HUSQVARNA PATTAYA LOOKING FOR A GOOD HIGH SEASON 

In the world of grade-A motorbikes the name 

Husqvarna has been a standout for more than 

a century. In Pattaya, the Husqvarna brand 

has been available for a few years but in recent 

times the showroom has moved to a far more 

prominent location, just off Motorway 7 on the 

eastern side of Sukhumvit Road. 

The owner of the Husqvarna Motorcyles Thailand 

shop in Pattaya is Roy Fu, and he is also 

the main importer of Husqvarna Motorcyles to 

Thailand. Being based in Pattaya is a major 

plus for the city. The Husqvarna logo is easily 

spotted by drivers coming in to the city via the 

main motorway: just look to the left before hitting 

Sukhumvit Road and it’s prominently displayed. 

The original shop was at the junction of South 

Pattaya Road and the small private slip road 

which cuts off Sukhumvit Road at south Pattaya. 

It’s clear that Husqvarna needed to move to 

bigger and better premises, and this is what 

they have done. 

All Husqvarna motorbikes have to be imported, 

so they are more expensive than the average 

bike, but then again, riding a Husqvarna is not 

really about a riding just a ‘bike’, it’s about being 

part of a lifestyle. Owning and riding a Husqvarna 

is akin to a motorised version of a fashion statement. 

In some ways, if you have to ask how 

much a Husqvarna costs, then you’re asking 

the wrong question. 

Arguably there are two kinds of people who ride 

motorbikes. The first are those who have them 

as a cheap and convenient form of transport, as 

evidenced by the thousands which can be seen 

every day across the highways and byways of 

Thailand. 

The second group are genuine motorbike enthusiasts: 

those who love the perceived freedom 

and adventurous utility as well as the sleek lines 

and high mechanical performance capabilities 

of the very best two-wheeled dream machines 

from around the world. 

The Husqvarna brand started in 1903. It makes 

the Swedish product the oldest motorcycle 

manufacturer with an uninterrupted production 

cycle in the world. From the outset, Husqvarna 

was associated with quality and speed. 

After the Second World War (1939-1945), a 

new form of motorcycle sport became popular 

in post-war Europe - christened ‘Moto-cross’ in 

Belgium. By 1953 races were being organised 

across Europe, with the lightweight and easyto-adapt 

single-cylinder Husqvarna road bikes 

fast became a popular choice for off-road use. 

In 1955 the iconic Silverpilen, which means 

‘silver arrow’ in Swedish, was a pioneering 

Husqvarna model, purpose-built for off-road use. 

Nimble and weighing just 75kg, the telescopic 

fork, hydraulic dampers and frame-mounted 

engine were revolutionary at the time. 

During the 1960s and 1970s, Husqvarna enjoyed 

great popularity as off-road motorcycling was 

booming. Husqvarna became the dominant 

force in World Motocross. 

Husqvarna’s popularity spread beyond the offroad 

scene and by the late 1970‘s the motorcycle 

manufacturer was in corporate demand. Between 

1977 and 2007 Husqvarna was bought, 

first by one of Sweden’s largest corporations, 

Electrolux, and then by BMW. 

In 2014, Husqvarna Motorcycles returned to its 

origins with state-of-the-art technology and the 

iconic Swedish blue, yellow and white colour 

-scheme. The return to the classic white, blue 

and yellow body work was received enthusiastically 

across the globe, highlighted by record 

unit sales and annual turnover.

TAXES TO BE LEVIED ON 

E-BUSINESS FROM THIS YEAR 

The director-general of the Revenue 

Department recently announced 

that the government is 

set to introduce a draft bill to the 

parliament which will introduce 

an e-business tax, which will be a 

levy on any transaction that takes 

place inside Thailand, no matter 

where the e-commerce operator 

happens to be located. 

The levy is expected to be set at 

a maximum of 15 percent but, as 

the director-general noted, the 

rate will vary depending on the 

nature of the business. 

The government has recognised 

that people are purchasing goods 

online in increasing numbers and 

much of this is coming from overseas 

operators who do not have 

a physical presence in Thailand. 

Concomitantly, the Finance Ministry 

has noted a drop in revenue 

from traditional sellers and it is 

therefore seeking ways to redress 

the imbalance. 

