Bid to beat problem parkers
PIPE
• By Annabelle Dick
CITY COUNCIL enforcement
officers may soon be seen
more on the streets of Akaroa
ticketing motorists and dealing
with dogs breaching bylaws.
The Akaroa-Wairewa Community
Board has asked the
city council to look at providing
more officers to patrol and more
frequently.
There are no officers based in
Akaroa. They travel to and from
Akaroa but the community
board says it is too little.
Parking breaches have become
a common occurrence as people
are disregarding parking limit
signs.
Just Souvenirs owner Graeme
Tomer said he has two parking
10min signs outside his store
that are often abused, but the
cars aren’t ticketed.
“We don’t see much enforcement
at all really – definitely
not on a regular basis. I can’t
remember when I last saw an
officer,” he said.
From September 14, 2015,
to September 14, 2016, the city
council has issued 14 infringement
notices for parking offences.
Of these, four infringement
notices have been issued for the
time limit.
Akaroa-Wairewa Community
Board member Janis Haley said
the lack of enforcement was an
issue.
“There used to be someone
here who’d monitor parking but
he’s not here anymore. Some
times some of these areas need
monitoring and no matter what
signs you put up parking just
gets abused,” she said.
The board wants to see more
locally-based officers on the
ground with the ability to issue
multiple enforcement warrants.
That would include dog owners
who breached bylaws.
Community board chairwoman
Pam Richardson said
having locally-based officers
makes more sense than having
an officer commute from
Christchurch.
“Rather than having an
enforcement officer on the road
running back and forward surely
it must be far easier to look
at an innovative way of doing it
and that is local enforcement,”
ON GUARD:
Akaroa could
see more city
council officers
wandering the
streets issuing
fines for multiple
offences.
she said.
The board has asked city
council staff to see if there’s
any possibility of officers being
based locally.
Crime has also been an issue
in Akaroa. Senior Constable
Anita Osborne addressed the
community board about police
wanting a surveillance camera
installed in the township.
The community board is also
talking to city council staff
about this matter.
In Brief
REPAIRS
A section of road at 1 Simeon
Quay will be closed to replace a
stormwater pipe. Traffic will be
detoured left on to Godley Quay
and right on to Voelas Rd for
around two weeks.
ONE LANE FOR ROAD
Evans Pass Rd above Sumner
is down to one lane while a
retaining wall is repaired. SCIRT
is undertaking the work and
temporary traffic lights will be in
place. Repairs are expected to take
until the end of the year.
ARMED ROBBERY
A Woolston dairy worker was left
shaken after three people robbed
the Night ‘n Day store on Ferry Rd
at 5am, Saturday. Police are looking
for three people who entered the
dairy with weapons, including a
hammer and machete. The thieves
stole cigarettes and cash. This is
the second time the dairy has been
robbed in the last two months.
