It is important that the right information is provided so people know the facts. Upgrade of Diamond Harbour Ferry Terminal We are upgrading the existing Diamond Harbour Ferry Terminal amenities. We’re doing this at the same time as constructing a staff car park adjacent to Waterfront House, LPC’s new operations and administration building. For some time the community has asked if we could re-install stairs off the Oxford St overbridge to provide direct access to the ferry. This will reduce the walking distance to the ferry and is included in the terminal upgrade. We are working closely with Environment Canterbury to maintain the existing bus service and we will retain the dual bus stops. This will ensure there is no change for people using the 28 bus service to access the Diamond Harbour Ferry. There has never been a dedicated drop-off/ pick-up area at the wharf, and currently, people cannot drive directly to the ferry. However we are happy to provide access for people who are impaired, elderly, have young children or are dropping off goods. We will be communicating this to Diamond Harbour Ferry users and the wider community. Reclamation of land LPC has applied for resource consent to extend the reclamation in Te Awaparahi Bay to 34ha. Ten hectares has already been reclaimed as part of the Lyttelton Port Recovery Plan, following the 2010/2011 earthquakes. The port requires the 34ha reclamation to provide the space needed to meet the South Island’s fast growing freight requirements. LPC has always communicated that, while the port does not need all 34ha immediately, it will within the next 10 to 15 years, and is obtaining the consents now to allow the extension of the reclamation without any future disruption. LPC has always said that the logs in front of Norwich Quay will be relocated to either Cashin Quay or the reclaimed area. For locals, the expansion of the reclamation is particularly beneficial. Moving Port operations east, away from Lyttelton’s residential area, will also free up the inner harbour for increased community access. Cruise ship berth and channel deepening consent Obtaining the channel deepening resource consent is a critical component of the international cruise ship berth construction and this was communicated at the consent hearing. While the existing channel has sufficient depth to allow cruise vessels to reach the port, dredging is required around the new wharf to allow the ships to actually dock at the proposed cruise berth. We are preparing to mediate with both parties who appealed our consent on their concerns and consequently, at this point, we are unable to provide a time line of when the cruise berth will be completed. We are as disappointed as many are about this delay, particularly as the hearing panel decided “by a considerable margin” that our consent be granted. LPC actively does its best to ensure that any impact our operations have on the community and environment is minimised.
