Sailing around Croatia for hope
• By Annabelle Dick
LYTTELTON resident
Ingrid Robertson may have a
debilitating condition but it’s
not stopping her from sailing
Croatia’s coastline.
Ms Robertson, 50, has been
selected to take part in Sailing
Sclerosis’ Oceans of Hope – an
international sailing expedition
for people with multiple
sclerosis.
It will see her travel to Croatia
where she will sail a yacht
around the Dalmatian coast
with other people affected by
MS from around the world.
“I like proving a point to
myself that I can still do things
and not be disabled by my MS.
It’s a little bit outside of my
comfort zone because I’m going
to the other side of the world on
my own and doing something
I haven’t done in a while,” she
said.
Ms Robertson first encountered
Oceans of Hope when a
yacht came to Auckland in 2014
and she sailed around the harbour
on it for several hours.
Ever since then, she’s been
hooked and wanted to take part.
Ms Robertson was invited to
an expedition in Croatia in May
where she will be the only New
Zealander on board one of the
SETTING SAIL: Ingrid Robertson will head to Croatia to sail
the Dalmatian coast with other people affected by MS from
around the world.
10 vessels.
“There will be 10 yachts with a
crew of six on each that all have
MS,” she said.
“To me, it’s about meeting
people that have the same condition.
It will be so interesting
sharing experiences and learning
from everybody and making
new friends.”
Ms Robertson was diagnosed
with MS in 1999 at 33. She’s now
uses a walking stick for mobility.
While the condition has
DAREDEVIL: Ingrid
Robertson wants to prove a
point to herself that she can
do almost anything.
progressively affected her physically,
she still works full-time, is
on the board of directors for the
Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s
Society of Canterbury and
its research committee.
She’s also more adventurous
than most having done all sort
of daredevil-type activities.
“I’ve always been active. I’ve
done the bungy jump, I’ve
done the sky dive, I’ve been in
cars in race tracks going up to
200 km/h. I love the rush and
adrenaline,” she said.
But before Ms Robertson can
take part, she needs help financing
the trip.
Skate ramp
decision
looms
•From page 1
Nearby residents say they’ve
witnessed drinking, littering and
users purposely banging their
boards against the ramp to keep
neighbours awake.
“It’s wooden and it creates
a lot of noise. If there’s half a
dozen kids there in the evening,
it’s very loud. The local nearby
residents, we’ve got together and
we’re against it. We just want
it out of here,” Mr Gage-Smart
said.
Mrs Mossman said the
problems were related to older
teenagers coming into Sumner
in the evening when the ramp
was unlocked.
The residents’ association
agreed to unlock and lock the
ramp at 8am and 9.30pm each
day to mitigate issues.
“I get it doesn’t suit everyone
but what are kids going to be
doing if there’s no skate ramp?
These kids are really engaged
and skating is a really tough
activity. They’re a great bunch of
kids,” she said.
Young local skaters who
frequently use it wanted to see it
stay as well.