The Revenue Department said 

the draft bill will put the onus on 

financial institutions, which currently 

act as the intermediaries 

for money transfers, to withhold 

tax for online purchases and advertising 

fees on social media 

networks, sending the collections 

to the department. 

The idea is to create a more level 

playing field between the online 

world and traditional bricks and 

mortar operations. As the director-general 

pointed out, there are 

several online businesses which 

earn revenue out of customers 

living in Thailand, but they are not 

subject to tax. 

The Revenue Department estimates 

the value of online purchases 

to be currently in the 

trillions of baht with online advertising 

estimated to be worth about 

10 billion baht. 

The draft bill has been designed 

to supersede the double-tax 

agreement, which states that 

those who are liable for tax payments 

in any country must have 

a permanent physical presence in 

those locations. 

The draft bill on e-business tax 

will also annul the current valueadded 

tax (VAT) exemption for 

online shopping on goods worth 

less than 1,500 baht and were 

purchased from foreign vendors 

outside of Thailand. The plan appears 

to be aimed at making all 

online purchases subject to tax. 

At the present time only goods 

purchased outside Thailand to a 

value of 1,500 baht or more are 

subject to the seven percent VAT. 

It is probably no surprise that 

online shopping for goods worth 

1,500 baht or less from overseas 

vendors has become a popular 

activity and the Revenue Department 

has recognised that this is 

unfair to local bricks and mortar 

businesses which must charge 

VAT on all products, regardless of 

the sale price. 

The e-business tax will simply 

redress this imbalance. 




THAILAND BUSINESS NEWS 

Brooks Entwistle, chief business officer of Uber 

Asia-Pacific was quoted as saying, “We are focused 

on working with the regulator to get the 

rights for [a] ride-sharing service over time.” 

Thailand rewarded for improvement in IP 

protection 

Following a special review, Thailand has been 

deemed to have improved its intellectual property 

protection to the extent that the United 

States has taken the country off its Priority 

Watch List of IP violators. The Priority Watchlist 

was reserved for countries that offered poor 

IP protection and listed about 12 countries. The 

US has recognized the efforts that Thailand has 

made in increasing its protection of IP and has 

upgraded it to the next tier. 

US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, 

was quoted as saying in a statement, ”A key 

objective of the Trump Administration’s trade 

policy is ensuring that US owners of intellectual 

property (IP) have a full and fair opportunity to 

use and profit from their IP around the globe”, 

adding, ”The key to promoting innovation is 

protecting intellectual property. We welcome the 

corrective actions that Thailand has taken and 

look forward to continuing to work with Thailand 

to resolve our remaining IP concerns.” 

In previous years, Thailand has worked to crack 

down on piracy and IP violations focusing not 

only on movies, software and music but also 

on tangible fake goods such as perfumes, cosmetics, 

handbags, clothes and other items that 

have famous brands associated with them. 

UberTaxi service launched to help taxi drivers 

win more customers 

UberTaxi will be launched to help taxi drivers 

improve their earnings. The partnership is between 

the operator of Suvarnabhumi Taxi Cooperative, 

Howa International and Uber Thailand 

and is a legal tie up. 

Uber is looking more and more to partner with 

local taxi companies in the Asia Pacific region in 

order to ensure that it is not in direct competition 

with existing taxi providers. 

In Bangkok there are more than 80,000 taxis 

but they are only used by paying customers 

around 50 per cent of the time with the remainder 

of their time taken up standing idle at 

taxi stands or roaming the streets for the next 

client. UberTaxi expects to increase utilization 

by better connecting potential customers with 

available taxis in the area. 

Honda hybrid motorcycles to arrive in 

Thailand in 2018 

The Thai distributor of Honda, AP Honda, 

expects to introduce hybrid motorcycles into 

the local market during 2018. 

The Japanese parent companyunveiled the 

Honda PCX Hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show. 

Also shown was PCX Electric. 

AP Honda’s vice-president, Suchart Arunsaengroj 

was quoted as saying, “We haven’t 

decided whether we will produce the vehicles 

locally in Lat Krabang or import them from 

Japan, as the retail price is not set yet.” 

APHonda can import with no tariffs under the 

Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement. 

The company is also discussing with the 

government ways to increase end user demand 

for hybrid and electric motorbikes, even 

though they generally have higher prices than 

their petrol counterparts.

