Waters writes about
historical figures visiting
the classroom for a lesson
in New Zealand’s past
HISTORIC New Zealanders that
are on our bank notes came to
visit our pupils on Wednesday.
We had a visit from the wonderful
Claire at Rutherford’s Den
and she bought with her three
famous New Zealanders – Ernest
Rutherford, Kate Sheppard and
Apirana Ngata.
The children had an interactive
morning learning about historic
moments and the people behind
them.
They learned about Ernest Rutherford,
his Nobel Prize and all
about the atom; they completed
some weaving and mapped out to
scale a Maori kite with Apirana
Ngata; and stepped into Kate
Sheppard’s wardrobe to try on
her biking bloomers.
They also tried on a graduate
gown and experienced what
holding a Nobel Prize was like.
Along the way, they joined in
with the history by signing the
petition for women to vote with
a calligraphy pen and checked
gravity was still working.

The pupils had a great morning,
which I hope gave them
some inspiration to put their own
mark on the world.
AIR TIME: Heathcote Valley Primary School pupils will travel
to Hokitika after being named one of the winners of the
Air New Zealand Airpoints for Schools competition. The
class met a target of 1920 airpoints to be one of 10 schools
nationwide to go on a class trip by plane. The pupils will
travel to Hokitika to monitor and compare new spawning
grounds for whitebait as part of a new initiative, Whaka
Inaka: Causing Whitebait, which has been created through
EOS Ecology, DOC and the University of Canterbury.
Learning to grow food
DIAMOND Harbour Primary
School has joined a nationwide
initiative to experience both
growing and cooking their own
produce within their school
environment.
The Garden to Table programme
encourages Kiwi kids to
learn about the process of planting
and harvesting crops.
The programme for seven to
12-year-olds has been running
for eight years and is aimed at
changing the way children approach
and think about food.
Last week Fiesta, which has
teamed up with Garden to
Table, shipped packs of their
new range of European seed potatoes
to 40 schools across New
Zealand for children to grow this
season.
