The school has permission from the Ministry of Education to hold its annual fair on the original Main Rd site in a “celebration of community spirit”. Principal Rose McInerney has put the call out to Rose McInerney past pupils, staff and the wider community to support the school in fundraising for the new campus, scheduled to open across the road at Redcliffs Park in 2019. “There are an extraordinary number of people who got in behind us and helped fight to keep our school open and return the school to its community. We’d like to invite everyone involved to come along and say goodbye to our old school site and buildings and celebrate new beginnings – a brand new Redcliffs School over the road in 2019,” Ms McInerney said. Redcliffs School opened in 1907 following the construction of the causeway allowing electric trams through from the city. The first school fair was held at Easter in 1947 and the first spring fair was held in September 1952, when funds were raised to purchase a typewriter for the school’s office. Ms McInerney said it was now Redcliffs School’s main fundraiser and a vital source of income. In preparation for the fair, volunteers have put in hundreds of hours tidying the school grounds and clearing and cleaning the old school site buildings, which have been vacant since 2011. Council closes the book on bid to staff Sumner library over weekends • By Sarla Donovan THE CITY council has been criticised for building a library in Sumner that it can’t afford to staff on weekends. The Linwood-Central- Heathcote Community Board has asked city council staff to investigate whether extended opening hours were possible after residents complained about its limited weekend times. The library is currently only open from 10am- 1pm on Saturday and is closed on Sunday. But city council staff have advised board members that “owing to the current financial climate, libraries are unable to increase the level of service”. Sumner Residents’ Association spokeswoman Kimberley Mossman said the city council should have built a cheaper library and ensured there was money left over to staff it adequately. It was frustrating the city council hadn’t gone for a “smaller, more affordable library and had more money in the kitty to staff it”, Ms Mossman said. Sumner Centre: Matukutuku Takotako cost $10 million to build. As well as the library, it includes meeting rooms, a community hall and a museum. Heathcote Ward city councillor Sara Templeton said the board had asked city council staff to come back with some options, Kimberley but that was not what it Mossman had been given. “A simple ‘no’ is disappointing. I’m sure that with some more creative and out-of-the-box thinking, and community involvement, a solution can be found.” Cr Templeton said she would be raising the issue again at the board’s fortnightly meeting today. Blanche Fryer’s work for this exhibition has been inspired by the anthropomorphic interpretation of the inner life of fish. “We hear of horse whisperers, canine communicators, mammal channelling, but you never hear of a yarn with a fish, excepting if there is a hook on the end. It has been really enjoyable creating these characters and also playing with a few different glazes.” Jane Downes pieces ‘Dwell’, a continuation of her body of work ‘Shelter’. Designed almost completely for function and the upholding of cultural values, offering shelter, protection and observation. Kara Burrowes explains her rationale – “I’m drawn to the layers and history of the urban environment; exposed walls, discarded objects. Often it’s the banal and mundane that sparks an idea, the concept of transforming something quite ordinary into something precious and alluring.” Blanche Fryer’s anthropomorphic interpretation of the inner life of fish. Amy Hoedemakers, “I used sketches from walking down the riverbed and words to begin with or as reference points. I wanted my work to have the feeling of looking into another world, of it stretching on, almost as though you could step into it but having an abstract quality at the same time. Wednesday November 22 2017 News Call for more to be done on Beachville Rd • By Sarla Donovan NOT ENOUGH is being done to tidy up the Beachville Rd esplanade, the Redcliffs Residents Association says. Association secretary Pat McIntosh wrote to city council infrastructure rebuild liaison manager Ross Herrett last month about the unfinished landscaping and “unsightly” overgrown grass next to the new $4.6 milion seawall. After the Bay Harbour News published an article about the issue earlier this month city council contractors mowed the weed-ridden area a few days later. But Dr McIntosh says matters they raised in the letter to the city council still haven’t been addressed, including replacing damaged picnic tables and resowing bare patches of land.
