PAGE 10 BAY HARBOUR Wednesday September 28 2016 News Redcliffs School hires principal • By Annabelle Dick REDCLIFFS SCHOOL acting principal Rose McInerney will stay on at the school. Mrs McInerney has been appointed after the position was advertised recently. “I was really delighted to accept their offer at the end of the interview process. I’m really honoured and I’m thrilled to be leading our wonderful school,” she said. The board of trustees interviewed several applicants to find a principal to lead the school through the transition back to Redcliffs. Mrs McInerney (left) has been acting principal since the end of last year after former principal Kim Alexander left to take a position at Prebbleton School. As the school was under threat of closure, a permanent principal couldn’t be hired, so Mrs McInerney was appointed in the acting role for one year. “One of the reasons I went for the role is because it’s such a special community and I really believe in community schools where people work together for the best outcome. We’ve seen that in full force this year with the board and all the parents and staff working for the best for our children, and I think that’s why we got the outcome we did, because we’re such a formidable force,” she said. The news was announced via Support Redcliffs School’s Facebook page where dozens of residents and parents congratulated her on the role and credited her for her dedication to Redcliffs School. The school is currently based at Van Asch Deaf Education Centre in Sumner, but is in the process of finding a suitable premises to relocate to permanently. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN New experience at House of Travel • By Annabelle Dick HOUSE OF Travel Ferrymead has launched a new interactive agency in a bid to make the travel-booking experience more carefree. Kitted out with an espresso machine and a ceiling-high stacking shelf filled with pot plants, the new building on Ferry Rd was designed to feel more like a hang-out space than a traditional office. Part-owner Mel Hubber said the new layout is designed make people feel welcome and make sure it’s not an intimidating experience. “We decided that if we got to design our dream space it would be like going to your favourite cafe, where you’re sitting in a relaxed environment and planning your trip,” she said. House of Travel Ferrymead has wireless capability so agents can go to clients with their laptops, which have all the same systems as their office computers. “On a warm day we can even go outside with a couple of chairs and sit in the sun,” Mrs Hubber said. The original House of Travel building was badly damaged in the February 22, 2011 earthquake, and they’ve been running the business out of a Portacom building for the past 18 months. “We became an emergency office for quite some time and it was quite disheartening,” she said. Mrs Hubber said during that time they learnt the importance of how to be adaptable, which inspired the new design.
