Grand Turk, South Caicos and
Salt Cay were in the direct path of
both hurricanes and suffered much
damage. Relief operations kicked in
almost immediately, including volunteers
from the other Islands and a
contingent of military from the UK,
including the HMS Ocean, which
is the only aircraft carrier and largest
operational warship in the Royal
Navy. The UK also sent huge cargo
planes of relief supplies and Blue
Haven Marina frequenter megayacht
Dorothea III and the Yacht Aid
Global Team delivered clean water
and provisions to Grand Turk as
well. Military helicopters ferried supplies
to South Caicos and Salt Cay.
Highlighting the UK’s commitment
to the Islands, over 120 military personnel
were instrumental in assisting
with post-hurricane security, reopening
the Providenciales airport and
essential government buildings, clearing
debris, repairing schools, and even
helped get Radio Turks & Caicos
running.
To aid those who suffered loss
from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the
TCI Government signed a customs
import duty exemption from October
31 to December 31 to allow residents
to apply for exemption from payment
of duty on hurricane repair supplies
including household furniture and
some kitchen appliances.
The upside of the natural disaster
is that the economy is moving
forward with the extra clean-up and
repair work required. This provides
employment through all levels, from
landscaping and construction laborers
to contractors, builders, tradespeople,
architects and, of course, building
supply stores.
As well, TCI’s deep-rooted sense
of community formed over generations
was revealed. Helping hands
were abundant, from cooking and
