School’s long wait over
Redcliffs
School
principal
Rose
McInerney
talks
about how
it felt to
hear Education Minister
Hekia Parata announce
the school would remain
open
It’s quite hard to explain the
feelings of an interminable
wait that was finally coming to
an end.
The Redcliffs board of
trustees had now had quite a
few meetings with Minister
Hekia Parata to meaningfully
engage on the importance of
our school remaining open but
this was to be the mother of all
meetings.
So much preparation had
gone into what this day would
reveal and there was a strong
weight of responsibility in my
heart and I’m certain in the
hearts of those with me.
Half of the board – Kent
France, Mark Robberds, Steph
Grieve and I met at the airport
bright and early and ready to
go. We faced the very interested
media with our ongoing
positive approach to how well
we had problem solved the
Minister’s concerns and felt
hopeful for a change in decision
for the Redcliffs School
community. This issue had
now reached out to all New
Zealanders and we knew many
had a deep interest in what
Thursday’s result would be.
We travelled to Wellington
leaving our children in the
confident and professional
hands of our staff and the other
half of the board of trustees.
They carried on their school
day as normally as they possibly
could, while we boarded
our flight with the promise of
any news coming straight to
them the minute that we had
it. So much invested in this
process and so many people
willing us to have good news
for our community’s future.
On arrival in Wellington
we taxied to Parliament, had
a quick coffee, and again were
met by more media going in to
the Beehive.
We announced our arrival
at reception and sat down to
have our last chat about our
approach for the two potential
outcomes. So much time
had been given to this final
submission and it was truly
crunch time.
Before long we were welcomed
into the Minister’s
office with her large team of
advisers and we waited for
Minister Parata’s response
with baited breath.
While we had been banking
on a positive decision when it
actually came through there
were enormous hugs both in
Wellington and soon after in
Christchurch.
A united team of problem
solving, invested, tenacious,
determined individuals had
come together and saved our
Redcliffs School from closure.
A feeling I will never forget
and so proud to share in that
piece of very important history.
Massive effort
pays off
Green MP
Eugenie
Sage says the
Redcliffs School
decision was
great news
Congratulations
to everyone in the
Redcliffs School community for the
sustained and successful advocacy
to keep Redcliffs School as a local
school. Standing up for what you
believe in helps create change in
politics.
Overturning Education Minister
Hekia Parata’s interim decision last
November that Redcliffs School
would close by the end of this year
has taken a massive effort. It has
involved inspired leadership from
the school board of trustees, a determined
effort by parents, energy
from students and creative engagement
with the media and the wider
community.
The Minister’s decision will
ensure that Redcliffs School, either
on the Main Rd site or another site
such as Barnett Park, remains the
hub of its community.
Elsewhere in education, the news
has been less welcome. In a surprise
Budget move, the Government decided
to freeze funding for schools’
operational grants.
This means there will be more
pressure on parents to “donate”
even more for their children’s education.
This puts quality education
under strain and erodes the right to
a free education.
Operational funding goes into
essentials such as heating, computers
for students, learning support,
property maintenance, and relief
teachers.
We need regular funding increases
to keep up with increased
costs. Between 2010 and 2014
parents forked out $791.3 million to
subsidise their children’s education
with donations.
Redcliffs School Fair is one of
the largest and most successful in
Christchurch in raising funds to
help students learn. Lower decile
schools will suffer the most, as
their ability to fundraise is more
constrained.
As well as protecting the right of
students to be able to attend their
local neighbourhood school, we
need to ensure that funding for
education keeps up with inflation.
