Fair money goes
to good causes
OUR LADY Star of the Sea
held its annual Mission Day
Fair recently.
Held on the school
grounds, hundreds of residents
came down.
The pupils co-ordinated
the fair and sold secondhand
board games, books
and toys.
They also had a cake stall,
Diamond Harbour’s year
5 Korimako class had a
go at sailing. Here’s what
they had to say about
their experience
Last Monday, we went sailing
at Charteris Bay Yacht
Club. It was a beautiful day. As
we drove down, we could see
the water sparkling.
At the club, we met our
instructor Henry, and we
quickly got dressed into our
wet suits and life jackets.
Before we were allowed out
onto the water, Henry taught
barbecue, bouncy castle, fun
games and competitions.
The money raised was donated
to St Joseph’s School
in Samoa, although the
children decided to donate
half the money to St Joseph’s
School in Kaikoura so that
the pupils there could have
some fun.
The fair raised $969.
us about the parts of the optimist
boat. We learned to use
the rudder to turn and how to
use the mainsheet to control
the speed. We also learned
how to avoid the boom, which
makes exactly that sound if it
hits your head!
Once the optimists were
launched, we did follow the
leader. Elijah was set a challenge
because he was so fast.
He had to sail to the end of the
line and then come back.
After lunch, we went back
on the water to play a game
called sponge tag, which was
lots of fun. We also learned
SHIELD FEVER: Pupils at Our Lady Star of the Sea got to hold the
Ranfurly Shield on Friday. Crusaders and former Canterbury coach
Scott Robertson, whose three children attend the school, came in
and gave parents and children an opportunity to get up close and
personal with the shield. (Left) Principal John Kane took time out to
pose with pupils Darcy and Macklan.
how to capsize, which was
more fun than it sounds, as
long as you didn’t get your sail
stuck in the mud.
GET LUCKY:
Lucy
watched
over the
lucky cup
stall at the
school fair.
Learning to sail a whole lot of fun
