THE RED TURTLE
This charming Studio
Ghibli production follows
a shipwrecked man on a
deserted island. The wordless
animation is directed by
Dutch animator Michaël
Dudok de Wit and supervised
under Studio Gibli’s
Takahata and Toshio Suzuki.
The moving story filled
with bittersweet moments
and ethereal sequences is
meant to signify milestone
moments of the shipwrecked
man’s life. The film is a joy
to watch from beginning to
end and portrays the human
condition in a way only
Studio Ghibli can. Better
keep the tissues at hand.
AFTER THE STORM
Hirokazu Kore-eda’s family
drama tells the story of
Shinoda, a private detective
with a gambling addiction,
who uses his private eye skills
to spy on his ex-wife and her
new partner while also trying
to reconnect with his young
son following the death of
his own father. All this takes
place in the midst of a typhoon
brewing.
THE HANDMAIDEN
This provocative psychological thriller features a mesmerising
narrative where an event is witnessed from multiple perspectives,
each one revealing even more eyebrow raising truths than the last.
Originally inspired by Sarah Walter’s novel, Fingersmith, that
was set in Victorian era England, The Handmaiden is adapted into
a Korean setting set in the 1930s when it was under Japanese rule.
It’s a tale full of deceit, seduction and mind-games and breathtaking
cinematography.
Language: Japanese, Korean
Starring: Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, Ha Jung-woo and Cho Jin-woong
MANHUNT
This police crime thriller by
master of action cinema John
Woo is a cinematic, almost
parody-like, action-packed film
that will be familiar to fans of
the Hong Kong director’s work.
Set in Osaka, Japan and based
on the Japanese novel Kimi
yo Fundo no Kawa o Watare
by Juko Nishimura, the movie
stars Zhang Hanyu as a Chinese
lawyer who is framed for
crimes that he didn’t commit.
Similar to Woo’s previous
work, there’s plenty of plot
twists and over-the-top action
that’s bound to keep you on the
edge of your seats.
Language: Japanese, English and
Mandarin
Starring: Zhang Hanyu,
Masaharu Fukuyama, Qi Wei,
