SAUSAGES WERE sizzling,
onions were browning
and the queue just kept on
stretching.
Ferrymead Rotarians in
hi-viz vests and Rotary caps
were barbecuing and serving
300-odd free sausages,
provided by the Redcliffs
Residents’ Association, at
the opening of the Redcliffs
portion of the Coastal
Pathway.
Several hundred people
gathered for the opening
and most couldn’t resist the
alluring smell of the cooking
sausages.
This was Ferrymead
Rotary’s contribution to the
latest section opening. The
club expects to be further
involved as the project progresses,
having offered plants
and other adornments for the
path.
Many Bay Harbour
residents are also looking
forward to another annual
Ferrymead Rotary event –
the sale of Christmas trees.
They will be on sale on
Saturday, December 10, at
Barnett Park, Redcliffs, and
in the car park opposite the
I ALWAYS find it hard to believe
that Christmas comes around
so quickly each year and with
it comes our long summer days
and good weather.
In spite of the odd quirk of
nature, we really do live in a
beautiful country.
This was brought home to
me a few weeks ago when I was
using my quad bike to go from
the Amberley beach up the
river to the highway, travelling
through the big cliffs that are
SIZZLING: Ferrymead Rotary members put on a
sausage sizzle at the Beachville Rd Coastal Pathway
opening.
Mt Pleasant Community
Centre. Tom Keeley has been
providing Christmas trees
to the club for 21 years –
almost as long as the club
has been in existence. He
cuts them on the morning
of the sale to ensure they are
nice and fresh and will last
until at least Christmas Day.
The trees range in size and
shape so there’s one to suit
everyone. Ferrymead Rotary
thousands of years old, and there
was not a soul around, the birds
were singing, we had a picnic by
the river – I am sure you get the
picture.
Going to places like that gives
me plenty of time to think, and
that can be scary sometimes. As
you have seen before, some of my
articles can be a little random,
but hopefully there is always a
message there for you.
So when you are on the water,
whether it’s in a canoe or a large
power boat, if a sign or buoy
states it’s a five knot area, it
means just that; they are not
also helped move some of
the Redcliffs Library’s books
from the temporary premises
to their new home along
Main Rd.
Children from Redcliffs
School formed a human
chain to ferry the books
along the footpath. Rotary
members moved the books
across Beachville Rd so that
the children didn’t have to
cross the street.
put there to annoy you, they are
there solely for safety reasons.
This applies to the rules
about not going faster than five
knots (around 8km/h or a fast
walking pace) when within 50m
of swimmers or other vessels,
or 200m from the shore or a
structure.
If a buoy or sign states that no
powered vessels are allowed, it
means just that, your jet ski or
powerboat cannot go there; these
areas are reserved for swimmers,
or non-powered craft so they
operate safely.
We have a huge amount of
Democracy rules
Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board member Tim
Lindley talks about his
recent induction onto
the board
It’s now five weeks since I was
inducted into the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board as a
newbie community board member for
Heathcote. It’s been a very interesting
time and three strong impressions
stand out from the buzz and busyness
of simply getting started.
First, the quality of our democratic
systems here in New Zealand. The
manuals for newly elected officials
that describe how we must conduct
ourselves are long and detailed. It
is very clear that a requirement for
‘integrity’ is just as fully enshrined in
our institutions as is the requirement
for ‘democracy.’
New Zealand always lists among the
top countries for freedom from corruption.
If you ponder on it, without
integrity, democracy becomes pretty
meaningless. I can’t help but feel very
thankful for those who have gone before
and who have made our country
become what it is.
Second, the role expected of a
community board member here in
Pirate’s Corner
people competing to use our
recreational waterways, and it’s
clear that, without some form of
rules, it would be mayhem out
there.
The simple solution is know
Christchurch. It’s a part-time position
that comes with a strong expectation
that the board member will form a
connection between community and
council. We are to get out and know
and understand groups within our
communities and, at the same time,
get up to speed on how council works
and makes plans for the future. Put
simply, our role is to help people
understand council and council
understand people, so that the actions
council takes and the plans it makes
really are in the best interests of our
city.
Third, there is a lot to be done. I
have particular interests in our estuary
and waterways; in promoting safe
and effective cycleways; and in helping
make our city a good place to live
in. It is a privilege to have been elected
and I am looking forward to the work
ahead.
Tips to keep safe on the water this summer
the rules, don’t be a prat, and
be courteous to everyone out
there so that we all get through
the summer without incident
or injury. That’s it from me this
week, be safe out there.