Trend 1: Exponential growth 

in computing power is fueling 

massive tech advances 

None of this incredible growth in 

data, nor the billions of IoT devices 

available, would be possible without 

the enormous leaps in computing 

power that we’ve made. Between 

1975 and 2015, computing power 

doubled at a rate of every two 

years, before slowing to the current 

rate of approximately every two 

and a half years. 

But we’re reaching the limits of 

what traditional computing power 

can handle. However, the latest 

quantum computing will see computers 

become millions of times 

faster than they are right now. 

Trend 2: The incredible rise of 

artificial intelligence (AI) 

Computers are now able to learn 

in much the same way as we humans 

do, and this leap in AI capabilities 

has been made possible 

by the massive increases in data 

and computing power. It’s the incredible 

explosion in data that has 

allowed AI to advance so quickly 

over the last couple of years; the 

more data an AI system has, the 

quicker it can learn and the more 

accurate it becomes. 

This huge step forward in AI mean 

computers can now undertake 

more and more human tasks. In 

fact, it’s AI that allows computers 

to see (e.g. facial recognition soft- 

ware), read (e.g. analyzing social 

media messages), listen (e.g. Alexa 

standing by to answer your every 

command), speak (e.g. Alexa being 

able to answer you) and gauge 

our emotions (e.g. affective computing). 

Trend 3: 3D printing opens up 

amazing opportunities for manufacturers 

(and others) 

Related to increasing automation, 

the invention of 3D printing 

is disrupting manufacturing, and 

other industries, in many positive 

ways. In traditional (subtractive) 

manufacturing, objects are cut or 

hollowed out of material, such as 

metal, using something like a cutting 

tool. But in 3D printing (also 

known as additive manufacturing), 

the object is created by laying 

down, or adding, layers of material. 

The materials used in 3D printing 

can be pretty much anything: plastic, 

metal, concrete, liquid, powder, 

even chocolate or human tissue! 

With 3D printing, far more complex 

shapes can be created than in 

traditional manufacturing – and 

using less material, too. It also 

allows for much greater customization 

of products, without worrying 

about economies of scale. 

Trend 4: Platforms are the way 

forward for businesses 

A platform is essentially a network 

(digital or physical) that creates 

value for participants by facilitating 

connections and exchanges 

between people for services, products 

or information. The platform is 

rarely the actual service provider; 

instead, it acts as a facilitator for 

the crowd, making interactions 

possible, easy, and safe for participants. 

Platforms have given rise to businesses 

like Airbnb, Uber and Amazon, 

and are also the foundation 

of what Facebook and Twitter do. 

However, platforms offer growth 

opportunities across all kinds of 

businesses, industries and sectors

more traditional business models, 

like Ford, are beginning to develop 

platform strategies.

of providing the defining answer 

to many economic, social and political 

questions, they are certainly

Bangkok ranks at 34 in Global 

Power City Index 

The Global Power City Index is 

an annual report produced by 

the Institute for Urban Strategies. 

First published in 2008, the Power 

Index ranks 44 major world cities 

according to their ability to attract 

creative individuals and businesses 

from around the world. There are 

70 indicators used. 

Bangkok ranked pretty low on the 

scale at 34, although well ahead 

of Mumbai (39) and Jakarta (40) 

and just behind Kuala Lumpur 

(32) and Taipei (33). 

No surprises that of Southeast 

Asian nations, Singapore ranked 

5th, with ‘daylight’ (Kuala Lumpur) 

second. The best cities are London, 

New York, Tokyo and Paris with 

Seoul at number six and Hong 

Kong seventh.

Thailand loves video and computer 

games

was according to the Newzoo 

Global Games Market Report, 

published in April 2017. 

The revenue from Thailand was 

estimated to be around US$597 

million from its approximately 32 

million Internet-connected population. 

By contrast, China, not 

unexpectedly given its massive 

population, leads the way ahead 

of Japan, South Korea and Australia 

in the Asia-Pacific marketplace. 

Streaming not downloading

The Economist Intelligence Unit 

produces the Safe Cities Index 

which ranks 60 cities in the

QATAR AIRWAYS TO START FLIGHTS TO U-TAPAO AIRPORT 

The Middle Eastern airline, Qatar Airways will 

start non-stop services from its hub in Doha 

direct to U-tapao airport starting in January 

2018. This will bring tourists closer to Pattaya 

and the eastern seaboard with the travel time 

from U-tapao airport to the resort city being only 

40 minutes as compared to 90 minutes or more 

from Suvanhabumi airport. 

