Last weekend
I enjoyed an
afternoon at my
home with our campaign team
to say a huge thank you for their
support and hard work.
Members and supporters
are truly the backbone of our
National Party and Port Hills
electorate, and I thank you for
your support and involvement.
We ran a strong Port Hills
campaign and were delighted to
have won the party vote, which
contributed to National’s overall
success.
It was a difficult week for me
and I know the same for many
when the devastating news was
presented that National will not
be returned to Government, in

Rotary’s work to
support elderly
people in the
community
IT’S HARD to imagine going
into the centre of Christchurch
for the first time in 10 years.
But that was the experience
for one of the nine Sumner and
Redcliffs senior citizens which
Ferrymead Rotary took into the
central city. Although they all
live alone and some still drive,
most hadn’t been into the city
for a long time.
They were collected by two
Rotary members in a van lent
to the club by the Kowhai Rest
Home. Their first stop – the
Botanic Gardens. They were
given a guided tour around
the gardens in the ‘Caterpillar’,
complete with a driver
commentary about the plants
and their origins, and stops for
closer inspection at the begonia
and cacti houses. Several hadn’t
been on the ‘Caterpillar’ before
and some had never been to the
Botanic Gardens.
After a Rotary-shouted lunch
in a city cafe, they cruised
around the changing scene
of the central city rebuild.
They took in sights such as the
Margaret Mahy playground, the
Piano Centre, the Isaac Theatre
Royal and the Transitional
Cathedral.
So much had changed since
they had last been to town 10
years ago. As you might expect,
they were astounded by what she
saw. One woman said: “I might
now even be able to find my way
around the city again.”
The group was most appreciative
of the outing. One wrote
to Ferrymead Rotary, saying it
was “especially fun and a real
learning experience to be taken
around the Botanic Gardens

Feedback like this has encouraged
Ferrymead Rotary to make
the outing an annual project.
This was the first time since
the February 22, 2011, earthquakes
that the club has provided
something specific for this
age group. Back then when the
local supermarkets were closed,
the club transported numerous
elderly people to shop further
afield.
