POEM CORNER
A Robin’s Song
Poem donated by David Garrett
As I toil among the trees and shrubs
A little bird the cold’s defied
For as the spade cuts through the winter’s soil
There’s a robin by my side,
The head lies over to one side
Trusting eyes look up at me
As if to say, please hurry up
‘I’m hungry, can’t you see,’
It hops about the fresh turned soil
And feasts on many things
Its head looks down with tail up high
With an occasional flutter of tiny wings,
The sweet song of the robin
Even in winter’s darkest days
Is a song so beautiful to hear
You cannot help but sing its praise,
It throws right back its tiny head,
Sticks out the bright red breast
The plaintive notes produced as thus
Makes robin a very special guest,
The nest they build on ivy clad wall
Or in a shed in corner dark
To raise a brood of hungry young
Their selves to life embark
They are our friends all through the year
A loyal and faithful thing,
Though I love the thrush and blackbird
I stop all I’m doing, to hear the robin sing