Services will be frequent starting at four flights 

per week using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with 

232 economy seats and 22 business class 

seats. 

The airline plans to offer the most coverage 

of the Kingdom as compared to its Middle Eastrivals 

and the U-tapao service comes after a 

recently started Doha to Chiang Mai direct 

service, which commenced in Dec 2017. 

Whilst it may seem that the target market is 

tourists from the Middle East, Qatar’s Doha 

hub is the connection point for many flights that 

arrive from various European destinations, including 

London, Paris and Moscow. With the 

latter in mind, Qatar Airways sees potential for 

its Russian customers many of whom come to 

Thailand with the express intention of visiting 

Pattaya. 

Qatar Airways group chief executive, Akbar Al 

Baker, suggested that Pattaya is one of Southeast 

Asia’s leading destinations. 

Currently U-tapao is serving the tourist resort 

of Pattaya by welcoming low cost flights from 

places such as China and Korea. Qatar Airlines 

will be the first five star airline to connect 

directly with U-tapao airport. That’s not to say 

its rivals are not interested. Quite the contrary. 

Emirates based in Dubai has also been looking 

at running direct flights to U-tapao but has not 

yet established a route. Etihad Airways is the 

other Middle Easternairline that competes for 

European and Russian travellers and has its 

base in Abu Dhabi. 

The inclusion of the Doha to Chiang Mai and 

Doha to U-tapao routes means that Qatar is 

now flying directly to five destinations in Thailand. 

The airline has frequent flights to Bangkok 

with 35 flights per week and also to Phuket 

with 14 flights per week. A daily flight to Krabi 

has also recently been launched. The Chiang 

Mai route will be served 4 times per week. 

On the Russian end of the route, St Petersburg 

was added to give Russians an extra point of 

access to the airline’s growing network. 

As time progresses U-tapao is likely to attract 

more airlines to serve not only the Pattaya 

market but also Koh Samet island and the 

beach resorts in Rayong province, Chantaburi 

and Trat, opening the way for a new gold coast 

to develop.

Class action is a case procedure 

that allows a large number of 

people or a group of plaintiffs with 

the same rights deriving from the 

same facts and legal principle to 

present a complaint to the Court. 

The Court, therefore, passes a 

judgment showing the rights of 

the plaintiff and the members of 

the class. 

In Ordinary Action, the interested 

person must join as the party in 

a case or interplead to be a party 

in the case after the Plaintiff has 

filed the lawsuit. The interested 

person must appear in the court 

procedure themselves or authorize 

a representative to appear in 

the court procedure, which then 

has corresponding expenses and 

complications. 

On the other hand, Class action 

only needs the representative 

of the class of persons to be 

the Plaintiff on behalf of a large 

number of injured parties. Consequently, 

it is more convenient 

than the ordinary action. All the 

class members shall be bonded 

with the court judgment. In case 

a member does not want to be 

bonded with the judgment, he/she 

can show the intention to opt-out 

of the class action within the prescribed 

period. A person who opted-out 

has the right to file a separate 

lawsuit and pursue individual 

claims. Moreover, he/she cannot 

file a motion to intervene or join as 

a plaintiff in the class action. 

According to the Thailand Civil 

Procedure Code, where there are 

numerous members of a class, 

the plaintiff, who is a member of 

the class, may request for a class 

action on the following cases: 

1. Tort cases; 

2. Breach of contract cases; and 

3. Cases claiming various legal 

rights such as the law concerning 

the environment, the protection 

of consumers, labour, stocks and 

stock markets, trade competition. 

The court may allow a case to 

proceed as a Class Action in the 

following conditions: 

1. The nature of the claim and of 

relief applied for, as well as the 

allegation on which the plaintiff’s 

claim is based and of the class 

with the same characteristics as 

the plaintiff. 

2. The plaintiff has demonstrated 

the same unique characteristics 

of the class which are sufficiently 

clear for the class to be acknowledged. 

3. The class is so numerous that 

it will be more complicated and

is set to sell a majority stake to 

Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) 

for about US$361 million, as the

OldTown Berhad, which has 232

the Asia-focused PYN Elite Fund‘s 

first investment in a Vietnamese 

bank. With a total portfolio value 

of 417 million euros, PYN Elite 

Fund is now the third largest foreign

Myanmar 

According to Reuters, Myanmar 

will delay a long-awaited reform 

that would open the door further to 

foreign investment, a move likely 

to disappoint cash-starved businesses 

amid growing doubts over 

the management of the economy 

by the country’s leader, Aung San 

Suu Kyi. 

