The WETA UK Event: The Complete Sherlock Holmes Series I & II air Saturdays, Nov. 17–Dec. 1, 8–11 p.m. After The Complete Downton Abbey wraps up in mid-November, WETA UK presents The Complete Sherlock Holmes, featuring the fi rst two seasons of Masterpiece’s contemporary adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective novels. Set in 2010 London, the six 90-minute cases star Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as the great Baker Street sleuth and feature Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, The Offi ce UK) as Dr. Watson and Rupert Graves as Scotland Yard’s Inspector Lestrade. In an age of forensic detection, it is still Sherlock’s brilliant brain and powers of deduction that crack the updated cases: A Study in Pink and The Blind Banker air November 17; The Great Game and A Scandal in Belgravia air November 24; and The Hounds of Baskerville and The Reichenbach Fall (a death struggle with Holmes’s arch-rival, criminal mastermind Moriarty) air December 1. Rosemary and Thyme Thursdays at 8 p.m., beginning November 15 The charming contemporary drama series Rosemary and Thyme features a unique twist, mixing two favorite public television genres: gardening and mystery. In the programs, two gardening enthusiasts fi nd themselves caught up in a series of murder cases. Combining beautiful British countryside and estate locations, gripping stories and engaging performances, the storyline features two women looking for a new direction after major changes in their lives. Brought together by the sudden death of a mutual friend, lecturer Rosemary Boxer and newly divorced former policewoman Laura Thyme discover a shared passion for horticulture — and a talent for investigation. COURTESY DLT ENTERTAINMENT ©BBC November Premieres Classic, Quirky and Contemporary Blackadder Sundays at 9 p.m., beginning November 11 Many great men have played a part in shaping Britain’s noble heritage. Others, men like Edmund Blackadder — an anti-hero portrayed by actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson, not so much. In the popular sitcom Blackadder, Edmund and his descendants surface throughout Britain’s history, in respective series set in medieval, Elizabethan (left), Georgian and World War I eras, where as coward or cad they lower the level of nobility with an assortment of cunning plans and misfortunes — and smelly servant Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson. In Series I (“The Black Adder”), starting this month, Edmund, Duke of Edinburgh, is the much-despised younger son of fi ctitious King Richard IV (Brian Blessed). Haunted by his uncle Richard III (Peter Cook) whom he killed by mistake, Edmund lurks in the castle corridors of power, scheming to get the better of his elder brother, Harry. Miranda Sundays at 8:30 p.m., beginning November 18 Based on the semi-autobiographical writing of actress, writer and stand-up comedian Miranda Hart and her work in the BBC radio program Miranda Hart’s Joke Shop, the popular television series Miranda — now in a third season of production in Britain — is an acclaimed BBC sitcom about a social misfi t. Miranda stands more than six feet tall, gets called “Sir” a bit too often, and fi nds social situations awkward, especially with men. She is a constant disappointment to her mother, who is desperate for her to get a proper job and a husband. Miranda owns (and lives above) her own joke shop but lacks any real capacity for business. A next-door restaurant employs a chef who is the object of Miranda’s romantic fancies. Around this background play out Miranda’s comedic misfortunes. Hart also recently appeared in the BBC series Call the Midwife as character Chummy Browne. Mr. Bean Sundays at 9:30 p.m., beginning November 11 Standing the test of time, British actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson’s lovable, bumbling buffoon, Mr. Bean, is one of the most treasured characters in television history, a true comedy TELEVISION legend with a massive worldwide fan base. Mr. Bean has kept audiences in stitches for more PUBLIC than two decades — whether comedically stuffi ng a turkey, fumbling through a meeting with royalty, or simply fi nding himself in deep water at the swimming pool. Infl uenced by the AMERICAN physical comedy of performers such as Jacques Tati, Atkinson’s character rarely speaks; the series’ humor is derived from Mr. Bean’s encounters with people and unusual situations.
