The call for CCTV cameras is like a football at the moment – it’s being passed between the local community board and city council. Residents want a crime camera which can move from point to point in Lyttelton, with a sign in the port saying something like ‘Crime camera operating’ to let the burglars and thieves know they could be being watched. We tried to get comment from Lyttelton police for today’s Bay Harbour News. They said they were too busy - chasing burglars, we hope. But you can read on page 1 what others are saying, and our inquiries suggest progress on a much-needed crime camera is painstakingly slow. Mayor Lianne Dalziel met with the group last month and asked them to work with the city council on changing hazard information on the flawed Coastal Hazards Assessment Report. The group provided the city council with an alternative notation for LIMs after seeking legal advice but city council chief executive Dr Karleen Edwards rejected it. Dr Latham believes it was a ploy from the city council to collaborate with residents so media would get off their back. “We feel we were somewhat set up because things were getting a little hot for the mayor. The collaborative discussion hasn’t resulted in the council listening at all. We were excited and we felt it was going to be a sincere, genuine, collaborative process but that hasn’t proved to be the case,” he said. The original Tonkin & Taylor Coastal Hazards Assessment Report found 18,000 coastal homes were at risk of erosion and flooding and that information has gone on homeowner’s LIM reports. The city council legally must put the information on property records and that has devalued coastal homes, hiked insurance rates and made it difficult to get mortgages. The report was peer reviewed and the city council was urged to remove the information and undertake more research because it could be legally unsound. The notations were tweaked, but it still states those homes are at risk from coastal hazards. “How can Christchurch have faith in a chief executive and a mayor who fail to listen to what is being said in a peer reviewed report?” Dr Latham said. All city councillors voted to seek a further peer review of the original report in a meeting last week. LIM notations will be revised as new information is received by the city council, but hazard notations will remain on property reports until then. Kidsfirst initially applied for resource consent in June to run a 50-person early childhood centre next to the Mt Pleasant Community Centre but were declined due to a city council mistake. A number of homeowners are opposing the consent as it blocks their sea view and they believe it is too dangerous to build a centre on the plot of land. The hearing has been set for October 18. BLESSING FOR CENTRE The new Mt Pleasant Community Centre will be blessed prior to its official opening on October 14. Members of the public are invited to the blessing ceremony at 7am where breakfast will follow. The centre will be offically opened later that evening with a ceremony but numbers are restricted due to space. TUNNEL MAINTENANCE Lyttelton Tunnel will undergo maintenance work next week. The NZTA work will restrict transport through the tunnel and traffic will be down to a single lane. Dangerous goods will also not be allowed through the tunnel during this period. Work will go ahead between October 13, 9pm, until 3am on October 14.