The postponement of the corporate 

reform, which would have 

allowed foreign companies to take 

up to a 35 percent stake in Myanmar 

companies, will likely deal a 

fresh blow to investor confidence 

in Suu Kyi’s administration. Economic 

reform is a key goal for her 

to complete Myanmar’s democratic 

transition. The delay underscores 

the daunting challenge 

facing Suu Kyi, whose promise of 

a reformist government that would 

attract foreign investment is under 

threat.

2018 CYBER SECURITY PREDICTIONS 

2017, cyber criminals will focus on this method 

in 2018. 

shift their security programs to be IaaS effective. 

This past year, cyber criminals caused major 

service disruptions around the world, using 

their increasing technical proficiency to break 

through cyber defenses. In 2018, we expect the 

trend to become more pronounced as these attackers 

will use machine learning and artificial 

intelligence to launch even more potent attacks. 

Gear up for a busy year ahead. Incidents like 

the WannaCry attack, which impacted more 

than 200,000 computers worldwide in May, are 

just the warmup to a new year of more virulent 

malware and DDoS attacks. Meanwhile, cyber 

criminals are poised to step up their attacks on 

the millions of devices now connected to the 

Internet of Things both in offices and homes. 

The cybersecurity landscape in 2018 is sure to 

surprise us in ways that we never imagined. As 

2017 draws to a close, here is what you can 

expect over the course of the upcoming year: 

Blockchain Will Find Uses Outside Of Cryptocurrencies 

But Cyber criminals Will Focus On 

Coins and Exchanges 

Blockchain is finally finding applications outside 

of crypto-currencies, expanding its functions in 

inter-bank settlements with the help of IoT gaining 

traction. However, these use cases are still 

in their infancy stage and are not the focus for 

most cyber criminals today. Instead of attacking 

Blockchain technology itself, cyber criminals 

will focus on compromising coin-exchanges 

and users’ coin-wallets since these are the easiest 

targets, and provide high returns. Victims 

will also be tricked into installing coin-miners on 

their computers and mobile devices, handing 

their CPU and electricity over to cyber criminals. 

Cyber criminals Will Use Artificial Intelligence 

(AI) & Machine Learning (ML) To Conduct Attacks 

No cyber security conversation today is complete 

without a discussion about AI and ML. So 

far, these conversations have been focused on 

using these technologies as protection and detection 

mechanisms. However, this will change 

in the next year with AI and ML being used by 

cyber criminals to conduct attacks. It is the first 

year where we will see AI versus AI in a cybersecurity 

context. Cyber criminals will use AI to 

attack and explore victims’ networks, which is 

typically the most labour-intensive part of compromise 

after an incursion. 

Supply Chain Attacks Will Become Mainstream 

Supply chain attacks have been a mainstay of 

the classical espionage and signals-intelligence 

operators, compromising upstream contractors/ 

systems/companies and suppliers. They are 

proven to have a high-level of effectiveness, 

with nation-state actors using a mix of human 

intelligence to compromise the weakest link in 

the chain. These attacks are moving into the 

cybercriminal space, becoming mainstream. 

With publicly available information on suppliers, 

contractors, partnerships and key-people, cyber 

criminals can find victims in the supply chain 

and attack the weakest link. With a number 

of high profile successful attacks in 2016 and 


File-less and File-light Malware Will Explode 

2016 and 2017 have seen consistent growth in 

the amount of file-less and file-light malware, 

with attackers capitalising organizations that 

lack in preparation against such threats. With 

fewer Indicators of Compromise (IoC), use of 

the victims’ own tools, and complex disjointed 

behaviours, these threats have been harder to 

stop, track and defend against in many scenarios. 

Like the early days of ransomware, where 

early success by a few cyber criminals triggered 

a gold-rush like mentality, more cyber criminals 

are now rushing to use these same techniques. 

Although file-less and file-light malware will still 

be outnumbered by orders-of-magnitude as 

traditional style malware, they will pose a significant 

threat and lead to an explosion in 2018. 

