Jewish classical music. The program features Alkan’s Souvenirs: Trois Morceaux dans le genre pathétique and Symphony for Solo Piano, as well as Chopin’s Nocturne in D-fl at major, Op. 27/2 and Barcarolle in F-sharp major, Op. 60. Of particular note is an encore composed by Mr. Hamelin himself in 2011. Titled Variations on a Theme of Paganini, the piece is a staggeringly diffi cult send-up of Paganini’s familiar work, complete with boogie-woogie asides, jazz riffs, and stylistic quotes from Bach, Beethoven, Liszt and Rachmaninoff that you won’t want to miss! Front Row Washington is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Marc-André Hamelin Classical Countdown on Classical WETA 90.9 FM Visit classicalweta.org to participate in Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Classical Countdown this month and choose music selections to be featured on the air. Classical WETA will post an online list of more than 200 classical works and invites listeners to vote for their favorite three pieces of music. The “polls” are open November 5–11 for one week and once votes are tallied, the top 90 pieces will be played November 19–22, counting down to the top piece, which airs at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. FRAN KAUFMAN Choral Showcase in November Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s broadcast Choral Showcase wraps up Hooked on Classical weekend — November 2-4 — on Sunday night at 9 p.m. with music from long before and long after the Classical Period. Among featured works is one from the 500-year-old Eton College Choirbook, a magnifi cent setting of the Magnifi cat by William, Monk of Stratford. The performance by Tonus Peregrinus of this music will spellbind you from fi rst note to last. Also on the broadcast is Lori Laitman’s Vedem, a powerful tribute to the human spirit. It is a setting of poetry by teenage boys who were prisoners in the Terezín concentration camp during World War II. Like so many, the boys did not survive, but their memory lives on thanks to the miraculous preservation of their magazine — Vedem — and Lori Laitman’s compelling 2010 piece. On Sunday, November 11, Choral Showcase puts a new spin on a Twin Spin weekend. Anticipating what Johannes Brahms would do 200 years later in his German Requiem (which aired in late-October), Heinrich Schütz’s setting of “How Lovely Are Thy Tabernacles” (which Brahms would use as the middle movement of his great work) is featured, in addition to Schütz’s German Burial Mass, which, like the Brahms, uses text other than the Latin Requiem Mass to honor our dead.