Organisations Will Still Struggle With Securityas-a-Service 

(SaaS) Security 

Adoption of SaaS continues to grow at an exponential 

rate as organizations embark on digital 

transformation projects to drive business agility. 

This rate of change and adoption presents 

many security challenges as access control, 

data control, user behaviour and data encryption 

vary significantly between SaaS apps. 

While this is not new and many of the security 

problems are well understood, organizations 

will continue to struggle with all these in 2018. 

Combined with new privacy and data protections 

laws adopted by regulators across the 

world, these will pose major implications in 

terms of penalties, and more importantly, reputational 

damage. 

Organisations Will Still Struggle With Infrastructure-as-a-Service 

(IaaS) Security – More 

Breaches Due to Error, Compromise & Design 

IaaS has completely changed the way organisations 

run their operations, offering massive 

benefits in agility, scalability, innovation and 

security. It also introduces significant risks, with 

simple errors that can expose massive amount 

of data and take down the entire system. While 

security controls above the IaaS layer are customer’s 

responsibility, traditional controls do 

not map well – leading to confusion, errors and 

design issues with ineffective or inappropriate 

controls being applied, while new controls 

are ignored. This will lead to more breaches 

throughout 2018 as organizations struggle to

Losses Than Ransomware 

Financial Trojans were some of the first pieces 

of malware to be monetised by cyber criminals. 

From simple beginnings as credential 

harvesting tools, they have since evolved to 

advanced attack frameworks that target multiple 

banks, and banking systems that send 

shadow transactions and hide their tracks. 

They have proven to be highly profitable for 

cyber criminals. Today the move to mobile application-based 

banking has curtailed some of 

the effectiveness, so cyber criminals are now 

moving their attacks to these platforms. Cyber 

criminals’ profits from Financial Trojans is expected 

to grow, giving them higher gains as 

compared to Ransomware attacks. 

Expensive Home Devices Will Be Held To 

Ransom 

Ransomware has become a major problem 

and is one of the scourges of the modern Internet, 

allowing cyber criminals to reap huge 

profits by locking up users’ files and systems. 

The gold-rush mentality has not only pushed 

more and more cyber criminals to distribute 

ransomware, but also contributed to the rise 

of Ransomware-As-A-Service and other specializations 

in the cyber criminal underworld. 

These specialists are now looking to expand 

their attack reach by exploiting the massive increase 

in expensive connected home devices. 

Smart TVs, smart toys and other smart appliances 

can run into thousands of dollars and 

users are generally not aware of the threats to 

these devices, making them an attractive target 

for cyber criminals. 

IoT Devices Will Be Hijacked and Used in 

DDoS Attacks 

In 2017, we have seen massive DDoS attacks 

using hundreds of thousands of compromised 

IoT devices in people’s homes and workplaces 

to generate traffic. This is not expected to 

change with cyber criminals looking to exploit 

the poor security settings and management 

of home IoT devices. Furthermore, the inputs 

and sensors of these devices will also be hijacked, 

with attackers feeding audio, visual or 

other faked inputs to make these devices do 

what they want rather than what users expect 

them to do. 

IoT Devices Will Provide Persistent Access to 

Home Networks 

Beyond DDoS attacks and ransomware, 

home IoT devices will be compromised by 

cyber criminals to provide persistent access 

to a victim’s network. Home users generally 

do not consider the cyber security implications 

of their home IoT devices, leaving default settings 

and not vigilantly updating them like they 

do with their computers. Persistent access 

means that no matter how many times a victim 

cleans their machine or protects their computer, 

the attacker will always have a backdoor 

into victims’ network and the systems that they 

connect to.

THAILAND’S HOTEL OCCUPANCY RATES EXPECTED TO INCREASE 

According to the Thai Hotels Association (THA), 

and ahead of some key reports, the hotel business 

in Thailand is expected to have grown in 

the last year by 5-7 per cent, despite some pull 

backs in October 2017. 

Occupancy rates are also expected to have 

shown a rise during the last year with the average 

rate likely to be between 70 per cent and 

75 percent, an increase of five to seven per cent 

over the previous year. 

The average number did hide various geographic 

differences. For example hotels in the 

south are expected to post occupancy rates of 

80 per cent to 85 per cent, whereas those in the 

northeast are likely to be closer to 65 per cent. 

Bangkok occupancy rates are expected to be 

in line with the average. Pattaya is expected to 

see occupancy rates increase from 67 per cent 

to 75.1 per cent. 

The outlook is for Phuket and the south to continue 

to see strong demand and for occupancy 

rates in those areas to increase the most. 

The president of the Thai Hotels Association, 

Supawan Tanomkieatipum, was quoted as 

saying, “So far, overall hotel business will see 

growth this year. The THA expects that the 

sector will continue to grow over the next five 

years if there is no crisis.” 

Total arrivals to Thailand from January 2017 to 

October 2017 stood at 28.8 million, representing 

a 6.7% increase from the same period in the 

previous year. Arrivals from China, Malaysia, 

Laos, South Korea, India, Japan, Russia, Cambodia, 

the US and the UK made up the top ten 

source markets. 

The governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, 

Yuthasak Supasorn, was quoted as saying, 

“With the launch in November of the TAT’s new 

‘Amazing Thailand Tourism Year 2018’ marketing 

concept, which focuses on segments like 

sports, gastronomy, weddings and honeymoons 

[and] luxury and community-based tourism, 

we’re confident of even higher visitor growth.” 

There is not only a focus on international tourists. 

Indeed domestic tourism grew quite dramatically 

in the period. Thais made a total of 

110 million trips within Thailand, a 6.3 per cent 

increase on the same period in the previous 

year. This generated 695 billion baht in tourist 

related revenue out of a total of 2.26 trillion 

baht when taking into account international 

tourists. Domestic tourism helped to boost 

hotel occupancy rates. 

It was noted that there is still over supply in 

the major markets of Pattaya, Bangkok and 

Phuket, but that this supply is likely to be gradually 

utilized going forward. This could lead 

to higher hotel prices in the years to come as 

rooms become harder to find in key resorts. 

For now, however, Thailand provides hotels 

that are of generally high quality and still the 

best value for money compared to many other 

countries.

against the Thai baht, but you would be unlikely 

to secure that spot rate at exchange booths. 

Spreads at currency exchange booths could 

remain higher than normal due to Brexit uncertainty 

for some time to come. 

The USD/JPY cross rate moved from 113.10 

to 111.10 and then crawled all the way back to 

its start position, settling in a range of 112.70 

to 113.40.Against the Thai Baht,the Yen faired 

worse due to Baht strength and any of the 

gains later in the period have been all but 

wiped out. 1 yen fetchedas low as 0.2868Thai 

Baht, continuing to mark multi-year lows and 

still substantially below the 0.3000 psychologically 

important level for the market. 

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE 

The dollar has weakened in the last few weeks 

by about 1.5 per cent. The DXY Dollar index, 

(an index that measures the US Dollar’s valueagainst 

a basket of other currencies), has fallen 

from a high of 95.1 to drop to a low of 92.8 

before recovering to 93.4. At the same time the 

Thai baht has seen its own strength and is at 

its strongest in several years. It moved from 

32.90 to the USD to 32.44. Baht strength may 

continue as momentum builds, but if history 

is anything to go by, any moves will likely be 

gradual. 

The British Pound has been quite volatile of late 

driven by Brexit news events amongst other 

economic data. However, the moves have been 

broadly positive for the British currency rising 

from 1.3090 to hit 1.3520 before settling in a 

range from 1.3320 to 1.3450. 

Against the Thai Baht the spot rate dipped then 

peaked and in the end returned to just above 

previous levels with the Thai baht’s strength 

negating any eventual Sterling gains. The currency 

remains in the range of 43.40 to 43.85 

The Russian Ruble has remained relatively 

stable against the US Dollar, moving between 

58.8 and 59.4, a new range that is slightly 

higher than the previous one by about 0.5 per 

cent.When compared to the Thai Baht, the 

Ruble has also remained relatively stable in a 

range of 0.5570 to 0.5500, but the bottom end 

of this range shows that the Russian currency 

has lost some ground. 

The Euro/USD rate has fluctuated quite wildly 

between 1.1700 and 1.2020, but the currency 

has really gone nowhere for the last month 

resting at around 118.20, close to its start 

point. The currency appears to be well bid 

and remains within 3 per cent of its recent 

high of 1.2100, but fresh catalysts will likely be 

required for a push back to that high and beyond. 

Against the Thai Baht, the Euro fell from 

39 to 38.37 mirroring the Thai baht’s strength 

against other currencies.
